DL 158, Last DL 747 flight

Sun Dec 10, 2017 3:13 am

So this is it. Unless I missed some grand exit announcement out of Delta, there is just 6 days remaining. My love of aviation started @ DTW watching a NW Orient 747 pull into it's gate. Living in rural Michigan, Northwest and DTW was my connection to the world. Flying those Saab's and Avro's into DTW, only to taxi by the heavies, what a sight!

Godspeed Queen of the Skies!

12/17 ICN-DTW is the final scheduled flight.

Delta just had a Skymiles auction through SkyMiles Experiences to bid for seats on the farewell tour flights.

Auctions were:
Hangar Party in Detroit
Farewell Flight (DTW-SEA) and Hangar Party in Seattle
Farewell Flight (SEA-ATL) and Hangar Party in Atlanta
Farewell Flight (ATL-MSP) and Hangar Party in Minneapolis

Before the bidding ended, I saw one of the packages up to 321,000 skymiles.

Do you know how to get on one of the charters?

Haha, yes true. The last charter I believe will be evening of 12/31, the Buffalo Bills returning home FLL to BUF.

Really wish they would repaint one of these birds in the NW livery, would be simply perfect.

See, @JumboJet, aren't you glad you're going to the hockey game now instead of blowing 350,000 miles for a flight that's not really the last flight (not including the eventual flight to VCV.)

Apart from, you know, all the ones flown to and in the US that don't have the letter N at the start of their registrations...

Atlas has four 744s in passenger configuration, two of which operate for the Angolan national petroleum company Sonangol between Luanda and Houston.

They also have a few other passenger times in service, including a 738, a 762, and six 763ERs.

Did they get rid of their 747-400 passenger aircrafts recently?

They do pax charters as well. They have 2 744s that are available for charter and 2 that seem to be on a contract in Africa.

I hope they actually go to MZJ like the rest. If I find out when I may just have to take the plane down there and have an "issue" so I can record the last touchdown.

Maybe someone at DL can post the exact times but probably pretty close to this.

Game is Sunday Noon on 12/31.

They will normally leave BUF the day before so Saturday 12/30 about 100 or 200pm local, look for the aircraft to ferry into BUF about 1000 or 1100am that morning. About 2.5 hours flight time to FLL. What DL will do with the aircraft after arrival at FLL I do not know but guessing they will leave it there.

Game is over about 3 pm 12/31, figure departure from FLL about 600pm local with arrival back to BUF about 830pm then ferry home to base an hour or so later.

Call sign should be Delta 8865 Heavy.

Wow, they had already officially announced that the 17th flight would be the last revenue flight. There will be a ton of pissed off people following this new announcement I feel. @JumboJet, weren't you scheduled to be in the 17th flight on the upper deck? I wonder if they have offered to waive the fees for people to change flights?

Where did they "officially" announce it as the final flight. A number of forums and blogs have picked up that it was the final scheduled flight, but I see no official press releases from DL on that fact. They've been making a big deal out of the farewell tour on the 18th and 19th with the auction that was open to the public, but I have yet to see anything pubilc from DL about flight DL158 on the 17th until this announcement.

If it weren’t for the fuel tank mod issue, I think we would see it stick around longer. 77Ls being subbed for 350s in January already.

It appears increasingly likely that my one and only 747 flight was on a NW 742 from AMS-MSP back in 2002.

Should depart TPA appx 14:30 on Saturday and arrive CLT ~90 minutes later. Then the return should depart appx two hours after game ends.

Flight number is DL 8876 and IIRC, DL uses the same flight number on the positioning flights so if you are in TPA, check it prior to Saturday and perhaps you can get a quality landing view.

Does someone have the exact times for both TPA 744 arrival and departures?

Should depart TPA appx 14:30 on Saturday and arrive CLT ~90 minutes later. Then the return should depart appx two hours after game ends.

Flight number is DL 8876 and IIRC, DL uses the same flight number on the positioning flights so if you are in TPA, check it prior to Saturday and perhaps you can get a quality landing view.

Thanks, I really appreciate the info! Do you happen to know which day this is, and what time it arrives at TPA? (Where is it coming from/flight #)

Anyone know the flight number for the SEA-DFW charter on 23 DEC ?

Seahawks flight number is 8875, assume it will be the same.

Good luck, used to be able to check charter flight status on delta.com but not sure if still can.

When they flew to JAX Delta ferried the B763 (N1402A) from ATL they used 8771 for the deadhead leg, not sure where the B744 would be coming from.

The teams usually arrive the day before the game unless it is a long cross country flight then they often arrive two days prior.

Just start checking flightaware Saturday morning for enroute/scheduled arrivals for the B744 coming in. No idea where it will be coming from but flightaware will show it as soon as they file the flight plan.

Anyone know when will the flight land in ATLANTA? I want to catch it 1 last time. It’s very sad every time I drive by the airport and see N661US, being fame to the ground and never will fly again.

I was wondering what the January 350>>777 equipment subs thing was about.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the fuel tank mod issue?

Just wondered if it's something the A350s will all have to get post-delivery or just the initial few that are already flying need it...?

University of Georgia will return from Los Angeles and the Rose Bowl aboard a 747, early in the morning January 2.

The fuel tank mod issue is for the 744, not the 350. The FAA mandated after TWA 800 that nitrogen generation systems to inert the fuel tanks must be installed on all 747's by the end of 2017. It's a very expensive part to fit and DL/UA decided to retire the fleet instead of spending money to fix it. I personally don't buy the excuse that a single part could actually be so expensive as to effectively ground an entire fleet of profitable longhaul airplanes that still have at least a couple more years of useful life left in them but alas, that is their reasoning. Even if the 787/350 are more fuel efficient, I doubt that it was a smart decision to retire a useful, profitable airplane.

Oh okay, gotcha. Yeah the fuel tank mod on the 744 I am aware of.

I was wondering why the 777 has been put on a few 350 Asia out-and-backs in January, a month in advance. Maybe just lack of aircraft or crew and needs some slack.
