Southwest And The 757-300.

There was a rumor a while back that SW was going to order 75 757-300s for trans-con routes and the likes. I have heard this rumor again from another individual who stated the same information and number of order. Maybe it is more than a rumor?

Southwest? 757-300? I would be EXTREMELY surprised. Part of the Southwest philosophy is operating small aircraft (i.e. 737-3/700 size) on high frequency routes. It could never do this with a 757. Bear in mind also that Southwest never ordered the 737-400 (or larger).
Of course, competitors would be more than happy to see SW go for something much bigger, which begs the question . . .

Now, this is not being turned around in 20 minutes like the 737s but Condor is turning their 757-300s (Which they LOVE.) around in under an hour. That is from a non-express airline.

Since SW were one of the launch costumers for the new B737-700, if they need a bigger plane (which is also improbable), I would expect them to order B738 and B739 and keep on in the same family (the 73NG one) and not add another plane family (the 757 one) to fleet. The 738 and 739 would have reduced costs on training crew and mechanics.
And, not to say that a B757-200 would be a very large plane for them, so imagine the B757-300!

Hey! You know that the 737-900 will only be 17 (or was it 19) feet shorter than the 757-200. I know, longer, but the 757-200 would be a good choice for SWA. The 757-300 is too big of a leap for them I think. They're [Boeing] still going to make the -200 right?

Notice the person who started this rumor on airliners.net (Workbench... strange name, eh? Sounds like he's up to something, like making it up on a workbench has suddenly dissapeared and only made ine airliners.net post (well it says 5, but that's how it is right?)

While sounds strange, it seems to be a curious idea! Historically speaking, low-fare/no-frills airlines have not been very successful flying long-haul routes, because the full-fare/full-frills airlines could match their prices. This is why People's Express (I always thought this name sound a bit communist) didn't do that well.

International traffic is usually fed by domestic flights. Southwest does not have any hub, which is large enough to stream passengers to its international routes. Therefore, it would fly out of large cities where the local market supply the required traffic. But it is possible that similar international service may be already offered in these circunstances. Keep in mind that larger airlines do match long-haul fares. Also, one should analyse if a Southwest hub in viable. I don't think Southwest's clients are likely to fly international.

However, LAPA Airlines, from Argentina launched recently its 757-200 flight from Buenos Aires to Atlanta. LAPA is a low-cost airline, which is doing well in Argentina.

There are alot more to be argued, because Aerolineas Argentinas has the virtual monopoly in that market and it should not be discussed here, otherwise it will be off the topic. The point is: It remains to be seem if a low-cost airline international airline is a good ideaor not nowadays. There will be nice rewards for those who take the risk!

CX747, I'm sorry but I don't agree with you.
I don't see Southwest with B757-300's, you know very well that Southwest will never order anything but Boeing 737's. SOUTHWEST HAS AN ALL 737 FLEET !
They have never ordered 757-200's, so why would they take the 737-300? If they need an aircraft as large as the 757 in terms of passenger capacity, they will choose the 737-800 or 900. That is evident. The only advantage that the 757 has over the 737 is that the 757 has ETOPS certification which the 737 doesn't (not even NG series). But Southwest doesn't need to be ETOPS certified for their kind of operations and they already have an all 737 fleet like I said, so why would they choose the 757 over the 737-800 or 900 if they need a larger aircraft?
I'm convinced that they'll always stay with an all 737 fleet.

I went to another aviations discussion group,in which SWA employees particitpate,and they stated that the rumor of the 757 was started either earlier this year or last as an April Fool's joke. They stated there are no,repeat no plans to acquire 757s,and they used the same arguments that have already been made about SWA not having to leave the 737 family if it wants to expand. So to SWA employees,this rumor is bunk. Sorry,it would be interesting to see SWA livery on a 757. It would also be interesting to fly on one of them,if you have not flown on SWA,their pilots do some "exciting" flying,safe,but exciting.

Hi. I have relatives that work for Southwest Airlines and the 757-300 or even the -200 will never be seen in their livery at the moment. Southwest did at one point consider the -200 but scrapped it after Boeing rolled out the 737-700 which Southwest launched. The airline simply has no use for a 757 and the 737-700 is certaintly capable of flying trans-con or one stop like SWA does. If Southwest decides it needs a bigger plane it would stay with the 737 family. Also - yes Boeing is planning to still make the 757-200.

I was just talking with some operations agents for Southwest today and they said the big rumor floating around now is the purchase of 737-800s for coast-to-coast flights! That would be interesting, don't you think?

I think Southwest already uses the B737-700 on a transcon route between BWI and OAK . . .

Perhaps The -800 But Not The -900

Because of payload limitations, the B737-900 actually seats the same number of people as the B737-800. The advantage of the -900 is that it gives the airline the possibility to have the same number of seats as in the -800 in a more comfortable config. The seating limit is @ 189 pax. So if SW orders a bigger 737, it will be the 738. They are surely not in the business of offering extra comfort!

Southwest will only own 737s. They really are quite smart in doing so. Look at the different options there are within the series -700s, maybe-800s and -900s if they order them for transcontinental flights, and 200s, 300s, and 500s for shorter flights. They can turn around a 737 in 20 minutes. Also, if a part if broken, they most likely will have it as many 737 parts can be used on all of the series. I can't see them with any 757s.
