AA 777 & 787 fleets coming to CLT and PHL?

Fri Sep 29, 2017 3:29 am

I hear that American Airlines plans to retire their Airbus A330-300 fleet by the end of the decade, around 2019. I also hear that when this happens, AA will bring their 777 and 787 fleets to the LUS hubs, CLT and PHL. Who else knows about this and what will happen?

The presentation today made it seem like it won’t be possible until the maintenance teams are integrated. It’s what’s keeping the 767 from flying transatlantic out of PHL at the moment.

I would expect to see the A330-300s live out their final days flying South American runs out of MIA. The lack of competition means they don’t need the most modern product.

Starting next year (2018), PHL-ZRH, PHL-BUD and PHL-PRG will all use the 767-300.

Eventually the 772s will make their way to CLT, PHL, particularly on routes previously flown by A330-300s. You can bet all CLT/PHL-LHR will be eventually flown by 772s. As the for 788s/789s, yeah no. The 788 appears to be the exclusive longhaul plane out of ORD for obvious reasons and the 789s are headed for LAX/DFW-Pacific plus LAX-GRU.

The A330 - in terms of both size and density - is probably a better transatlantic aircraft for many of the largest European markets out of CLT and PHL. The 787's range is unnecessary for those stage lengths, and for other markets out of CLT and PHL, too. The 777 is likely too large and too premium. That said, I could see CLT/PHL-LHR going to the 777 eventually - it's essentially hub-hub given the JV with BA, and a huge O&D market in its own right, plus with the number of 777s moving through LHR in a day it would be easy to rotate aircraft on and off these routes, and it would simplify the LHR operation (in terms of support equipment, spare parts, etc.) down to solely 777s and 787s.

Looking towards 2019 and the 2020's AA will need some type of plan. The 333's will be out and the 763 limited in number

Ah, yes - forgot about AMS, too. As presently loaded, AA's S18 767 longhaul schedule requires about five aircraft each at MIA (CNF, GYE, MVD) and PHL (AMS, BUD, LIS, PRG, ZRH), plus there is still a smattering of inter-hub 767 flying (MIA-DFW, MIA-JFK, etc.) and also two 767s dedicated to JFK-CDG and JFK-MAD. Although, personally, I still wouldn't be shocked to see both of those JFK routes ultimately switched to 777s. Also, I didn't realize it until now, but AA appears to be going all-777 on DFW-Hawaii for S18.

I think we're already seeing the broad outlines of the plan taking shape:

787 for Asia
777 for premium/high-density Europe/South America
A330 for less-premium Europe (and possibly South America)
767/757 for the thinnest Europe/South America markets

Agreed - in 3 years, does that mean most TATL flying out of CLT & PHL will be A332? I don't think they have large enough of a fleet to support that, especially with recently 757 up-gauges (LIS, AMS)

I agree with others that we'll probably start seeing the 77Es on CLT/PHL-LHR, and maybe to FCO in the summer. For the past few years there has been quite a bit of slack in the 777 fleet as mods have been in progress - just tightening up the utilization a bit (in combination with new 789s freeing up some aircraft) should provide the capacity to retire the 333 fleet.

I was under the impression that the 333 fleet would be going very soon.

Yep.

Case in point - at least as of now, AA in S18 still has 777s loaded on DFW-NRT. If, for instance, those two daily flights were shifted to 789s - thus, incidentally, completing the removal of AA's 777 from the Pacific - that would free up sufficient 777 capacity to completely shift PHL/CLT-LHR to 777s.

We'll probably see a general shuffle - 77Es cover the A333 premium routes, A332s cover the remaining A333 routes, and 763s cover the A332 routes. Some 763 routes are going to be covered by 77Es like what we are seeing with DFW-HNL.

Why is AA getting rid of its 330-300s? Are the planes nearing the end of their cycles?

It seems strange to me to replace the 330s with 777-200s. AA's 330s seat about 292, while its 772s seat 260 - 289, and are significantly heavier than the 330. For transatlantic trips from PHL, it seems the 330s are a better match.

I thought it was because the -300s had PW4000s, which none of the other planes in AA's fleet have. Their -200s had RRs.

AA management has said they want to simplify and consolidate widebodies to help with staffing, maintenance, IROPS, etc. That seems to mean the fewest number of types of widebodies flown out of each hub.

Right now, as far as I can tell, it is (roughly)....
JFK: 767, 777
PHL: 767, 330
CLT: 330
MIA: 767, 777
ORD: 767, 777, 787
DFW: 767, 777, 787
LAX: 777, 787

Looks like the 767 will be leaving DFW and ORD shortly. 777 is also leaving ORD.

With the A330-300s being retired, that only leaves 15 A330-200s. Is that enough for them to be flown out of 2 hubs or can we expect to see them all consolidated in one hub?

Also, with more 787s to be delivered, will they just be used to increase the flying out of current hubs or can we see another hub get a sizable 787 operation?

My guess, just a guess, going forward, we're looking at...
JFK: 777
PHL: 767, 330
CLT: 787
MIA: 767, 777
ORD: 787
DFW: 777, 787
LAX: 777, 787

767 leaves JFK, ORD, DFW due to retirements.
777 leaves ORD. Increased flying in DFW and JFK to cover 767 retirements.
787 new hub CLT due to new deliveries.
330 leaves CLT due to retirements.

We've generally seen AA de-emphasize the 752 on TA routes. PHL-AMS/LIS shifting to 763's. JFK/BOS-CDG 752's gone.

How many 763's will be around in 5 years? Are there enough 763 and 332's to operate the less premium international routes?

And there are only 9 of them, versus 47 77Es. The A333s and 77Es are about the same age (some 77Es are older, some newer, many same age).

Wow. I would not have imagined that the A333s were on their way out. Not sure about the average age of the A333 fleet but I flew US PHL-CDG in Easter 2013 on an A333 and I was impressed by how new and well kept the plane was. I suppose that based on that experience I assumed the A333s would stay much longer.

I would not be surprised if the AA A333s indeed end their careers flying some TATL and South American routes.

I don't expect to see a 787 in CLT or PHL unless AA starts a route to Asia.

Maybe Republic E175, but I'm guessing A319 as well. Nice destinations with a fleet of only 20x!

Yes, that's enough for them to be split out of two hubs. If you look at CLT, there are only about 8 TATL flights per day in peak season (2-3 of which I wouldn't be surprised to see move to the 77E in the near future), and they can rotate back to PHL through various European destinations. If you consolidated the 332s all at PHL that wouldn't provide very much flexibility on the PHL TATL routes - it makes more sense to have some 763s cover the thinner routes, 332s for the "middle" (CDG, BCN, DUB, etc.) and a few 77Es that would rotate in via LHR.

A little off topic, but I recently read in the Wall Street Journal that next summer, AA will have nothing but 787s out of ORD to Europe and Asia. The move is designed to improve on-time performance. If one plane is delayed for weather or maintenance problems, having other aircraft of the same type should keep flights from becoming horribly delayed or cancelled.

Try next year, as in, a few months from now.

The E190s will be retired in 2019.

When the E190's go I wonder why they'll put on the BOS-LGA shuttle. A319's again?

Maybe. DL uses 717s mixed with E170/175s so my guess is you will see a mix of A319s and E175s. Then again, with DCA being a hub for AA I'm surprised not to see more A319s on LGA-DCA already.

It’s been discussed in other threads but yes, this is something that AA has been working on for a while. It helps position spares more effectively to help mitigate the problems you’ve outlined but also helps to provide a more consistent customer experience on long-haul routes out of a given hub.

In relation to this discussion, in light of AA’s desire to segregate if you will certain widebody fleet types at certain hubs, I think we can expect CLT and PHL to gravitate towards a mix of 330 and 767 flying.

If the A333 is being retired in a few months then why does AA still have it in their schedule over the summer? For instance CLT-LHR still shows 2x A333 throughout S18.

Any exact timeline for the A333 retirement?

I'd guess they'll have the A330-300 in their schedules until they know definitively what the retirement timelines are. I expect they are still working on figuring out the retirement timelines based on new aircraft deliveries, the number of aircraft needed for the S18 schedule (which is not finalized by any means), etc.

And PHL-AMS

Looking towards 2019 and the 2020's AA will need some type of plan. The 333's will be out and the 763 limited in number

I think we're already seeing the broad outlines of the plan taking shape:

787 for Asia
777 for premium/high-density Europe/South America
A330 for less-premium Europe (and possibly South America)
767/757 for the thinnest Europe/South America markets

Are any of the CLT-Europe flights premium heavy routes?

CLT-LHR/FRA are very premium heavy with corporate traffic and connections of corporate traffic. lots of paid J on all three (2xLHR, 1xFRA) of those flights. LH's flight to MUC is similar. filling up the back is more of an issue for LH to MUC, I don't really think AA has an issue for FRA considering the mix of local O&D business traffic, military (airports like FAY yield a lot of connects to FRA), connections (from Florida and elsewhere), and profitable cargo. LH only have connections on the MUC end and MUC is less a US military destination than FRA is.

supposedly CLT-CDG/FCO both do well in the forward cabin and AA has been surprised by the paid J demand, especially to FCO. the long "seasons" for these flights seem to indicate this

Not true, Maintenance is already working each other's metal, and has been for a while, just have to go through Gen Fam.

It sounds like soon the only three markets served out of JFK on the 767 will be CDG, MAD and MIA.
