What point-to-point major U.S. airline routes can you think of?

Sat Nov 04, 2017 1:34 pm

These routes must be a route that does not have either a hub or focus city at either end.

Four I can think of are:

ISP-PBI - Southwest
BDL-PBI (Seasonal) - Southwest
PVD-MSY (Seasonal) - Frontier
JMS (Jamestown, ND) - DVL (Devils Lake, ND) - United Express

The last route always confuses me. Why would they have a route between 2 small cities most of us have likely never heard of in North Dakota?? Look it up if you don't believe me. And it's 1x daily, I'd be surprised if they got more than 10 passengers on each flight.

From what I can see, it appears that United Express operates flights DEN-JMS-DVL-DEN or DEN-DVL-JMS-DEN, combining two small cities with one flight. However, I think there are at least two roundtrips a day from DEN to each airport, one with JMS first and one with DVL first. The point is to carry passengers from each city to DEN, not to connect JMS with DVL. I think combining small cities like this is quite common with EAS.

If we consider ABQ a standard WN station ABQ has quite a few point to point flights. If we consider it a small focus city (it sort of used to be due to the Wright Ammendment) then it has nearly no point to point.

It's a milk run route where both cities are connected to/from DEN with one flight/one plane.

Alaska Airlines has lots of these routes in Alaska like ANC-OME-OTZ, ANC-JNU-PSG-WRG-KET-SEA, ANC-CDV-YAK-JNU-SEA, ANC-SCC-BRW-ANC, etc.

WN shouldn't be included in this category because the whole premise of their airline is to serve p2p routes. If we were to include every "p2p" route that WN flew the list would be out of the door... Also, there is a bit of a grey area in which stations are WN focus cities.

However, there are so many with just DL alone
CUN-BWI/CMH/BDL/IND/MCI/MKE/BNA/MSY/MCO/PIT/TPA/IAD
MCO-MIA/GRU/RDU/CUN/BHM/IND/CLE/CMH/GRR/BDL/MCI/SDF/MEM/MKE/BNA/PIT/STL/DCA

LAS-SAN/SNA/SJC/HNL
IND-RSW/MIA/MCO/CUN
CMH-RSW/MIA/MCO/CUN

They are getting ready to do ORD-UIN-CGI also on United express. CGI also will have one nonstop each day to ORD besides having to stopover in Quincy on one.

Southwest is going to have a ton. It also depends on what you consider is a hub/focus city since they don't admit to any.
Orlando isn't one for DL and they have a fair amount.
I think UA still runs MKE-CLE
CUN has a handful on different airlines.
If you count Frontier as major they have a whole lot also.

You almost have to limit this to legacies or the list will be really long.

Lots of Alaska-Hawaii flights (Bellingham-Hawaii,Sacramento-Maui, and Oakland-Hawaii.)
There are other Alaska routes like SMF-SJD.

Currently, and historically, routes to Anchorage like former Continental from Seattle and currently Jet Blue to Seattle and Portland.

Loys of Southwest routes.

Wanted to see it for myself and surprisingly around 1.5 pax per day fly BOS-BUF-LAX with an average fare of $286, who knew...

NK is about to start MSY-TPA in a few days and has TPA-LBE, while F9 has DSM-SFO and TNT-TPA, and G4 has PIT-AUS, PIT-SAV, and AUS-IND but then again, NK, F9, and G4 are known for having a number of seemingly odd p2p routes.

I'm intrigued, how does one go about finding that data?

Well Southwest is a point-to-point airline, so all of their routes are going to be "point-to-point".

Here is a complete list for AA (I think):
BOS-PIT/MDT/SYR/ROC/PUJ/PLS/MBJ
RDU-PIT/LHR
CUN-MCI/STL/PIT/RDU/BNA/BOS

IND/PIT are both focus cities for G4 though, and TTN was/is a focus city for F9 (I don't know its status at the moment)

SJU-RDU would be a p2p flight for G4, SAN-SCK/PVU/ELP, BWI-LEX/TUL/TYS, EWR-TYS would be p2p flights as well

RDU-LHR wouldn’t be a P2P cause LHR is a One World hub, just like RDU-CDG wouldn’t be P2P cause CDG is a Skytem hub.. IMO

Your post made me think about NY state. Was just there and thinking of the older days with NYair and others---there don't seem to be many intrastate flights. Does anyone recall what used to be flown in NY state that isn't today?

Well Southwest is a point-to-point airline, so all of their routes are going to be "point-to-point".

PDX is the second largest hub for AS, the PDX routes listed are indeed with a hub on one end, as well as BUR-SLC for DL, SFO-BUR/SNA for UA. I know you're thinking WN only, but this thread is for any carrier in the US.

I fly this route occasionally. The leaves DVL at 5 am l, hits JMS about 45 minutes later and after about 40 minutes of ground time leaves for DEN. Loads are typically 60% JMS and 40% DVL.

Interestingly the drive between the two cities is about 2 hours and a roijd trip flight between the two cities is around $150.
