The Design Air is not impressed.

"Firstly, the tail fin shouldn’t have extended to the bottom of the fuselage. Secondly, the grey underbelly should have been kept, along with grey nacelles. Thirdly, a small touch of yellow, perhaps the circle, in a key line yellow would have kept true to its heritage"

People tend tot stick to the old and recognizable, but sometimes change is the keyword. The yellow in the old livery is recognizable but also outdated. Heck, I have a photo of my late grandfather from the early seventies with a Lufthansa B707 - including the "Spiegelei" at the tail in the background. It's time to move on.

I agree. The new livery is very elegant and contemporary, I especially like that wings and engines are completely white which no one else does. The aircraft washing department will have to hire more people. However, I miss the "colourful tie" to the elegant business dress, which accentuates a personality, but I see why LH did it the way they did it.

I'm not seeing the blue at all, daylight or not. Just black. Perhaps with a brighter, metallic shade this would look better, ala VS, just with blue.

I've tried to modify it a bit, and I think the new livery has much more potential and room for improvement! I believe you can click on the picture to enlarge.

There's room for improvement, sure, but the end result isn't really that bad. The most important component of the livery, the Kranich, is still recognizable, and really does stand out on the tail. The positioning thereof is also much more aesthetically pleasing than the 'Spiegelei', which always looked too high up - especially on the A380 and A320. In terms of extending color down from the tail, it can either look cheap/low cost (like Joon) or professional, as it does here in Lufthansa's case.

I'm looking forward to some side-by-side pictures of the new and old to compare. Perhaps Lufthansa will even line up D-ABYA, D-ABYT and, say, D-ABYL so that we can compare three different liveries together. Of course, D-ABYT will still be the best-looking aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet ;)

I have to say I disagree about the grey belly. IMHO, it's one of the things that causes inconsistencies in the current livery. The new livery will at least look 100% consistent across the whole fleet.

It's not that it's a bad colour scheme (could have been much worse) I don't mind the almost black navy blue colour. What annoys me is how unnecessary it is. They had an iconic livery which looked just as modern as it did 30 years ago when it was introduced.

Problem is there are only 2 colors, which makes it look unbalanced, very lifeless and bland.

Air France livery is even more white, but it works because there is just a bit of red which pops. 3 colors.

Air Canada is also 3 colors. Qantas (also 3 colors) also has a bit of grey near the tail which balances the color scheme.

Even JAL has a third color.

Lufthansa should have kept the yellow or gray somewhere, this is very sterile. Almost looks incomplete or work in progress.

I agree that I am disappointed - and I'm usually not with new liveries, even Eurowhite ones. I liked AC, WN, AA and IB when many did not - but this is just so boring, and I really think its because of the use of one color. That being said - LH's original livery was pretty boring too. It was stereotypical Eurowhite and had been long before this trend even started, so I am not surprised by this change. IMO, their original livery was fine, but nothing extraordinary. Neither is this one.

LH had two signature colors. The yellow and the blue. Especially the yellow was/is unique and on every airport you immediately recognize the LH desks/LH areas.
For me it is totally incomprehensible how a company can get rid of one of its signature colors. The new livery is really elegant but it is also totally boring.
I can understand that after 30 years LH wanted to intodruce a new fresh livery(although it wasn`t necessary) but if they do then it should be not that boring as it now is.

I believe that the yellow will remain, unchanged in shade, in airports and on tickets. It is their very own shade thereof, after all.

Their website does not reflect the new colours/livery yet. That’s an odd move - one would have thought LH would refresh the website as they announced and rolled out the new livery.

So basically what they are saying is that the new livery should look like this:

I have a feeling this new livery will grow on people. I always did have a soft spot for UTA's colours (though I don't know if that was more about the solid blue tail, the green doors, or the Big Boss titles on the 747-300).

UTA's predates Qantas's by a good decade - the earliest photo of it here in the database is from 1973, whereas Qantas's scheme with the same pattern wasn't introduced until 1984.

I think a small tweak of changing the white to chrome for the crane tail logo, and perhaps a chrome border around the Lufthansa lettering would make it pop. But, dropping the iconic yellow? It's should be SOMEWHERE on the exterior.

A thin cheatline running down the angle between the dark blue and white in the colours of the German flag would have looked good, with the crane symbol circled in yellow. As it is now, very bland especially on a grey day.

I get that Lufthansa helped to define Euro-white with a great design years and years ago but now they're just copying the same boring and drab path that everyone else has. You can be imaginative and still look incredibly classy/professional. This new design is pitiful.

Seems like someone scored an A+ in the course "How to destroy an iconic and recognizable livery."
I already disliked the idea of LH changing something but dropping the yellow was beyond my imagination. The new livery looks like the paint job is unfinished and LH planes will be much less recognizable in the future, which is a shame.

The UTA scheme is an early example of Eurowhite and one of the best. Air France - eliminating all fuselage adornment save the titles - looked new and different. Even the Qantas 1984 change was fresh when it appeared. While we're on the subject, let's salute the original Air West scheme from 1968. It predates all of these by a good margin and was a real design departure (no cheatline, four color pairs) when it was introduced. Since it was a small regional carrier, it never got the design recognition it deserved.

Back to the new LH design. It breaks no new ground and merely recycles design concepts that have existed for over 30 years. Neither offensive nor noteworthy. Incorporating a large Kranich as an accent on the fueslage or tail, as some have proposed in this thread, would have been a nice touch and added some warmth to it.

I do want to see an A340 in it, before they all disappear.

Would have been nicer if they had left the bottom rear white and ran that dark blue below the windows to the front. Otherwise its a styled blue tail with all white fuselage that is boing at the front.

Best Livery change the last few years is Hawaiian. with the light gray imagery along the fuselage it kills off the boring white fuselage look with some style.

Gag! Black and white doesn't say Germany. Black and white are probably the two lowest weight colors for paint and this is nothing more than a way to drop a couple hundred pounds. Is there any major brand in the world which only uses black and white? (Mercedes is close) but considering no other design firm has gone down this road just screams fail.
