OAK temporarily closes Rwy 30 for rehab

Mon Sep 11, 2017 5:57 pm

Bay Area spotters may be interested in knowing that starting today, OAK is temporarily closing Rwy 12-30 for runway rehabilitation. Consequently, Twy W has been converted into a runway, designated as Rwy 11-29 for the duration of the rehab with 7,620 feet available. When operationally feasible, some airline traffic will use the North Field for arrivals, primarily Rwy 10R-28L. Meanwhile, heavy arrivals will use Rwy 11-29. All airline traffic will depart Rwy 11-29 (Twy W).

Airnav.com has a link to the latest airport diagram which shows the closely-spaced parallel runways, Rwy 11-29 and Rwy 12-30.

Here's some information about the project:

Hoping some spotters can get some great photos of this unique operation in the coming weeks.

I'm interested to see how this impacts the new transatlantic flights departing from Oakland. Any indication if parts of the original 12/30 will be used to allow aircraft to taxi on or if aircraft will need to back-taxi down the runway for full-length departures?

I'm a student at a local flight school in OAK. We've been warned about the potential difficulties of doing touch and go's on the 28s during the closure. It will be interesting to see how much airline/biz jet traffic that usually uses 12/30 ends up using 28R.

The intersection departure distance is 5800 ft. Traffic that can make that are taking it; otherwise they're backtracking down 30/12 for "full" length departure.

I hope 12/30 gets the help it needs and emerges from rehab a stronger runway, both mentally and physically.

If you axe the North Field runways, OAK is a smaller mirror of LGW when the runway needs a rehab. Will the European flights have a problem departing nonstop or will they top up at SMF or someplace?

I flew out of OAK on Saturday 9/9. Took off from 28L and had to wait about 15 mins on the ground waiting on 2 arrivals to runway to 28L. They must have shut down 30 at about 8pm local Saturday night.

Interesting that the taxiway can handle the weight of a widebody landing. Is there something unique about this one or is that typical for most taxiways? I'm thinking it's not typical.

So aircraft landing 29 either have to make V... slightly ambitious, or roll to the end and wait off to west side on the former touchdown area of 12. Then when there is a gap in traffic they will backtaxi to V. If there's traffic stacked up at the end there would be pretty good views from the parking lots of buildings on South Loop road adjacent to the runway.
