Final Alaska Air 737-400 Combi Flight Scheduled

Mon Sep 25, 2017 4:38 pm

'The last combi flight is scheduled for Oct. 18, which is also the Alaska Day state holiday. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the formal transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. The final flight will deliver the combi plane to Seattle from Juneau.

Its one very interesting airplane, sad to see them go. Any plans for them? Transfers, storage, scrap? I'd say scrap because they are around 25 years, but I won't be surpised if they were transfered to another airline.

They are certainly flying right up to the last day. Saw one boarding up last night when I deboarded in ANC.

So of the 17 still flying almost half are AS. Not bad, I didn't think that many were still up there.

The figure of 17 I quoted earlier was for Alaska Airlines...that's according to Flight Radar 24: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/airl ... -asa/fleet

I personally didn't interpret the question "how many -400s are still flying?" to mean any beyond the AS fleet since this thread is about Alaska Airlines and the 737-400 Combi.

Not sure if all those are currently on the roster able to be scheduled for flights.

According to the AS website there are ten 734's flying with AS - https://www.alaskaair.com/content/trave ... 7-400.aspx
In addition to those all passenger aircraft they employ an additional five combis - https://www.alaskaair.com/content/trave ... combi.aspx

For a total of 15 in fleet.

No, but it will be once the first -700F goes into service; it just arrived at SEA last week.

They haven't updated the aircraft info on their website for quite a while. There are only two remaining passenger models flying after another two recently left the fleet on the 16th. Four of the five combis are still operating as well as the -400 freighter.

I guess even reliable sites are filled with inaccuracies. You really can't believe what you read on the net. Thanks for the updated info! I guess the random PDX-SEA flight I had last year will be my last 734 with AS.

You mentioned how they haven't updated their site, I saw that they have added back the CR7 which to me, means they'll be around for awhile, although no mention of the CR2's OO is flying for AAG, short term & white or blue tails.

Back to the 734's, I'm going to miss the Make A Wish, Spirit of Alaska Statehood & my favorite, the Magic of Disneyland which I flew on before.

Any fewer Combis is a really bad thing. God I loved them even though I've never even got close to one.

Wow. Only two AS 737-400s flying. I never thought I'd see that day. :)

What routes are the two -400s flying?

Yeah the CR7 info on the site still says "to be retired by the end of 2016" so it couldn't have been updated recently lol. I'm pretty sure the plan is that the CR2s will operate until all the CR7s are back in service.
And they did have another "paint the plane" contest like they did with the Alaska Statehood scheme, and I believe the intent was to put the winning livery on one of the -700 freighters eventually, but I don't know if they're still planning on doing that or not.

They're mainly only operating on routes to/from and within Alaska, but will occasionally do some west coast routes such as SMF

Being a "birder" as well as a long-time Avgeek (40 years) I made a number of trips to Alaska last year. Glad I scheduled some Combi rides. Overall I've got thirteen Combi rides over three of the tail numbers. Most recently (Oct 2016) I spent some AS miles to fly roundtrip from ANC to Barrow via Prudhoe Bay and Fairbanks on N762AS. I explained to the flight attendant what I was doing and she could expect me to be with her all four legs of the trip. We shared some good conversation that trip. Now that the Combi is ending service I wish I'd made an effort to get up there and fly one this year.

This video talks about how the 737-400 Combi is essential for maintaining small communities like Barrow, Alaska. Does anyone know what the plans are for bringing cargo into the community after AS retires the Combi?

794 leaves in a few days, 767 in a few months.

Three 737-700 freighters. The first (N627AS) entered service yesterday.

Bummed to see 794 gone. Rode that majestic steed into FAI back in May for my honeymoon.

Much of the -400 fleet have found new customers. A good handful of the passenger models have been converted or are being converted into freighters, and I believe the combis will be further converted into full freighters as well.
