Avianca's Talks With United Continue in Bid for Latam Dominance

Thu Aug 24, 2017 2:49 pm

Interesting article, including an interview with Avianca's CEO

Of interest is the fact the merger with Avianca Brazil is well underway

LATAM dominance seems a bit of a stretch - all of the Avianca's combined are what, half the size of LATAM Group? Smaller? Not to mention the pending JV between LATAM and AA.

I really hope Avianca and United don't merge. That would create an airline which is too large. Airline groups the size of the US3 are as large as any airline company should be, indeed arguably are, too big.

I think the merger mentioned in the article is between Avianca Holdings and Avianca Brazil. As far as I understand , there has never been any mention of Avianca and United merging

They wouldnt. The article is talking about Avianca Colombia merging with Avianca Brasil.

The merge would be between Avianca Holdings and Avianca Brazil. A United - Avianca merger has never been considered as far as I know

It depends on what part of "Latin" America you look at. Avianca is much stronger in northern South America and Central America (especially if COPA, UA, and AV all play nice) than LATAM, who are stronger in deep South America.

Very little information that is useful in the article. It has been known for months that the Krietes have sued AV, Efromovich and UA because allegedly DL offered an M&A transaction that included cash and that implied a higher valuation of the company. The UA transaction pursued by Efromovich on the other hand involves a loan if I am not mistaken.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Will this get me my EWR/GIG nonstop at long last? As well earn and redeem MP miles as if I flew LH?

Selfish question, apologies in advance!

LA/JJ is larger than AV/O6 in evey competing country market except Colombia, correct? LATAM has cero coverage in Central America except for a new San José-Lima route, but if South America is the market rather than all of Latin America (as say Chile and Argentina are wealthier than Honduras and El Salvador), LA/JJ wins.

Copa has a vey successful connecting hub in PTY, but they don't have the size of LATAM, GOL or the Avianca Group.

Rincón is saying what is being repeated n Colombian media. I think that once the merger with Avianca Brasil is finished they will come out as a much stronger player, and combined with the JV with United, they will be able to effectively compete with LATAM and the ever growing LCCs (remember, Viva just ordered 50 A320s for their Colombia and Peru ops).

Is that really pending? Shocking that competition regulators didn't laugh the application off.

I'm surprised too, although I wonder if a UA/AV/O6 JV would give AA/JJ/LA a higher likelihood. Chile and Brasil, and to a smaller extent Perú, would be blanketed in Oneworld coverage and not much else.

It has been mentioned here a few times that AV might launch ORD from BOG once it gets a sufficient number of A319NEOs.
