Iraqi Airways B747 flying today

Fri Oct 20, 2017 2:15 pm

I spotted Iraqi B747 YI-ASA on Flightradar today heading towards Europe. Departed from Baghdad, passed Turkey, circled a few times and then returned to Baghdad. Does anyone know what the reason for the flight was? Test flight? Were they attempting to cross a territory but were denied? I'm guessing they're still on the EU blacklist apart from leased aircraft...

Thanks.

flight was filed from Baghdad to Hahn (Germany) but that YI-ASA circled over the Black Sea and eventually returned to Baghdad. Possible legal issues, after IAW is on the EU Black List preventing any entry.

Why did they even filed when they knew they are on the blacklist, they flew for 4:47 for nothing.

Here is the last banned list. Yup. The 777 is also banned.

Why are the A320s not listed there as an exemption?

Nope, they're YI- registered.

This is because the A320s are owned by IAW, leased to another company and then sub-leased BACK to Iraqi Airways. Some seriously convoluted stuff. So its an Iraqi aircraft operated in Iraqi livery but the operation is undertaken by the third party. I believe AtlasGlobal is that third party.

Or maintenance or operations.

Basically Iraqi Air bought the aircraft, has it painted in their colors and pays someone else to do everything else.
