Mon Sep 25, 2017 7:55 pm

Follow on order

4 x 777-300ER
2 x 747-8F

Qatar orders two 747-8Fs, boosts 777 orderbook

Slightly OT, but what is QR's average LF? They sure have a lot of aircrafts on the books.

It's also interesting that they operate a mix of 777F and 748F. This order eventually gets them to 16 777F and 4 748F. ???

Qatar have been using the A333 recently on some of their widebody routes, so if that fleet is supposed to be parked it would indicate they do need a few more widebodies. Cheap end of line 773ERs would backfill this nicely and allow 787s to be redeployed.

Freight is another story altogether. They must need the capacity.

No, check the linked FG article - " we have already sold capacity of the two 748F's and perhaps could order a third " says AAB.
So basically it's confirming the two frames QR Cargo are already about to receive. Not another two on top of that.

I'm still amazed of how QR is coping through this crisis, and along with all of the lost feed from the routes they were forced to end. They seem to be handling it fine.

QR can’t get enough of the 77W it seems, always placing top up orders and Boeing loves I I bet.

I guess the crisis triggered a lot of requests for air transport. Do you know who quickly the frames will be delivered?

Just to avoid further confusion: today's announcement is a confirmation of a previous unidentified order: 4 77Ws and 2 747-8Fs were placed on July 16. While the 77W is a follow on order, the 747-8F is not.

Over on Twitter we can read:

Jon Ostrower‏Verified account @jonostrower 5h5 hours ago

Qatar’s Akbar Al Baker said the blockade had increased QR Cargo ops by 160% vs. 2016, carrying fresh food, medical supplies & equipment.

So in the short term at least they sound like they can really use the lift, and maybe longer term too.

Boeing closed the gap by lowering production rate to 3.5 aircraft per month.

Can someone clarify if QR has actually confirmed those 787-9s. My understanding is that they were options that were never excersized.

And if they need wide body capacity what on earth happened to those 350s lying in Toulouse. They cancel 4 and then take 4 extra 777. Wonder if this is a message to Airbus.

Boeing closed the gap by lowering production rate to 3.5 aircraft per month.

And I think almost all production slots of the 'old' 777s have been filled by now. Of course, we've heard the same from Airbus 2 years ago with the A330ceo line, and they still kept selling them ;)

When these 4 77W appeared as UFO on Boeings order book, it was already rumored to be QR, ordering replacement for the 4 A359 they cancelled. Which they appear to take up anyway I believe.

The 4 stored 359's at TLS are being readied for delivery to QR now. No longer cancelled. See separate A350 production thread for news and updates on this.

Bloomberg has this piece on the matter...

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... argo-booms

Unintended Boon

"“I’m pleased to tell you today that in fact the blockade has quite the opposite impact on our business to the one intended,” Al Baker said. “Our adversaries thought they would bring us to our knees and we would capitulate, but this didn’t happen.”

He dismissed any suggestion that Qatar Air might delay aircraft orders because of the blockade or slowing travel growth in the Middle East. “We are not studying any deferrals because Qatar Airways’ aircraft orders are not all growth airplanes,” Al Baker said. “They are also fleet replacement.”

The carrier plans to take all 110 of the Boeing 777X planes that it has committed to buy from Boeing through orders or options. And it expanded a previous order for 44 of Boeing’s 777-300ER by four aircraft, a deal previously recorded on Boeing’s backlog without disclosing the buyer. Combined with the two jumbos, the aircraft are worth $2.16 billion at list prices before the customary discounts."

So that they have vendors to support them when the political winds change. This is no different from the military order that Qatar has for Boeing F-15's, Rafale and Eurofighter. Not what most would do but when you are one of the richest countries in the world you can do business this way.

The 748F can be deployed on shuttle DOH-THR or DOH-IST cargo flights. After all, the population need to be fed.

Seems like QR will order additional 777LRF.

During a question and answer session there, Al Baker said Qatar Airways would order seven more 777-200LRFs – an update to the four 777 freighters previously known to be on order.
