Any connection between the recent NZ 789 engine shutdown on the NRT flight Dec 5 and the blade issues affecting Trent 787s? VS have just decided to lease 4x A332 to cover the down time on their 789 fleet. Hopefully this won't affect NZ.

So this is the second 789 issue in as many days. Let's hope this doesn't signal fan blade issues of the sort that have dogged NH and VS.That could be quite problematic for NZ and travellers during their busy period. How much slack is there in the fleet this summer?

Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines (SIA) plan to boost capacity between Auckland and Singapore from late 2018.

The pair currently operates one flight each on the Auckland-Singapore route, SIA with a combination of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs and Air New Zealand with 787-9s. The Singaporean flag carrier also serves Christchurch from its Singapore hub, as well as a Singapore-Canberra-Wellington rotation that started in September 2016.

All New Zealand-Singapore services are operated as part of an alliance between the pair that was forged in 2015.

Under the expanded schedule, SIA will operate one additional daily flight between October 28 2018 and March 30 2019 (the Northern Winter season) with Boeing 777-300ERs.

From March 31 2019 to October 26 2019 (the Northern Summer season), Air New Zealand will fly its Boeing 787-9 with a premium heavy configuration five times a week on the route.

The new flight, which has been scheduled as a red-eye service from Auckland and morning departure from Singapore, represented an additional 165,000 annual seats on the route, Air New Zealand and SIA said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The Air NZ AKL-SIN will probably be about 1000/1530 to allow the 275 seat 789 to circulate with the two AKL-IAH 275 seat aircraft. Nothing yet on where the fourth 275 seat 789 will go in 2018, maybe HND as ZK-NZL has been used there recently.

Does this mean that NZ will be reducing their flights to SIN from daily to 5/w?

New AKL-SIN schedule as per Scoop, NZ re-timing its current year round night flight to mid morning, SQ and NZ will then share the existing night flight alternating between daily and 5x/weekly depending on the season:

SQ/NZ282 AKL/SIN 0120/0645 SQ/NZ281 SIN/AKL 0845/2335
NZ284 AKL/SIN 1105/1630 NZ283 SIN/AKL1840/0930
SQ286 AKL/SIN 1535/2100 SQ285 SIN/AKL 2245/1340

So let's hope this is reasonably containable. Good to know NZ is making plans to secure additional capacity. This suggests disruption past the already announced changes to 10 December. I wonder what that will look like? Lease of a couple of planes perhaps?

As for CZ, why would they go to WLG? CHC appears to be working well and AKL too and that's 2 cities in a country with a population less than 5 million. Possibly a seasonal service to WLG with 788? Thing is, I suspect most of the mainland Chinese inbound traffic is for AKL or the South Island, surely? Anybody have any stats on this? Korea and Japan too. I'm really scratching the bottom of the barrel trying to come up with a long haul carrier that has the market pull that would fly nonstop to WLG. The only ones I come up with are SQ and they've elected to go via CBR for the time being and EK who could (out of left field) route DXB-SIN-WLG but doesn't seem likely given recent decisions to exit the Tasman from AKL and reduce to two NZ flights per day.

As for tag ons via Australia, we could see another carrier enter WLG but I'm struggling to see who because WLG is not low-cost central, lacks the volume for this and the bulk of the market is from AKL. D7 is slashing capacity to Australia and refocusing capacity within SE Asia. TZ seems unlikely because SQ is already on the route and in terms of volume and demand, they will find it in AKL I don't see CX entering the Tasman so soon after commencing seasonal CHC. Same for TG and MH. EY has to deal with their balance sheet first. PR has just up gauged AKL. And then we're back to square one unless.... NZ or QF offer something (say NZ offer a combined daily service to 2-3 points) but they've already signalled that Asian yields are under pressure and they'd have the added cost of long haul crew base in WLG. Thing is, Wellington has a relatively small population given the required infrastructure and is so conveniently located to AKL and CHC (and for that matter the best coast of Australia) for long haul connections. I'm not seeing it.

Maybe we could see more traffic into WLG from the region - Samoa, Fiji. Maybe WLG is a chance for Fiji Airways to offer daily connections via NAN to Asia and USA :) - they seem to be expanding Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and North America. That wouldn't be a dumb move. Lots of Fijians living in the Wellington region :) and it doesn't require a runway extension.

I know of a carrier which will be launching WLG widebody flights next year on the current runway with an Australian stop. I can't share who though.

Just reading on Twitter that NZ is having 4 787-9 aircraft out of service:

Air New Zealand has now grounded four of its 787s while issues with the intermediate pressure turbine (IPT) blades are resolved. Engines are being sent to Rolls-Royce facility in Singapore. Rolls is addressing same issue with other customers.

There isn’t that many options really. NZ retiming it’s yearround flight to arrive in the morning makes sense to me, it gives more network flexibility rather than having an oddball long haul arrival at 2345, the thing that does work is that SIN can be done daily with 1 frame, but if it breaks there often isn’t a spare unless SYD/MEL arrivals are a 789. In winter not such a big issue with more slack. The only thing I thought was possibly an afternoon arrival for the EZE connections. They could do to work that something like

SQ285 SIN 1840 AKL 0930
SQ286 AKL 1535 SIN 2100

NZ283 SIN 2355 AKL 1445
NZ284 AKL 1105 SIN 1630

Need more than 1 frame per route with longer ground times.

Surprised about the premium 789 going to SIN, I was thinking more likely 772’s to increase premium capacity. Does make it interesting to see where the 4th 789 premium aircraft will go. HND/NRT/HKG?

As a spotter and potential traveller over the period here's hoping for some exotic metal coming this way. A KQ 787 or HiFly A340-500 or something cool like that. Would love to add to the logbook.

Well aren't you a bloody tease. :p But as SQ have shown you can do widebody out of WLG with a stop in Aus so it wouldn't surprise me to see someone else try that if the numbers worked out for them.

Another thing that comes to mind. If Boeing comes out with their rumored new midsize aircraft that could make things interesting for WLG. But only if the thing could take off at MTOW of course. And I've seen people suggest 5000nm range for trans Atlantic work which might put SIN-WLG in the doable column. http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=wlg-sin&MS=wls&DU=nm

But now I'm so far into what if country I should be tagging this as fiction. ;) So many possibilities but all rely on many other things happening first. None of which are guaranteed. :(

EK would be my best guess likely through BNE considering their recent reductions trans-tasman and increase in BNE

Outside chance for CBR but that would be overkill CBR-WLG. There was speculation of CNS from them too, perhaps we could see a 4pw DXB-CNS-AKL and a 3pw DXB-CBR-AKL opens up new secondary markets, add back some AKL capacity. Also puts up more of a fight to SQ and QR's recent additions

It appears the Air NZ 789 fleet has had it's EDTO status downgraded to EDTO240. ZK-NZJ (as this morning's ANZ31) is due into AKL about 1600NZDT via 'IBESO' (north east of East Cape). It has taken a northerly route via 35S / 136W.

ZK-NZC as ANZ61 AKL-RAR has also taken a detour, but this looks like EDTO180. Perhaps the more recent 789s now have EDTO240, the others EDTO180. Could be close for ANZ60 SYD-RAR to get out of SYD before the curfew.

CNS runway is 3,156m (per Wiki), I would have thought that would be more than long enough, particularly for a 777. Though I don't think it will be CNS as the market CNS-WLG is quite small and very little opportunities for connections through the QF network - BNE on the other hand would allow connections to entire QF domestic network, particularly through Queensland.

What isn't a mistake is that Sounds has just introduced its own inflight magazine - "Sounds Good."

This was the last update that I've seen.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news ... t-purchase

"NZ's Sounds Air makes progress on Beechcraft purchase

Sounds Air's CEO Andrew Crawford said that a decision will be made in December, with the new aircraft joining the fleet as early as 1Q18.

"We need to get onto it as soon as possible, so we're actively pursuing a decision. We'd be moving into twin-engines, and two pilots so it would be a huge step for us," Crawford said."

However, I did read that the decision may have slipped to January.

http://3rdlevelnz.blogspot.co.nz/2017/1 ... ns-30.html

"He was also pleased with the Blenheim to Christchurch flights launched last year, three months before the Kaikōura earthquake, and picking up the route dropped in Air New Zealand's regional restructure, he said. Crawford was considering putting larger planes on that route after high demand, and expected to know if it was feasible in January, he said."

Most likely it will be knock on effects from NZ having an couple of 789s grounded for repairs, the 789,77E,77W all operate Tasman/Pacific sectors during the day with 3-4x 789s currently out of service there has been allot of time shifting to keep the Tasman operating.

NZ6 has an allot of down time before it returns as NZ5 so likely they are making the most of that time by trying to fit in an extra 777 short-haul service today.

Delayed from 1930 to 2030 now 2130ETD, aircraft or crew issue most likely. Looks to be ZK-OKM which arrived on time from MEL earlier.

I am on NZ282 tonight (tomorrow 0115) and see it has been upgraded to 787-92 so it will be nice to see the new config, currently in PE but hopeful for a BP upgrade - just for lie flat to get some good Zed's before heading into the office in the morning...

In news on the freight front, skyliner-aviation.de is reporting that B757 N689AA was ferried Roswell-Goodyear on Friday for freighter conversion, and is destined for Airwork.
Could it become the first ZK reg B757?

Just checked in for the SG flight tonight, what a shambles security is, that new system to load your effects into bins is pretty clumsy and slow, the old manual method was better IMO, and only 2 stations open with the queue about 20 minutes long. Although I had express lane, apart from Customs (with no queue at all) it provided no assistance unlike other airports with dedicated express lanes. Not a huge complaint but with all the hype they have been pushing out you would think AA could get the basics a little bit better :-)

I love the prospect of a HiFly A345!! Would jump on one for an impromptu flight in a heartbeat! Saw it in NCE earlier in the year.

Well, the timing of that one is bloody awful.

That one is timed very nicely though.

I find it actually quite scary that the airline's 787s had ETOPS330 certification and yet suddenly they find that half the fleet have cracked turbine blades in the engines and have to ground them. I thought that the whole ETOPS330 certification (which includes additional scheduled engine inspections) was supposed to make situations like this impossible? You know, regular borescopic inspections etc?

This all makes a bit of a farce of the whole ETOPS/EDTO process.

I liked the automatic system. The manual labour method seemed awfully inefficient; you seem to have half of the AVSEC staff spending all their time shuffling the bins from one end to the other.

If nothing else, the higher ceilings in the security area makes for a nicer atmosphere.

Also regarding the new upgrades; I wonder how long until someone falls into that massive hole/amphitheatre thing just after duty free in departures. Its very close to the main throughfare, so someone walking and texting will inevitably fall victim to it.

Any idea what is doing heading to AKL? apart of an tour charter? or has NZ short-term wetleased to help with the 787 issues.

About 6pm local (0700 utc)

It was drifting in and out of coverage on FR24. Sadly it’s an all white plane. But it might just hang around AKL for a while so if you don’t get it on arrival, don’t worry!

I heard it was to do some flying ex AKL, but the crew didn’t say too much. There maybe a 330 coming later in the week.

http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2017/12/10/malaysia-airlines-a350-tokyo-auckland/

Malaysia Airlines will be flying the A350 between Kuala Lumpur and Auckland as of August 5, 2018, replacing the A330.. Along with NRT it's one of four routes announced by the airline (the other two being the two-daily LHR),

MH133 Kuala Lumpur to Auckland departing 9:05AM arriving 11:00PM
MH132 Auckland to Kuala Lumpur departing 12:15AM arriving 7:40AM

Do you think they're trying to compete with AirAsia X? Or does the A350 make more sense economically on this route? Or both?
