The shipping is still around as a German/Saudi/Qatari/Chilean conglomerate.
The airline is still around as part of X3.

Following the acquisition of the Hapag-Lloyd group by TUI, initially TUI continued to use the Hapag-Lloyd Flug name (and for a while that of Hapag-Lloyd Express) while it sought to acquire its own licence in Germany. As part of a restructuring of TUI Group, the airlines were merged and rebranded as TUIfly Deutschland in 2007, if I'm not mistaken.
The aim of the restructuring is to leverage the benefits of size, whereby instead of separate airlines in each country, the one airline can consolidate airliner purchases, sales and marketing but retaining local differentiation where the benefits of differentiation outweigh the gains of a common brand and structure.
TUI appear to (have) believe(d) a separate Hapag-Lloyd brand would not bring major benefits, while increasing operating costs.

Lucky enough the shipping lines were merged already when leisure flying took off. That saved us from having a HAPAG and a LLOYD threat

No, they were a mid-sized holiday charter airline with a focus on Mediterranean and Canary Island routes. In the 1990s, they also had some routes to the Caribbean resorts which they flew with A310s. Later, the A310s were used on their medium-haul network until phased out somewhere around 2006. The rest of the fleet were around 20-25 737-400/500, later -800. Indeed, they received the first -800 ever built! However, before they (re-)absorbed Hapag Lloyd Express, their fleet was never larger than 35 aircraft. If I would need to pick an European flag carrier with a similar size as they had in the 1990s, it would most probably be LOT.

I recall they flew to MIA in the 90’s. Remember seeing their bright A310s at this locstion.

My first flight was with a HL A300 as a kid. I remember how huge it felt inside. Fond memories.

I remember that in the 80s they used to have Boeings 727s. I remember that JAT Yugoslav Airlines leased some of them one summer. Being an enthusiast already as a kid, I was very happy that one or two of my flights were operated by these aircrafts.The livery was Hapag Lloyds whithout adding JAT titles if I recall correctly, and the interior was quite different: different seat colour of cours, and if I am not wrong, there was a galley somewhere in the middle of the plane, while on JAT’s 727s the galley was in the rear

Even more important, Hapag-Lloyd was the airline that pushed Boeing to put winglets on the 737NG. Consequently they were the first to operate a 737 with factory installed winglets.

One founding arm of Hapag NDL ( their air transport arm some others together with Junkers Fluggesellschaft AG) was parent to Lufthansa.

I recommended the Hapag Lloyd Wikipedia page purely because it details the long history of Hapag Lloyd and the OP would probably gain far more information from looking there as it would give him a better insight into the company. From the posts I've read it's not as if any great information has been supplied and rather than go into great detail of what I consider a former great German airline I still recommend visiting Wikipedia.
