OAG Changes 12/3/2017: B6 Adds EWR-SDQ; DL Moves to DSS

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: Once again. There were some corrupt sections in the source schedule file. If I can get a new version I will add anything from those sections.

Is DKR shutting down in favor of DSS? I see it’s scheduled to open on the 7th Dec.

EW RSW-MUC MAY 0.3>0 JUN 0.3>0 JUL 0.3>0 AUG 0.3>0

Is this a seasonal cut, ongoing post-Air Berlin shuffling, or is RSW totally gone from EW? Air Berlin (and LTU before) made DUS-RSW work for several years. Summer heat and all, historically German carriers in Florida have maintained peak capacity throughout summer.

EDIT - I guess this question could be posed for the entirety of the EW routes posted above. Quite a significant transatlantic cut if so.

Nice to see some IAH adds after a lot of cuts.

And it's cool to see ECP continue to (slowly) add more service over the years.

Im surprised you didnt * AS on JFK-SEA

Never had 2 daily.

This combined with the new lounge in T7 is showing a commitment to transcons.

DL is reducing JFK-HAV. I guess more HAV frequencies are now up for grabs. And here we thought New York to HAV was a bit more "safe" from cuts.

The development of ASE into a year-round destination, not just for the traditional United Express to DEN but also now AA and Delta, is extremely impressive - all the more so given the parallel development and year-round growth at (relatively) nearby and complimentary EGE.

Interesting, indeed - notably, the second flight for peak months is another (later) morning departure westbound. Between Mint, AA going up to 3x daily and now Alaska going 2x daily, on top of the traditional strength of Delta and United, NYC-SEA is going to be more crowded next summer than it has been in a very long time, if ever.

Indeed, I wonder if anything outside of the bottom half of Florida is safe. I wouldn't be surprised to see MCO vulnerable -- it has the weakest O&D of the Florida markets to HAV, and it's down to an E190.

Thanks enilria! Pretty interesting changes this week.

Not surprising. It remains to be seen if B6 maintains its 2nd spring/summer frequency in this market through the fall/winter. With the AS add, it almost forces B6's hand - especially as it rolls Mint service out to SEA-JFK/BOS.

As I said in the separate thread about this, it's a low-risk add that should help B6 consolidate its pricing power on the huge NYC-DR VFR market.

Are these unused slots now available to other carriers to request? I could see B6 making a run for them, especially since B6 is requesting 7 weekly frequencies from those returned by NK/F9 (and now AS).

DTW reductions:

-CVG: basically took a CRJ-700 away, not much loss.
-GRR: a loss of a CRJ to an upgrade of the last flight becoming a 757.
-MDW: lost a CRJ-700, more capacity being added to ORD.

JFK HAV was banking heavily on tourism to Cuba, the Cuban population in the tri state area is sizeable but it is concentrated in New Jersey. These Cuba flights will really only work from S Florida (mostly MIA) and to a much smaller extent TPA.

It's already announced that DUS - RSW and DUS - MIA (both 3 weekly) will be taken over by SN Brussels (plus a few Carribean flights) in S18. However, more annoucements are expected whereby flights are shifting from Eurowings to SN Brussels as the fleet of Eurowings has reached its contractual limit. The expectation is that these SN Brussels flights (and aircraft) will revert to Eurowings once the EW unions have reached a deal with Lufthansa.

Yes, AA started MIA-SEA shortly before AS moved over to FLL about 5 years ago now.

Thanks. I remember the SN connection with EW bust wasn't sure if that was relevant here. Will they operate using the low J A340s LH is moving away from Cityline?

I'm assuming it is either a filing error or they are removing their flights from GDS. No idea.

I *think* there have been other cases where frequency was reduced, but not eliminated and it did not create a reallocation case. Not sure the rules, but I think they are allowed to reduce frequency for a period of time.

Interesting

No doubt! Between LH mainline, LH Cityline, Eurowings, and now SN it's getting ridiculous. A hodgepodge of a long haul operation.

Of course. Why would it not? Twice daily, and the morning flight is on an A319, which AA has in a horrendously uncomfortable, dense configuration, not much worse than Spirit.

Not surprising. It remains to be seen if B6 maintains its 2nd spring/summer frequency in this market through the fall/winter. With the AS add, it almost forces B6's hand - especially as it rolls Mint service out to SEA-JFK/BOS.

I believe B6 is going twice daily permanently since they started the 2nd mint before they normally start the summer frequency. And they also don't seem to do seasonally adjustments with mint.

Maybe B6 will continue adding EWR to Islands like EWR-KIN/PAP/POP/NAS, which they already dominate out of JFK and have zero or 1 daily from UA. But then again, there are many places they can add if they can get the gate space.

At this point, maybe DOT can do B6 favor by not awarding them any additional slot to HAV.

Any idea where the 2nd slot for JFK-SEA comes from?
AS now up to 5 daily on NYC-SEA market. This certainly is going to be a very heated market by coming summer. I wouldn't be surprised if AA trims back to 2 daily by the time summer rolls around.

AS twice to JFK is huge. Shows they won’t back off of transcontinental markets. Hopefully the combined AS/VS can do well from the East Coast.

There is clearly demand to HAV from outside MIA, but it does indeed appear that airlines are struggling to cater to such demand profitably.

This past week, AA and JetBlue submitted dueling filings to the DOT regarding the open case for the freed up HAV frequencies (Frontier and Spirit, and now Alaska). Specifically, AA requested that the DOT "require all carriers providing scheduled passenger service between the United States and Havana to submit complete traffic data and load factors for their U.S.-Cuba services through at least October 2017, and November 2017, if available." AA clearly believes that traffic figures are going to support its case for additional MIA-HAV frequencies - presumably because, as expected, demand on MIA-HAV continues to far outpace all other U.S.-HAV markets.

The added flight is a 2233 JFK arrival and 0930 departure - at those off-peak times, I'm not sure Alaska would have any trouble with gate/slot access.

Not sure if this cut back is more severe than usual. I do recall it being difficult to find any flights between MSP-DFW in the summer in previous years.

Waiting to see what adds and substractions SY makes next year as part of their new business plan.

The Trump Administration reimposed restrictions on travel to Cuba. Traveling there for leisure is very difficult, and I'm sure demand has suffered accordingly. I doubt this will be the last cut by those flying there.

This must be performing very well for them. They just began their second season in EYW and they've already extended it. While I don't think they'll go year round just yet this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen when they announce their re-start next year.

No. Yes. Yea. (Assuming next year will be about the same as this year.)
It was offered this year (2017) as a Saturday only r/t, and for only the peak summer months - mid-June thru late August. AFAIK, the route was never officially announced by AS.

Also, re: the SEA-JFK offering by AS, it does appear that both r/t are timed so no slots are needed at JFK. But not very good schedules. IF Alaska could get their hands on any slots, they would certainly be offering an early morning SEA departure (with an early evening w/b return) and probably an early afternoon SEA departure (between noon and 1:30p) with the return flight leaving JFK sometime around 9pm.

I am hoping that since the move to T7 by AAG at JFK, and once the dust settles, SAN will be next in line to see a r/t - prolly a red-eye e/b like SEA and PDX. (I have from a couple of sources that this is a distinct possibility.)

Simply put, this is a market F9 overlooked. F9 skipped over BWI, even though it's a low cost airport and the most used airport in the WAS metro region. F9 is the larger ULCC in the fast growing DEN region with a hub.

As F9 remains missing in BWI while it goes after less than daily in FAT and PNS, NK can keep growing in BWI and adding routes without the F9 competition there.

As far as WN, well I've seen it on BWI-ATL fares. WN has hub-hub and charges high last minute fares and has a business pax base, so it has no reason to really discount fares. Meanwhile up in PHL, it seems WN has to discount PHL-ATL with AA in the picture offering Basic Economy. With WN having hub-hub on BWI-DEN, it can likely continue high faring and NK will succeed attracting pax that want lower fares and want to use BWI, not DCA or IAD.

That’s why NK is so powerful at DTW, NK runs DEN year round over F9. They don’t have pressure from F9 or WN, it’s why NK has developed DTW into essentially a fortress, it’s what they see with BWI too, it just won’t be as big, but definitely a focus City.

Is Dakar even a profitable destination for Delta? I know Delta is unique in that it serves Africa but I don't possibly see how a route to Senegal is profitable. Why not Nairobi or Cairo? DL has 3 destinations in West Africa all relatively close to each other (Accra, Lagos, and Dakar) but no Nairobi (this seems to be the most obvious hole), Cairo, Dar es Salaam, Casablanca, etc. Is there a specific business link or is there just a large senegalese population in NYC?

Is this a new route? Saturday-only? Seasonal?

No. Yes.

I could see AS starting SJC and SAN routes to JFK in the near future.
