Every European airport, except the holiday destination in Spain, sees less traffic during the holidays.

I can't believe that this topic was brought up in the first place as it's so bloody obvious and it's nothing new it's the norm at this time of year for obvious reasons and has happened for decades. But it's obviously not the same worldwide especially in those countries that don't celebrate the festive period.

Some of the reasons and explanations to this topic have been totally ridiculous to be honest and some of them beyond a joke.

Very much an exception though:

Europe's biggest airports handled in excess of 300 flights on Christmas day.

Actually, the question is legitimate and contradict yourself as you mentioned that other parts of the world are different, and this is an international forum.

In the airline world, having 10 748s sitting on the ramp for a primarily hub airline like LH is a legitimate question. I've been on several Christmas Day flights on LH and LX and the M class was oversold by 50/60 seats. C class is another story.

I appreciate everyone's feedback.

Nope. Absolutely no one I worked with worked in December of 2014 in IAH. For almost a whole month there wasn't an LH flight into Houston.

This is ridiculous. According to OAG schedule data, LH had flights scheduled December 1-23 in 2014. According to DOT T-100 data, they operated 21 flights.

Looking back on it, it may have just been the time spanning Christmas and New Years. Either way, I didn't have a good time working there and I've moved on.

Moved on, really, after several posts on the subject?

Can't get away from it even on a.net, posts reflecting personal feelings rather than facts, jumping to unions, bad management, LH cancelling flights for nearly a full month to a city but then backing down after called on it but having planted an idea in others' minds.

After reading all the posts and looking at the photos, here's the reality.... many European hubs have planes parked this time of year. Demand is lower. Flights aren't scheduled in the first place, they're not "cancelled" (looking through my paper Flight Guide, plenty aren't operated on 12/25 and/or 12/26). Even Ryanair reduces its schedule.

So it would be normal for other airlines to park 53% of their high capacity planes during one of the busiest travel times of the year? UA doesn't park 30 something 772s this time of year. Many people here, including myself wouldn't know the rationale for this so jumping to conclusions that it is 'obvious' isn't true. Just because we all are not as informed as you doesn't make the post meaningless or non-discussion worthy.

Ryanair do not operate any flights from 24/12 afternoon to 26/12 lunchtime. That is down to the Irish tradition of closing everything on 25/12 and most of 26/12 (DUB is fully closed on 25/12). Otherwise, Ryanair operates an increased schedule before Christmas and immediately after with extra flights on many routes.
