you know what, these new planes have the potential to fly TATL. I would bet that's where some of them will wind up.

Especially as the ETOPS 757-200s get retired in the coming years. Maybe even some transcontinental stuff too. Would be cool to see lie-flats on these new planes.

Might be time to stop thinking about one airplane directly replacing another. The MD-80s, MD-90s, and most 757s will be retired. There are still roughly 130 Boeing 737-900s and Airbus 321s on order. Add 100 A321neos and you pretty much have that covered.

It would lead to a large A321 fleet. Delta has 120 A321CEO’s on order already. Similar choice as AA, Spirit, Jetblue, Frontier, Hawaiian, Virgin America.

What I see happening is that the all the narrowbody planes on order will allow a shuffle to first replace the MD-80s, then the MD-90s, and then the 757s and as well possibly 767s on some missions. They invested lots of money on 757 cabin retrofits, I would they will be retired after the MD-80 and MD-90 which haven’t had nearly as expensive cabin mods done.

Want to fly within the Southeast, you're best options are DL and AA, and both have sizable Airbus fleets.

Most of those commentators and conspiracy theory pushers were using America First, MAGA, and all the other Trump crap as a means for tamping down Airbus expectations. Fortunately, Delta chose the best airplane and terms for shocker, Delta's needs. It won't stop the theme from coming back again and again, but hopefully you mods will delete the sillier stuff.

So glad that Pratt's big risk on the GTF is translating into sales. I agree with other posters that this is as much a GTF story as it is a Boeing or Airbus story. I really hope this means that Delta is willing to fight for the C-Series even if the February ruling is negative and they have to wait for Mobile-produced CS1s and CS3s.

Absolutely. I don't see it happening however. Boeing has adopted the Shareholder First at all costs Business Plan. IMO, the Commercial Aircraft Division plays a distant fiddle to Boeing's Defense Divisions these days. All political, and all the makings for a perfect storm of being behind the 8 Ball down the road.

Bit of a blow to the NMA/MOM business case. The first objective was to slow sales of the A321neo.

I can't say that this decision is a surprise. I fly Delta exclusively and, after flying the 757-300 and A321-200 last week, and the 737-900 the week before, I have to say that nothing will ever replace the 757 but I prefer the A321 over the 737 any day. The comfort level of the A321 over the 737 is noticeable, at least to me.

Timing is perfect. Only yesterday news anchors were suggesting that Airbus moving out of AL if they voted a certain way.

Congratulations to DL and Airbus. Boeing should show some respect to US carriers and stop depending on imaginary large orders of very large planes.

Quite happy with that outcome. From my amateur-ish perspective Boeing ruthlessly tried to extinguish BBD with their heavy-handed assault on the CSeries, screwing over DL in the process - and even though DL's decision now may have been made purely due to being offered a better deal by Airbus, it still feels like a victory over a bully.

As much as I wanted a Boeing order, I think DL made the right choice with the A321. The 757's are getting old, and while many will say that the A321 isn't a 757 replacement (and I don't disagree), it's the closest plane being produced right now. Boeing should have focused on a MOM much earlier instead of the MAX program. It would be interesting to see some DL One configured A321neos though!

Why is that? Boeing sold more of their inferior -900/900ER/MAX9/MAX10 than one could ever have expected. And they really can be proud of turning a regional jet that almost nobody wanted to buy at launch into a great succuess story. They just should accept that the top-size derivates are just good for a certain niche.

Orders for the A321neo were at 1512 end of November. With presumably 100 for Delta, 156 for indigo partners and the firmed 50 for Qatar Airways from last week it is now at 1818.
It just overtook the A321ceo with 1793 orders.

Bonkers.

Edit: QR already had 16 A321neo on order. Only 34 are new/conversions from the A320neo. So we are at 1802.
I'm pretty sure I missed some other small orders, though.

Agreed. Boeing is out there squeezing that last drop of toothpaste out of the tube knowing they should have for the last 3 days stopped at the store to get a new tube. To me they are wasting time and losing market share all while trying to hold onto the glory of the program. You can throw numbers at all of us all day long but the longer this continues the more behind the 8 ball Boeing will be and it pains me being a fan of them.

They did have something to lose though: They lost Canada's F18 order, and they haven't gained anything - tariffs on the CSeries aren't going to convince anyone to buy the 737-7.

If they "knew" then why would they bid?

This goes farther than DL, with them owning 49% of AM, they can very well kick Boeing to the curb there as well.

DL can operate any engine be it the Leap or the GTF and make money on the MRO work done on those engines.

I was disappointed when DL dropped it's 787 order but the same can't be said about choosing the A320 over the 737. Airbus makes more comfortable aircraft than Boeing. Anyone who sees this as a political attack on american manufacturing falls into the same consortium of people who are too lazy to improve it in the first place. Congratulations Airbus and Delta.

Outside of some being built in Mobile. A lot of components of these planes are from US manufacturers.

Plus outside of final assembly, look at the 787, most of it is manufactured none other than outside of the US.

Did DL ask their FAs for equipment preference? If the majority of the applicable FAs prefer working on the A321 then it is a major factor, everything else being equal.

Airbus continues to roll on into 2018, The 321NEO is an exceptional aircraft and seems to fit DLs needs very well. Boeing is no doubt very disappointed but they had to have seen this as a strong possibility given the politics surrounding the C Series debacle and how DL fit into that with tits sizable order.

Not surprised, but very disappointed. I thought the 737 MAX would have a place in Delta's fleet.

And I'm sorry, but nothing anyone can say on here can convince me that politics did not play a role in this decision. Sure, I'm positive Airbus has given Delta more competitive bids at times, but the fact that Delta is not going to fly either the 737 MAX or the 787 Dreamliner leads me to believe something is fishy.

Sure, perhaps the C-Series debacle (which I agree Boeing should not have pursued that) played a role, but Delta was trending Airbus before that. Most of their JV/Skyteam partners (KLM, Air France, Korean Air, etc) fly the Dreamliner and/or the MAX, Delta's competitors in the US are flying the Dreamliner and MAX, why isn't Delta? And before you say there is no need for it, there are plenty of routes where the order of 787-8's they cancelled last year would have been useful, particularly on a lot of these non-hub TATL flights they are launching (such as RDU-CDG, IND-CDG, MCO-AMS, etc). They will have to replace the 767's and 757's they use on those routes at some point, and the A350 and A321 can't replace them all.

I'm sure the A321's will be fine planes for Delta, but it really is a shame they can't find a place for the MAX or the Dreamliner. Perhaps Delta will wait for the 797/MOM.

I'm the last fan of the Trump administration, but I think it a bit naive to posit that the Boeing tariff spat mattered here (or mattered the most). Publicly traded companies have a clear fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder value (i.e. Pick the best plane), which generally does not include "proving" things to their suppliers.

That said, as someone who frequents a DL route with a dozen daily A321s, I say bring it on. Great plane.

I think this is as much a PW order as Airbus order. With the incoming CS frames Delta will likely be the largest PW engine operator in the world. This tells me DL believes in PW technology despite the early problems. Big win for both Airbus and PW. Congratulations to both.

What about the cs300 in Delta titles currently parked in Atlanta? Should we expect order news there too tomorrow?

The CS100 will replace the MD-88 and the MD-90. The A321 will replace the B757...

If you are talking missions, I think the 737-800 will replace the MD-80/90. The new A321s and -900ERs will backfill the -800s and replace some 757s.. And there's always the possibility of DL acquiring some used airplanes to fill the gaps.

There are no less than 3 posts above addressing this. It’s for investors day. Further the CS300 logo is covered with a C Series logo, probably to emphasize no order.

Let's see if Boeing learns a lesson on not messing around with one of your customers.

At this point I’d hardly call Delta a Boeing customer. Since the merger they’ve purchased only the 739, at end of line pricing and canceled 40 of them, along with the 787 debacle. Whether or not the CSeries complaints and subsequent tariffs happened, this was going to be an Airbus order. Delta is as much a Boeing customer as AC is an Airbus customer. They’ve bought a few cheap airframes from one side, but all of the high profile RFPs have gone only one way in recent years. For AC the 777, 787 and MAX. For DL, the A330N, A350, A321 and A321NEO.
Looks like the future for the US3 will be a mostly Boeing UA, a half and half AA and a mostly Airbus DL. This order is mostly a victory for PW. Airbus was going to win this order, I’m more curious as to how much Boeing actually invested in it. Boeing does not like working with DL and it started long before the CSeries. In terms of pilots and FAs over heard plenty who favor both, it really is up to personal preference and configuration especially for FAs.

Fascinating to see the A321 has all of a sudden gone from having a somewhat minimal prescence in America with just US to becoming a hot commodity for the fleet networks off AA, DL, B6, NK, F9, HA, and VX -> AS.

Glad to see this airplane selling very well in North America.

This Canadian is VERY happy with Delta's decision, the C-Factor fallout is just beginning, time to immediately end the 300% proposed tariffs. Huge congrats to Delta for being such a class-act and making a decision based on best-product for the needs of their business and customers.
