ANA has permanently retired another 77"A", JA701A, line-no.77, built 1997. The aircraft has been ferried to VCV for part-out and scrap. More ANA shorthaul-T7s will surely follow in coming months.

Aeromexico has returned a second 77E to the lessor, N745AM, line-no.554, at the end of a 12-year contract. I think this 2006-built frame has a good chance to be picked up by another airline.

I flew on a 21 year old CX 772 yesterday (B-HND). Inside, the aircraft cabin is as good as new and a very comfortable Y class ride for 4hr 24 mins.

Hopefully -MRA is preserved in some way. This aircraft is a certified record-holder flying from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur in just 21h, 23mins back in 1997.

If I´m not mistaken South Korea has a 20 year limit on airliners. This means the first KE-777s should be retired this year.

Also it would be interesting to know what Air Frane is planning, especially when their 77Es will be replaced. Currently their A343s are being phased out, and the 77Es aren´t much younger.

The floor structure of the passenger 777s are made from composites and aren't strong enough for cargo operations. To convert a 777 from passenger to cargo config would require all of the floor beams to be replaced with metal ones and is considered uneconomical.

Not true, IAI Bedek has been testing a possible conversion on an ex MH 772 at TLV (9M-MRI now N105GT) and found it viable. Rumors around is the OZ will be the launch customer of the 777 P2F program (not confirmed yet)

9M-MRI has been reported as having been scrapped back in 2014.

I agree.

To be precise, the record was for disance (12,455 miles) not time, as we went the "wrong" way -- eastbound. The main record of that flight was Speed Around the World (552.52 mph). I like to say "I flew around the world in the dark" as every one of my cockpit rotations it was pitch black out.

MRI was used as a static test frame for 777 P2F conversion evaluation. Aircraft sits on the ground in TLV minus landing gear and wings, fuselage is still mostly intact but missing a lot vital parts

Who is buying/leasing used 777s (if anyone)? I'm being lazy and not going through all the posts. It always amazes me how quickly a widebody type can become unsellable. We've seen it with A340s, 747s, and I believe now 777s.

There are quite a few 777s here in Goodyear in various stages of part-out or long-term storage. The -200s are scrapped almost immediately once they get here. We've had one -300 here for over a year now, ex-Emirates A6-EMP.

Problem is, there isn't a demand for freighters supporting the 777 at the moment either. I think Bedek worked on their project but those floor beams seem to have been written off as a deal-breaker. Otherwise that MH 777 they took as a test frame wouldn't be sitting derelict.

Redoing a 772ER as a freighter is prohibitively expensive if it requires major internal surgery, and the 767 is a much better platform for conversions. Add in those Russian aircraft that were returned to lessors and the market is pretty poisonous at the moment.

Wow, there goes another A.net myth. The article is now 9 months old however, and we haven’t heard anything since. Not that i doubt Bedek at all, they have a fine reputation when it comes to conversions.

Two more very recent retirements:
772 ANA JA8969
77E Saudia HZ-AKN

Questionable is the fate of SQs 77E 9V-SQK which was damaged by a burning tow truck in November, possible affecting the avionics bay. There are rumours it has been declared w/o.

I hope Boeing and/or the Museum of Flight can get their hands on Triple Seven One after CX retires her.

That would make a nice addition to the museum's collection :)

Sure.

Someone mentioned CX is going to retire the small 772 subfleet this year, though nothing official yet.

The #1 pax to freight converter has a launch customer?!? That is HUGE news! And yes, I realize they probably aren't #1 on anything (except maybe 767 this year? I'm sure someone here knows more.). But they seem to convert everything. At least it seems that way.

When I started my career, the 777 was the latest and greatest. So I do not feel so :old: knowing it shall find conversion.

It says, the first 777P2F would be handed over in 2 1/2 years from now. But since this article was posted back in April last year nothing has been heard of since. A bit odd actually if its "Huge news". I´d be cautious.

This from 'na' recently. "And With 1537th 777 (77W AI VT-ALV) just delivered."

So less that 10% of 777s have been retired or scrapped, so far.

CX will be retiring two 777-200s this year, B-HNL will be the first in April followed by B-HNB in August. The three remaining ones will leave the fleet early next year.

Each 772’s retirement will match the delivery of an ex Emirates 773A. The engines from the 772s will be removed and fitted to the Emirates ones, as the deal did not include the engines. They will of course be updated from Trent 872, to 884Bs like the ones on our current 773 fleet.

This year, B-KPB will be our first 777-300ER to retire. Mentioned on another thread that this will go to Nordwind. B-KPC will retire next. Apparently a total of five 77Ws will leave by 2020.

Thank you for this peace of information. So the 777 prototype will be the very first CX 777 to retire, and it will loose its engines. Maybe Boeing will convert it to P&W again and bring it home?
The first EK 773 has been ferried from storage in Teruel to Kuala Lumpur, so its former A6-EMN that is perhaps going to CX.

At what point will the 777 retirement rate be larger than the current 777 delivery rate - and thus a net decrease in the worldwide active 777 fleet?

Must have got damn good deals on those ex EK773s to use those instead of using their refurbing their own relatively low-cycle 77Ws for regional work.

Certainly during the 77W/77X transition period. And I expect also some time in the 2020s as the 77X wont likely be produced in the numbers its predecessor was.

Each pair of Emirates RR engines off the 773 will be fitted to the corresponding CX 772 just for the single ferry flight to wherever it has to go.

A6-EMN is not coming to CX.

The CX ones will be: (in order of delivery date)

A6-EMR - B-HNS
A6-EMT - B-HNU
A6-EMV - B-HNV
A6-EMQ - B-HNW
A6-EMX - B-HNX

The 77Ws that CX are retiring are all leased. With lease costs much more for those than the ex- Emirates 773s, they do not want to keep too many 77Ws. Also, the 77Ws are a lot heavier structurally than the 773 and cost more to operate, with higher fuel burn. The engines provide more thrust than is needed. CX "misusing" their long haul fleet for regional services has been a long time part of their strategy. Overall this may be the lesser of two evils but ultimately not that efficient a use of your planes, especially ones which are being removed off the longhaul network as more A350s arrive. With traffic levels growing and yields dropping, CX needs large capacity aircraft to fly around the regional and the ex-Emirates 773s will provide that. They will be the first 10-abreast 777s in the fleet and will carry almost 430pax per aircraft (Up from 398 on the current 773s).

Interesting. These are exactly the last five EK 773s still active, so CX wont get one of the frames which are stored already.

Thanks for the great information CX Flyboy! Just out of curiosity - the EK 773As are currently fitted out with an older version IFE than what is in the CX 777s at the moment. Do you know if there are any plans to refurbish these or will they be accepted as is?

As far as I know the planes will have no trace of EK left in them as far as the passenger is concerned. The IFE in the 773s is pretty old though....surely the Emirates ones can't be older?!

As far as I know the planes will have no trace of EK left in them as far as the passenger is concerned. The IFE in the 773s is pretty old though....surely the Emirates ones can't be older?!

Actually the IFE in the CX 773s appear to be the Panasonic eX2 (or possibly eXK), which is definitely a generation ahead of what's currently in the EK ones although they are, like you said, not the newest. The EK 773s have the Panasonic s3k, which I'm fairly sure came before the X-series IFE.

I didnt mention them as they have been placed elsewhere already. The first is currently under refurbishment for Austrian Airlines.

Seems like HS-TJA is not permanently wfu after all. She is currently shuttling between SIN and BKK.

777 ln.1, the prototype operating for CX since 2000, hasn´t flown in a week. Reportedly scheduled for retirement next month, it probably has been withdrawn from use a few weeks earlier.

No recent flight also for ln.46, the second-to-last 772 of China Southern, scheduled for retirement this year.

Also, ln.17, very rarely flown since 2006, has been stored already sometime ago: https://www.planespotters.net/airframe/ ... e/6RJytn2o

The used aircraft market is very different from what it was 20 years ago. It used to be that most freighters were converted airliners. But that seems to be less and less the case, especially with the major carriers. FX and 5X used to have mostly 727s, most of them converted, as the backbones of their fleets. Now, almost all of their planes they are acquiring are purchased new (except for 757s.) I believe two factors are driving this trend; first, the dramatic increase in fuel economy for new designed aircraft, and the increased maintenance cost for older aircraft. And finally, the 777 and A380 face the fact that they are not as easy to convert to freighters as were older generation aircraft. So it seems that the 777 and A380 will enjoy shorter flying careers than their predecessors. And when you consider the vast numbers of 77Ws that were delivered in a relatively short time and are starting to come off lease there will be a lot more relatively young and healthy planes with nowhere to fly, and probably quite a few of those will end up at the scrapper. But one thing to note is how few of the 777s have crashed, and all but one crashed for reasons that were clearly not the aircraft’s fault, and that one was because of the engines.
