Mokulele end SMX ( Santa Maria, CA) appears

Sun Dec 03, 2017 4:01 am

I see, according to Mokulele Airlines' schedule, that they show services ended to Santa Maria on November 30th. I'll assume that is the case since one would hope that it would be accurate.
Amazingly, it seems the lame switch to BUR didn't have the effect of better loads. Anyone with half an idea of an air route knew that was going to be the case.
Too bad that they couldn't make the SMX market work. Good for SBP (San Luis Obispo) I guess...
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Yes I heard the last flight was on Thursday.
The move to BUR was total nonsense as many of us had well predicted when announced late summer.

Why did Mokulele abandon LAX for BUR in the first place? Landing fees? Delays?

Per SMX airport board minutes, Mokulele enplanements fell sharply after the BUR move although they were never large before that.
Oct 2016 - 345
May 2017 - 231
June 2017 - 206
July 2017 - 177
Aug 2017 - 191
Sept 2017 - 106
Oct 2017 - 93

SMX representatives are traveling to St. George in January to meet with Skywest about OO restarting service.

Central Coast Shuttle has been busing passengers down 101/405 to LAX. The bus picks up at the SMX terminal, 3.5 hour drive at $70 one way. Passengers seem to prefer the bus option, maybe because Mokulele did not provide enough interline connections. Per the airport board minutes, boardings for CCS were:
Sept 2016 - 897
Oct 2016 - 954
May 2017 - 1,144
June 2017 - 1,213
July 2017 - 1,151
Aug 2017 - 1,041
Sept 2017 - 1,122
Oct 2017 - 1,104

Damn it. I was planning on taking that flight and then connecting to a JetSuiteX flight to SJC. I'll get my Caravan flight eventually.

As posted in the move thread, Mokulele attributed the move to BUR from LAX on cost and congestion.

viewtopic.php?t=1370949

However for whatever reason they were blind to the fact the entire premise of being able to make lots of beyond connections on the LA end would largely be wiped away by the move to BUR.

A factor here obviously is SMX also does not have an endless pile of cash to help subsidize the flying. Over $1mil has been spent already in revenue guarantees plus freebies on things like rent and landing fees.

SBP was typically boarding more in a day to LAX than MK was doing in a month

I’ve heard rumors that the SBP flights to SFO and LAX may be moving away from prorate/at-risk flights for OO.

This could tempt OO to start up SMX again

They should've tried SAN or a market where a vehicle doesn't compete.

Reading thru the SMX airport board minutes, it appears SMX management was concerned about the lack of interline baggage agreements. They had updated the board several meetings about the lack of agreements.

The rent/landing fees part can be compared to the bus. Per the SMX financials, they have been collecting $6,000 per month from Central Coast Shuttle.

SMX should really be pushing for an OO/AA* flight to PHX. SFO/LAX are both so short that there is essentially no O&D traffic - PHX would have some O&D and offer much of the same connectivity without all the congestion...

I can't believe they're using that ridiculous name on the mainland. Why ?

It’s sad that SMX is an efficient small airport. However with so many seats added down south at Santa Barbara with A319/A320/737 service added by American, United and Alaska and an active college town with a new Terminal like San Luis Obispo up north.

I used Mokulele once but found it too much a hassle on the LAX run.

It's true. Heck, even Great Lakes flying west coast routes makes more sense than that.

But is it really in the best interests to further balkanize central coast air service that way? Drive time from SBP to SMX is about 35 minutes. It's then about an hour from SMX to SBA. Both SBA and SBP have brand new terminals, are better located for the flying public, and already each have a respectable amount of daily seats and destinations. Both SBA and SBP are already connected to PHX, LAX, SFO, SEA, DEN, and DFW (SBA only).

I just don't see how or why anybody could really think decentralizing central coast air service by pushing for more out of SMX is really all that great of an idea.

SMX had UA express service from the 80s until 2016, so it's not like you are talking about some airport that never had scheduled service.

SMX has a nice long 8000' runway, and does not seem to have the community opposition that SBA encounters. Nor does it have SBA's "voluntary" curfew.
