FI increases its service in S18 to TXL, SEA and PDX

Wed Sep 06, 2017 1:45 pm

FI has increase its service in S18 both to SEA and PDX as well as its service to TXL. This will be very interesting:
- where will B767 go instead?
- are we seeing that the B737MAX is open up some B757 to increase the frequency to SEA and PDX? Will more destinations be increase?

I think TXL will see daily service by FI very soon.

2018 is the first full year that Alaska loyalists (like myself) can't use delta to Europe.

I make 3-4 trips a year, and I honestly haven't decided what I'm going to do after this year

I've done idelandair and condor (well, will next week) and will have to compare that to switching allegiances to delta and using their flights.

Extra flights help for sure - I just pity the poor people of Iceland as more tourists stop over.

Glad to see Icelandair increase service to the Pacific Northwest. Like BlatantEcho, I am an AS loyalist and now tend to avoid DL, especially given their outrageous pricing on direct flights to AMS. I just hope that FI can improve the reliability issues - KEF has become increasingly congested and there are lots of delays as a result. I also wish that FI would make some improvements to the J product. It doesn't need to be direct aisle fully flat seats, but the current seats aren't great for a 7-8 hour flight.

I don't know if it's possible for you guy's in the US but I usually book my AMS-PDX flights through AF and KLM it's much cheaper than DL.

Tickets tend to be much more expensive when bought in the US. Europe-US-Europe routings are often significantly cheaper than US-Europe-US. I've been able to take advantage a few times when I had two Europe trips booked, but in general there aren't many ways to avoid it. Especially in a market like PDX with limited options, and where DL takes full advantage of that.

At least with Air Berlin cutting all international routes from TXL, KEF can become a transfer hub to North America.

I'm sure some of those flights may become 767 flights...it's a year from now.

It already is.
KEF has more destinations in US and CAN than CPH, ARN and OSL all together (may be DUB as well)!
KEF is already becoming a big transfer hub between US/CAN and EUR.
There will be very exciting times ahead!
- What will WOW do (will open at least 5 new cities in US!)? Will it start service to East Asia? (That will be tough since Iceland has not signed a overfly agreement with Russia).
- What will Icelandair do?
- What airline will be next in line to start year round service to KEF.

It is interesting to see that Wizz Air and Air Baltic are flying to KEF (Air Baltic for quiet some time now). Their pax are coming from their destination, but fly with FI or WW further to the West. Will we see more like that?

FI already flew 6X per week from PDX this summer, so that's not new. Maybe they meant daily in 2018?

According to the S17 schedule there were only 5x weekly filghts S17
FI665 KEF1715 – 1815PDX 75W x57
FI664 PDX1540 – 0615+1KEF 75W x16

No flights KEF-PDX on Fridays and Sundays and no flights PDX-KEF on Mondays and Saturdays.

I wrote down their flight schedule in July for spotting (from their website) and the only days they didn't fly were Sundays from KEF and Mondays to KEF. That may have only lasted a few weeks and happened to be the week I looked at. Maybe their online timetable was wrong? That's where I got the info from.

Good question! After I wrote this I figured it out. Very strange.
I have heard that PDX is doing really good. When will PDX be a year round service and move up to daily?

I looked at the flight logs and the Friday/Saturday rotation was flown from June 2 to Sept 1 so FI has slipped in a 6th weekly flight all summer without officially announcing it.
Maybe they will actually announce when they go daily on KEF-PDX-KEF.

FI does adjust to bookings and I talk about a very short time frame. So you can see the 757-200 being replaced by the 757-300 or a 767-300ER without prior announcement. Or the 767-300ER is replaced by a 757-200 if less seats are booked than expected. FI also doubles up on flights with sending 2 757-200 with 15 minutes time difference where one was planned.
You have the places were the 767 is a fixture AMS, LHR and JFK and other destinations can see a 767 or 757-300 on an add hoc basis..

Thanks! That solves the mystery. Thought maybe I wrote it down wrong?
