Air Canada receives first 737 MAX

Wed Nov 01, 2017 8:57 am

A new chapter begins as a new masked airplane has arrived in town.

It's so strange to see a 737 with AC's livery.

Would have looked great in the old 'toothpaste' livery!

This livery just does not work on the 737. It will never be favorite livery to me but I think it looks OK on the Dreamliners and the A330/A320s but this one..... nah..

Apparently it was ferried last night BFI-YLW as AC7169, and is still there.

Does anyone know if Kelowna FlightCraft has a contract with AC? They had one of their new livery A321s sitting there all last week.

There is something odd about the 737 cockpit widow frames in bare metal, with the black mask around them. I think the mask works better on other types - although I think the livery overall would be better without it and with the Maple Leaf roundel above the window line. But then it would be pretty boring, I suppose!

This has been a question of mine for a bit now I’ve seen 2 321s come and go.

I get that they want the maple leaf on the tail to be larger, but smaller and higher up would look better IMO.

Very cool to see AC fly a 737 again. But the new livery does not work well on the 737. The mask looks terrible with the bare metal window frames, and the low logo on the tail looks particularly off on a 737 tail. Would have loved to see this in the toothpaste colors.

Changed from J16/Y169 to J16/Y174. Added row 41 (plus 6 seats), remove window seats on row 29 (minus 2 seats), add seat 28C (plus 1 seat) move row 16EF to 16DE. Not sure if it has new seats though.

How I wish we were discussing AC’s first A320neo...

Seriously though, this livery looks great on planes like the A321 and CRJ for example, but it just doesn’t work on the fusion of 1960s, 1990s, and 2010s lines and shapes of the 737 MAX.

I’ll stick to giving to the Airbus fleet for as long as I can and then give it to the CS300 fleet.

To the last couple of replies above me, it's funny how I said something to the tune of "Why is it such a big deal that Delta is operating A350's now" and I got my head torn off with people saying things like "This is an airline appreciation site" and other things that basically amounted to "stop not being excited about a new aircraft going into a fleet".

So what you guys are doing above is actually WORSE. Who cares if you are mad at Boeing. Air Canada seems to be ok with it, and our opinions wont change that.

Well whether you like the 737 (or A350) or not, it is a big deal when an airline adds a new type of plane. For me this one is a big deal in a bit of a negative way as I love the A320, especially the Air Canada A320. I’m not saying Air Canada shouldn’t be excited and I don’t see anyone else saying that either, after all they get to open new routes and utilize the greater efficency of newer engines, I just think it’s sad to see the beginning of the end for one of my favorite planes in fleet I have flown on and will fly on again. To add to that, yes I personally don’t like the 737 very much, but I’m not saying “who cares” or anything to that effect. I’m acknowledging the occasion, but saying I wish it was “X” aircraft instead of “Y” aircraft we are discussing. I didn’t really like this 737 thing before, but yes, since the CSeries thing, it bothers me even more. I also think it is a step backwards in comfort for all onboard.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly didn’t join this website to influence corporate decisions. If you had a problem with certain others, don’t bring those problems to the rest of us, take it up with them.

But then again, people thought of "toothpaste" and not "luxury Canadian airline" when they saw it, so that poses a problem. Personally I love the new AC "Delta" livery (because let's be honest, it's a ripoff of DL's). It's clean, sharp, and classy.

On the other hand, I usually love the raccoon eyes around the cockpit glass, but it just doesn't work here. It looks great on the A350 and terrible on the MAX.

Agree with many here, the MAX looks awful in the new livery, the metal frames on the cockpit windows totally destroy the effect the mask is supposed to have. That plus the fact many of us here are angry with Boeing likely creates somewhat of a negative bias to begin with.

For the love of God, where to begin!!

...but on the new livery front..I think the new AC branding being conceived before the MAX arrive meant it was designed to optimize the look of the existing fleet and it does look great on the A321 787's and A330's. Looks like the MAX may not have been part of the overall concept.

Another vote for the toothpaste. I only thought of that as the moniker given to it, to me it instantly said "Canada" upon seeing it and I never actually though of dentifrice.
This, while not ugly, is too staid for me and nothing unique (not that uniqueness is a requirement for a livery, I know).

Livery looks great on the 787, but not with the 737, maybe if they paint the Cockpit window frames in black too as the 787.

1) Contrary to most people here, I loved the new Air Canada livery and I think this 737 looks amazing and classy.

2) I probably missed something... why is people angry at Boeing?
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

Since when is running to the government with complaints business?

But back to the topic on hand; I believe the current AC livery looks OK on the 737. Perhaps the lower part of the winglet could be black too - but then it would be less visible to the ground workers.
But count me in with those who will avoid this aircraft as long as I can.

As an American, your perspective in this is that it is fine because it might seem to be helping your county’s industry, to many of us Canadians and others from around the world, we have a differing perspective which makes us mad. You also are quite evidently biased towards Boeing to some extent as I have seen in previous replies to other threads, that also changes your perspective of what is rational or not, but I can tell you it is rational to be mad at a corporation/manufacturer/engineering firm (or lack thereof) when they play the politics card, it’s just bad for everyone.
FriscoHeavy wrote:

Pardon my coming across as being rude, but you need to get over yourself here, not the rest of us. What entitles you to an opinion, but not the rest of us? I personal think this livery looks better on every other plane painted in it so far including the A321, that’s my opinion. Your opinion is yours, it shouldn’t be ours too.

ikolkyo wrote:

That’s an easy cop-out anyone would use to get out of the argument and whether true or not, that doesn’t make it ok, does it? Business was business when AA cheated out TWA employees back in the day. Business is business with the conditions FR gives their staff. None of this is ok, but it’s business being business, does that mean parties and people involved and people watching from the sidelines can’t be mad about it? What your statement really should say instead of “business is business” is business is childish especially when it plays the politics game instead of the competition game.

Are you for real???????

Really going after people because they have an opinion that a paint job looks good on one plane and not the other. Come on!

You don't like that we don't think a bunch of black paint and red stickers don't look good on the 737, well that's unfortunate but we have a right to our opinions much like you do.

Also, Canadians are mad at Boeing because of what's unfolded, we're nationalistic. I'm surprised you as a MAGA type doesn't get that...

Appreciate the support fellow Canadians, Boeing's been tough on a valued Canadian company and a big employer, we have a right to be less than in-love with Boeing at the moment.

Since when is running to the government asking for more money a proper business strategy ?

Count me in as the 99.8% of people that don't care what aircraft I am on as long as it's my cheapest or quickest option.

And there’s nothing wrong with the attitude you have, it’s the nationalist America first people who don’t have a clue that the C Series doesn’t compete with their product.

I’d say 99.8% is a bit high for the amount of pragmatism though.

Not a fan of the raccoon mask that's popular on airliners now.

Agree that this is a step back for AC. The narrower cabin width of the 737 won't really matter much in Business Class - but in Coach, that's an inch less from an already narrow seat. Add to that the mediocre (albeit consistent) service and high fares of AC and, well, it's not a good combo.

And yes, the livery isn't awful, but it's totally un-inspirational.

And finally, whether completely justified or not, I can completely see how Canadians would be p*ssed off with Boeing right now.

This I agree with. I’d like to see it without the mask myself.

I knew Boeing was going "forward & up" to fit the new LEAP engine on the short geared 737, but seeing that picture really affirms just how much. The whole dang engine is in front of the wing. It just doesn't seem proportionally correct.

Can we please leave the Boeing vs CS stuff out of here... there are enough threads running on that and it frankly has 0 to do with the AC/Boeing relationship... my views were well established so check before anyone cares to comment on it.

The MAX doesn't look half as bad as i expected in the new colors. The new colors are warming to me. My only big complaint is that it does look seriously like Delta until you are fairly close up. The MAX wears them as well as the A321 for sure IMHO.

If any of you think the whole Boing deal is peanuts, why are Boeing running ads like crazy in Canada? All over the radio, and prime time TV. “What Canada mean to Boeing.”
http://strategyonline.ca/2017/10/17/boe ... on-canada/

Likely covered elsewhere. But I heard the radio commercial 3 times in an hour. TV commercial twice.
Stand-by for new ATIS message......

I thought I heard a Boeing commercial on 680 News today. I caught it right when it was ending but it said something like "Canada is a big deal for Boeing" or something like that.
I thought I misheard it and was for some other company but now you've confirmed it was a Boeing ad indeed.

Sorry, but as someone who spends a lot of time in B737s, and A320's to a lesser degree, the average traveller doesn't notice any difference in comfort - and this coming from an Airbus fanboy. Your comment about AC's high fares is total rubbish - airfares between WS and AC are with in a dollar of each other, sometimes when the cheap tickets are sold out, AC might be a bit higher and sometimes WS will be higher - case in point, my next flight coming up - AC cost me $189 vs WS's $275 and they leave/arrive within 15 minutes of each other. As far as your comment in regards to AC's "mediocre" service is rubbish - fly YLW-YVR with WS and then AC - both Q400s, 78 seats and 2 FA's - AC is full beverage service while WS is a cup of water. Same with YYC-YEG. When AC uses the Dash 8-300 (50 seats and one FA) you still get full beverage service. AC serves real coffee onboard their Dash 8s while WS serves instant crap on theirs.

As for the livery debate, it might not look the greatest on the 737 but it sure looks better than that bland and drab scheme on Canada's other 737 fleet.

Does anyone know if Kelowna FlightCraft has a contract with AC? They had one of their new livery A321s sitting there all last week.

It didn't stay there for long as it's been ferried to YYZ this past night: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/c-ftjv
