AA 737/321 Cabin Updates

Fri Sep 29, 2017 2:27 pm

I apologize if there is already a thread on the AA fleet - I follow the Delta NB and WB threads, but searched several topics and didn't find a similar thread for AA. Please delete if this is already being discussed.

I thought that this from the last page here (http://c.hub.aa.com/email/arrivals/2017 ... _final.pdf) was interesting - bold emphasis mine:

"Q: What changes will be made with the retro tting on the B737 and A321?
A: American will harmonize our fleet so that when a customer (or non-rev traveler) steps on board, they will know exactly what they’re getting — a new interior, power at every seat, free wireless entertainment and live TV and access to faster- than-ever satellite Wi-Fi. We’re also installing larger overhead bins. This new layout will mean adding 12 seats for a total of 172 on every B737-800 we y now, so they match the new 737 MAX that was delivered for the rst time today. On our A321s (other than the A321T), we’ll take them from 181 or 187 seats today to 190. This project begins later this year and runs through 2021."

I wonder how the Live TV will be delivered? Are they installing seat back TV's? Or will they deliver this to mobile devices via apps?

This means that they have reversed their plan and will indeed be installing TVs on those who do not have it! No other way to see Live TV.

But that contradicts the quote of the spokesman.

No it doesn't. The spokesman never states that you will be getting free entertainment and live TV through seatback monitors.

"Free wireless entertainment and Live TV". It sounds similar to what Southwest offers.

It will be on mobile app for all the new planes. Aa continues to downgrade its product, not a surprise.

According to internal memos. All IFE will be taken out from the 321 and 737. They will offer free streaming

In terms of the IFE, I'm actually happy with the change. As it is, I'm not willing to pay extra for AVOD PTVs, anyway, and would happily accept high-speed wifi, messaging and streaming IFE to my own device - especially since these planes will all be getting USB and power, too. Frankly, I think I'd actually prefer this system because it means no more boxes under the seats and therefore more foot space.

Regarding density, there's no question these planes will be tight. I'll reserve final judgement until I've actually sat in one. But I'll be interested to see the public, and competitive, reaction to this. With respect to the A321, specifically - I'm interested to see how AA's 190-seat configuration will compare to how Delta has laid out its A321s (with 192 seats).

I just flew on N200UU, a 75H. Its legroom felt like 30" pitch in Economy - very tight indeed. N923US, an A321, was much more comfortable. Not happy to see them reducing legroom further in those and will probably go for Main Cabin Extra if I can in the future.

Good, you are doing precisely what AA wants you to do. Voting with your wallet and spending a bit more for MCE if you find regular economy unacceptable when it comes to space.

I reached out to a contact here at AA and they were able to confirm that the 737-800s are going to be receiving a retrofit Boeing Sky Interior upgrade starting this fall. This will include converting the galleys and lavs to the new Atlas galleys and space saving lavs that are on the MAX. In addition the A321’s are getting refurbished to the same specs as the new A321NEO’s starting with LUS aircraft and followed by LAA. They said that there “will be no distinguishable differences” between the MAX/NEO and the older frames in the fleet.

Also an interesting note, seeing photos of the cabin of the MAX, they are finally going to the plexiglass half dividers between F and Y instead of a full wall. Finally more legroom and space for your carry-on.

There's a lot of mixing Live TV and live TV in this thread. Live TV is Thales' (formerly JetBlue's) DirecTV product delivered through seat back displays while live TV is just that – TV that is live. TV that is live can be delivered through a seat back display, through your phone, through your laptop, through some implant in your brain I guess.

The quoted text in the OP uses a little L so doesn't signal one way or another how it's physically delivered.

Or he could do what most of us have done and choose to fly WN for hundreds of dollars less for the same coach product and better pitch.

Exactly how is that a downgrade? As more and more people watch what they want on their devices, it seems only natural AA caters to that trend, as well as continue to provide their own library on Wifi.

So will AA be removing the PTVs from the current LAA A321s and 738s that have them already installed? If so, I find that annoying as eff. It is logistically so much easier to watch a PTV that's already installed, easier on your neck too. On every other airline I mean, since AA was too damn cheap to install tilting PTVs! WTF was AA thinking? Actually, if AA was going to do such a shit job of installing PTVs, would rather have my own device that I can tilt to a comfortable angle. Good workout for my arms too.

Im 6'2 280lbs, i actually found the 128 seat A319s ok in a middle seat, i believe that both the 172 seat 737s and 190 seat A321s wont br worse than that, so its not that bad. Ill take streaming over seatback any day as well.

Less pitch using slim line seats means uncomfortable seats. Not going to like mce seats with no padding.

And I hate having to watch movies on my little iPhone screen. Terrible for the eyes.
