Important to note this is all A320 service.

Can't wait for DL response though its tight in A at BOS right now.

The MSP-BOS corridor is getting pretty busy. It'll be interesting to see how DL, NK, and SY react. The prices B6 offer look pretty good.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

Excellent news! We've been waiting for B6 for years, and with SY evidently turning into a ULCC this seems like a good time to add one of the "premium" LCCs to the route. This is technically hub-to-hub for DL, and DL will presumably have a fit but I'm not sure where or how. Maybe they'll retaliate on a B6 hub-to-hub route and dump an A330 on JFK-FLL or something like that.

I tend to think that this will go the way of BOS-DTW. Good for B6; fills a remaining hole in the network. Will be interesting to see what (if anything) DL does.

Finally! Anyone know which gates at MSP? Terminal 2? 3x daily with a RON.

Can't wait to see if B6 adds other service once BOS service has started.

It is loaded in the B6 website.
BOS - MSP
6:30 AM - 8:48 AM
1:02 PM - 3:21 PM
7:29 PM - 9:50 PM

MSP to BOS
6:00 AM - 9:50 AM
9:30 AM - 1:21 PM
4:01 PM - 7:58 PM

B6 has timed this well for business passengers from both sides. Now, B6 only has CVG left. Wait for DL come back.

What do you mean by that? DL and B6 drove Spirit off from DTW-BOS but DL and B6 are still slugging it out on r/t fares as low as $127. DTW-BOS wasn't cheap going back a decade (pre-merger NW) with fares typically $350+.

I think we can't forget about SY on the MSP-BOS route. It will be interesting to see how they hold up in this one as a ULCC. Currently running about 3x daily as well during the summer.

Sun Country books the MSP-centric crowd.
jetBlue books the Boston-centric crowd.
Delta grabs from both.

Good assessment, but SY might lose some of their current clientele when they shift to ULCC model. They will pick up others (Spirit), however.

Never say never. Seasonal Florida like WN flies from MSP? How about the west coast? Plenty of possibilities at some point.

I'm not sure I see SY surviving regardless of what happens. B6 entering the market certainly doesn't help though. Many current SY customers are going to be alienated by the changes, and will flock to alternatives. B6 would be well-positioned to take on those customers on key routes.

Interesting development. People have rumored B6 to MSP for 10+ years. I think B6 enters with reluctance, but if they want to be a real competitor, places like MSP aren't optional... it's that kind of add IMO...

This is a slow and cautious process to fill in the huge gap in B6's route network that is the Midwest. There's a giant hole there that they could easily fill in with the right routes.

Wouldn't know. Really DL needs to lose gates at T1 to make room for others, but that's probably a fantasy at this point. But T2 is also quite full even with last year's extra gates. Don't know if there's room there either. As a consumer I hope for Lindbergh. So much more to offer inside.

About time! With B6 entering MSP, and also adding ATL-JFK/FLL/MCO early next year, I can only imagine what DL's response will be.

As others have said, MSP is a gaping hole in the B6 network from BOS and this really helps round out the route map. MSP and BOS are also quite similar in their demographic (liberal, wealthy, educated) and Minneapolis fits the B6 "mold" more than some of the other markets B6 has yet to enter.

tlecam wrote:

Agreed, and similar to BOS-DTW, I can see quite a bit of connecting traffic to the ME3 as well. My understanding is that the Minneapolis area has quite a significant Muslim population with deep ties to the Middle East, similar to Detroit.

MSP-FLL can come further down the line - just like DTW-FLL.

I agree, although that would mostly miss the evening bank to Europe and the Middle East.

Yep, and the question is where NK fits in. Is there room for 4 carriers on this route?

I also think B6 could pick up some travelers on the MSP end, keeping in mind that both Boston and Minneapolis are finance hubs (particularly in the mutual fund space), and B6 could very well have some corporate contracts with such companies. The timing of the morning departure from MSP suggests that B6 may be aiming to capture some of this crowd.

JFK maybe, FLL and MCO no. There’s 5 dedicated carriers on MSP-MCO, DL will fly 6x daily this winter (5x 75Y and 1x 333), SY will fly 3x daily (738), NK 1x daily (32S), F9 1x daily (321) and a Saturday WN flight (73W) so there’s absolutely no more room for O&D between MCO-MSP. MSP-FLL, is more probable than MCO, which is dead last until B6 does it from DTW or ORD, two significantly larger MCO markets.

I figured that was their rationale however is there more to be gained from serving an O&D-focused role or trying to connect the non-SkyTeam-aligned scraps in a Delta fortress hub city?

Twin Cities Business Journal reported that JetBlue will fly from T2 which is fine by me. Yes its smaller but its convenient and security is usually a breeze.

I think JFK msp is going to happen soon considering sy has been doing twice daily out of JFK. There is no reason JetBlue can't pick up the crowd that sy was going after prior to their transition to ulcc in addition to the usual JetBlue loyalists in NYC.
Fll is possible, but might be a little further down the road. I don't think Mco will happen anytime soon.

As for delta retaliation, they can keep adding to Boston, but I think we all expect that to continue regardless of whether or not b6 entered msp.

Next step is either cvg or Cmh I would think. JetBlue did say they are opening 4 new cities in 2018, so they have 3 more to announce.

It's nice to finally have B6 available here at MSP. It will be interesting to see what other destinations will be flown out of MSP and how soon after this new MSP-BOS route, that will occur. I've read about SY's planned changes to the airline and I'm reserving judgement until giving it at least one try. Like many others who fly SY out of MSP for a winter getaway to the Caribbean, I'll be curious to see how this affects their traffic loads. If the changes prove to be lousy, then I'll just be heading to the Caribbean, via B6 and BOS. I've flown enough of DL that I'm happy to skip a stop in ATL and also their uninspired service.

I'm sure that if the 3x perform well, a 4th frequency can be added. B6 also has the flexibility to downgauge the A320's to E190's based on demand. Kind of surprised they didn't start the route off with all E190's, but I know they only have 60 to go around.

Interestingly, B6 entered ATL with all A320's too. Perhaps it's because they know that DL will flood the market, and they need the lower CASM A320 to effectively compete.

NK flies just one flight in the summer season. They could certainly lose out.

1x seasonal is not going to be competitive against DL's 6x, B6's 3x, and SY's 1-2x year-round service. Then again, NK has a much different business model -- one which does not rely on passenger loyalty.

First time I'm hearing of B6 opening 4 new cities in 2018. Very interesting indeed. When/where was this announced?

Agreed that MCO probably won't happen any time soon. If anything I'd put FLL in front of JFK, as B6 continues to build out its FLL focus city.

Hmm, MCI, STL, CVG?

One of the problems at CVG has been gate space. Now that one of the current airlines is moving over to B, a few A gates should open up. B6 would only really need one.

I wonder once SY implements the new ULCC model if they will reduce flying at MSP. That would certainly open up some additional gate space at T2 for someone else (WN, B6, ??)

CVG has gate space issues after all of those cuts DL made? I'm actually surprised to hear that.

Perfect time to add a later flight (E90?)

Yep, and the question is where NK fits in. Is there room for 4 carriers on this route?

There was an interview with Marty st George on airport business earlier this year where he said 4 cities but I don't think it was definitive. I would imagine this will be the most significant station they open next year though.

Now that I had a chance to check, I think you are right about fll vs JFK. Only once daily from nk and 5 weekly from delta on fll msp in addition to another 5 daily on Mia msp from aa and dl. Seems like there is room for daily flight for b6.

I'm excited to see B6 coming to MSP. Unlike some, I prefer the Humphrey terminal, because I can be in my car within five or six minutes after deplaning, vs 15-20 minutes if my flight uses one of the more distant gates at the Lindbergh.

I think MSP-JFK is a no brainer, but I'd be surprised if they add MSP-FLL. People in Minnesota strongly favor the Gulf coast of Florida (as well as Arizona and Palm Springs), not the Atlantic coast, because the Atlantic coast is a longer drive. Even DL, with its huge hub at MSP, has relatively little service MSP-FLL, especially compared to MSP-RSW or MSP-TPA. If DL could make money flying MSP-FLL more often, they would do so, and their minimal schedule is an indication that there isn't enough demand - it's not an indication of an opprtunity for B6.

STL, IND, CMH in that order if we are going by PDEW to BOS...

Either JFK or FLL would be the most likely. But I think B6 will see how BOS works before adding any more.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

It would be interesting to see CMH, especially since they are yet another station that B6 would actually be "returning" to as opposed to starting new service. BNA and ATL are also such stations.
