This fleet retirement seems to be getting a lot more fanfare than a lot of other recent big retirements.

Seems to be bigger deal than when UA & DL retired the 744s a few years ago.

In a weird way, everyone knows but isn't directly saying it, its the end of the old AA we all knew and loved that brings back nostalgia from the 80s & 90s when many of us gained our passion for the industry/airline/aircraft.

You will be missed by many hard aviation fans AA MD80's, just gonna make spotting more boring for many enthusiast with 90% of the remaining existing fleets looking so the same....2 engines under the wings without much personality!!!!! A well deserved rest for most of you AA MD80's & for you that get an extension on life all the best in your future flying careers!

My first flight was an AA MD-80. CLE-DFW in April 1990. We connected to HNL on a DC-10. I was almost 10 years old. I didn’t mind the big DC-10 much but felt claustrophobic on the MD-80. As I always did with things that scared me, I started learning all I could about planes and eventually became a plane fanatic. So in a way, the AA MD-80 is why I love planes to this day. I owe you one, buddy.

My first flight was on DC9-30 on Eastern LGA-JAX-DAY in September 1969, around 50 years ago. I am a lifetime Platinum of which most of my 2,000,000 miles were on Super 80s. Farewell to the AA Douglas built aircraft, that dates back to the DC3 which AA jointly developed with Douglas. I think the Super 80 farewell is a big deal because it is a passing of an era in aviation, the last vestige of Douglas of Long Beach.

It appears that AA has added 3 ferry flights on Envoy E-170s DFW-ROW-DFW later this afternoon to bring back all the employees and crews going out there today for the MD-80 retirement.

This doesn't quite fit the narrative, but I guess you could say "When AA parks the last MD-80s in the desert, they'll fly them back home on an E-170"

This reminds me when 17 years ago it was the same thing for the 727. When American retired it in 2002, Delta and Northwest were still flying it. They flew it for one more year, following the retirement of the 727 at American.

Roswell International Air Center needs to be renamed "Roswell Int'l. Dog House"!

Talk about the end of an era. God, the number of AA Mad Dogs I flew on, including several of the ex-TW ships. Can't believe the end is nigh.

Correct. These two aircraft, the 738, the A321/321NEO are now the two workhorses of the fleet. If you book a domestic flight on American, there is now a high probability that you will be on one of these two. It is at EasyJet, in Europe, that the A319 is the workhorse.

On AA 2200 CLE-DFW this morning, us savages took everything but the kitchen sink. I have a half dozen cards, others took seat cushions, someone grabbed a coffee pot, and I saw a soap dispenser slide into someones backpack. In DFW, I managed to get the crew of AA 2200 to sign my boarding card, then found an MD-80 model in the employee shop and got the crew of AA 80 to sign it. I also may be in the Dallas Morning News and on Channel 8 in Dallas tonight......

Jeez...looking at the listing of all the AA MD-83's on FlightAware that have either already flow to ROW but even more so the ones still scheduled, nearly all from DFW, it looks as if AA is bombing ROW with wave after wave. LOL Just incredible to see such a mass-retirement in action.

True enough but I didn't see that...wasn't paying attention. And of course that was an even bigger mass-retirement; wasn't it something like ~50 airplanes in one day?

People keep saying this and I don't agree. The MD95/717 was designed by McD and built in Long Beach, regardless of what Boeing marketed it as after the merger. There's nothing Boeing about it besides the naming convention.

Hear, hear!!! My career in the industry began with the AMR family in 1988. I'd suggest that the Super 80s were as eponymous to AA as were the Bob Crandall associations to AA.

Will definitely miss that bird!

Flew on the last OKC-DFW departure yesterday, which brought a quirky streak to an end for me. Since a ride on N7537A in 2005 (also my first ever flight), every one of the 17 flights between that city pair I'd had was on a MD-80. Obviously that's all there was at first, seven a day (or thereabouts). Then RJs started to creep in, then the odd 737, eventually the A319, and so on until only one of the eight or nine frequencies we've had recently was a Super.

As the numbers dwindled, I sought to keep the streak alive for as long as possible. Eventually my goal was to keep it going until AA left me no other choice, and so it was when I stepped aboard a 738 yesterday for #18 between the city pair.

There were a handful of other MD-80 flights not involving that particular pair; a memorable one was a wintertime MSP-DFW with only 12 of us aboard. They seated us in F and let us avail ourselves of the real estate in back after the meal, if desired. Only one flight involved neither city (BWI-STL).

I'll miss those shiny dogs and the music they made. Thanks to the Super 80 for introducing me to the joys of flight from the moment I felt those g-forces on that first takeoff roll.

Im sure when American retires out their 767-323ERs and 757s there wont be this much fanfare.There are a number of retired AA 757s in Rosewell awaiting resale or scrapping.

Don't forget...this is the largest fleet retirement in history. I'd say the Boeing 727's retirement got the same fanfare

There were gate celebrations at both DFW and ORD. Doug Parker was shaking everybody’s hand in DFW as they proceeded down the jetway. Also there were goodie bags that included hats at every seat.
Many people were writing on the walls and overhead bins with permanent marker toward the end of the flight.
My only disappointment was that there was no water cannon salute at either end.
