Alitalia to JNB & NBO from 2018

Thu Nov 16, 2017 1:31 am

Whilst browsing through Fiumicino Airport on Wikipedia (I know not the best site for reliable information), I saw that Alitalia will be starting:
Johannesburg from April 8, 2018
Nairobi from March 28, 2018

Upon further investigating and dummy bookings on Alitalia's website, this rumor appears to be true.

Is there any kind of market between Italy-Kenya and Italy-South Africa?

Jo burg was announced earlier and is an old route. Nice to see them come back. They expext premium connecting traffic. The business class went up quite a bit. NBO is the odd one. They announced a second new African route but I expected LOS.

When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

What is the traffic between Italy, Switzerland, UK, France, Deutschland, all have service to South Africa. What cargo, companies, and industries are driving all these flights?

Italy is one of the top source tourist markets to South Africa without nonstop service, other 2 featuring in top 10 regularly is India and Canada...so makes sense in a way...while Italy is also one of the most popular destinations in Europe for South Africans again.
With Rome also well positioned for shorter connections onwards to the other big markets north of it.
Some business demand as well

AZ used to operate Boeing 747s into JNB and I recall them achieving very good loads then - no idea about the yield. Flights switched to MD11s once the 742s left the fleet. Good to see AZ back to JNB, and also OS to CPT but wished they had a JNB service as well. Those A313 via NBO to VIE were quite an experience back then!

They are both old historical routes, and were (at least back in the day) solid performers for AZ. A lot of "premium leisure" pax from Italy to both Kenya and SA! I regularly flew AZ A300B4 to NBO via Jeddah! Ahh, the memories....

They would have been better off using the A320’s to NBO to start with and see how traffic builds
Thanks and best Regards

Can that aircraft make it to NBO without restrictions?

I think, at about 3000nm, it will be a stretch for a standard A320.

I believe TK uses 739ERs with auxiliary fuel tanks on IST-DAR and that route is just as long as FCO-NBO.

Also, their A320 family (just noticed A319 mentioned under my post) fleet does not have real J. That makes it a bit impractical for such a flight.

Edit: to add A319

Wow. This airline just refuses to die.
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly

Even cats now agree that Alitalia has more lives than they do...

That said, will be interesting to see if NBO brings added value for AZ (or just fills up on KQ transfer transfer pax). JNB will be tough also, the ME3+TK drain a lot of traffic and a tag to CPT would probably have been useful (but costly) for AZ.

Not bad for a 'bankrupt' airline!

But I would not put 1 € on a AZ ticket to Africa or elsewhere from April 30 next year !

Given that NBO is 5,889ft AMSL it would be nearly impossible for an A320 to make the 2,908nm back to FCO. A319 will do a little better but the payload restrictions would be pretty significant.
