FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Merry Christmas to all who wish to be merry!

This is apparently the schedule load where the airlines sneak in the bad news when nobody but a.net will notice!

WOW big cuts at AA system. Good to see DTW-MUC on Delta starting earlier very good sign or perhaps they are hearing a rumor that LH is going to add MUC-DTW and want to get a foot hold.
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

Could this be a sign that QR is cutting into LH's ATL-India traffic ?

I'm not sure that's definitely net negative for AA. They did add a bunch of long-hauls from LAX. ORD definitely looks down for April.

I thought that add was unusually close in for a Delta long-haul add. They basically have 120 days to sell those new flights.

Ehh, I don't know if I'd call MSP weak. They're taking one weekly frequency away from MSP-MSY and cutting PHL, however they're adding MYR three times a week and SEA daily. So they're still up in net frequency, just reallocating some of the resources.

For the MSP-PHL cut, it's probably more that AA is aggressive with the Basic Economy on the PHL side. NK has cut ORD, gone "seasonal" for DTW out of PHL, where at BWI NK has been more solid and hasn't cut one route. Southwest just doesn't have an equivalent of Basic Economy and doesn't discount fares for last minute bookings. There is some side competition with F9 offering MSP-TTN as well.

I think it’s time for B6 or WN to take advantage of AV’s disregard to the GUA-MIA market and launch GUA-FLL.

China Airlines at Ontario? Is this a new thing for them? Are other Asian carriers doing this? While I applaud the eastern side of LA getting service, the head scratchers for me are connecting traffic and lack of attractions near Ontario. Then again, I have been out of that area for about 8 years and maybe lots of new business out that way.

It's a comparison of what AA loaded versus what it will fly, not what AA flew last year versus what it will fly this year. In reality there likely are very few AA cuts at all. AA has a bad habit of loading flying it never intends to fly.

WN service between CVG and PHX is only for baseball's spring training. It ends on Apr 7th.

Looks like a frequency cut, while upgaguging of aircraft. I didn't understand why they switched back to CRJ's to increase frequency. Nice to see the CR7's/9's back on the route.

It's unfortunate the amount of cuts DAY has seen, too bad the cuts continue. I don't see DL going much lower in DAY though, this is what's left:
MSP: 3xCRJ
DTW: 4xCRJ
ATL: 4xMD80

In comparison, from 2005:
ATL: 4xMD80, 2xCRJ
CVG: 2xCR7, 5xCRJ
DTW (NW): 3xCRJ
FLL: 1xERJ
MEM (NW): 2xCRJ
MSP (NW): 2xCRJ
MCO: 2xERJ
TPA: 1xERJ

DAY has suffered quite a bit from airline consolidation and CVG's prices falling. I am hoping G4 continues to expand/Spirit begins service.

It's not news, but I dodn't know it was coming at the expense of LAX, although I guess the slots in the bilateral are frozen...I was told it was "political". No idea what that really means.

I believe VRs lone 757 has finally bit the dust and icelandair is taking over the flying which forced the move back to BOS. They changed the days of flying (Monday from BOS and a Friday to BOS) and times (daytime flight) with 2 weeks notice, meaning they must have had a serious aircraft problem.

The market belongs to PVD (flights averaged 99% outbound last June) and hopefully it will be able to return one day, or someone else will fly it)

Thanks as always Enilria for making my Sunday morning. And thanks so much cvgComair for the informative post on DAY. I am there basically every week flying out for work. I have had a sense that LGA has been marginal for a while. I tried to use it to bring people in for work from New York, but for a while they weren't operating it Sunday night, which is the one night a week I needed to have clients on it to get them to DAY for Monday morning meetings.

I think the ongoing DAY cuts are due to the issues you name above, and also to the wider economic standing of DAY in the region. Although things are less bad than they were a decade ago, the larger regional cities (IND, CMH, CVG) have seen their fortunes rise much faster than DAY, and that has pushed the airlines to reallocate resources. And even more so, the coastal cities are booming when compared to the center of the country. DAY may not be doing any worse than it was a year ago, but wrestling CR7 or CR9 capacity away from the growing SEA, BOS, and NYC operations is difficult to do.

As someone who uses the DAY-MSP route constantly, I wonder what is going to happen as the CR2 fleet continues to shrink.

Bottom line is DAY is a fantastic place to fly out of. $4.95 a day parking where you can walk to the terminal in 5 mins, and a fantastic ground crew with relatively low turnover who is always immensely helpful when problems come up.

Interesting. I thought DL would've picked up KCVG-KPHX since they've flown charters for the Cincinnati Reds in the past (and, IINM, they might have a marketing partnership with the Reds), much like AS is flying KSFO-KPHX as part of their marketing partnership with the San Francisco Giants.

Ehh, I don't know if I'd call MSP weak. They're taking one weekly frequency away from MSP-MSY and cutting PHL, however they're adding MYR three times a week and SEA daily. So they're still up in net frequency, just reallocating some of the resources.

Additionally, I wonder about gate space at MSP. NK only has two gates in an already crowded E concourse

What 200 shrinkage? Delta scope clause is 125 hulls of 50 seat flying, and there are more than 125 CR2's in service between OO and 9E. Even after 9E parks the 16 they are supposed to remove this winter, there will still be at least 125 CR2's in service. There is no more planed reductions in 200's at this point.

Agree. A very well-thought-out answer. I agree Basic Economy is the bane of Spirit.

RE: Spirit. I think we are seeing NK move capacity out of domestic and into FLL-Latin in the last few moves. That's an interesting evolution.

I think DAY benefited majorly from the fortress DL built in CVG and now that WN is in CVG it puts DAY in the same sort of situation CAK and FNT are in.

They dropped it after the 2015 Spring season. I am kind of surprised it has not come back since then, Delta has increased its seats on CVG-DEN/LAS/SFO quite a bit. I do wonder if DL will jump back on it. For instance, F9/G4 started CVG-DEN and DL is responding by adding a MD-90 (up from a CR9). Likewise, G4/F9 started CVG-LAX and DL is adding 757's on the route again this Summer.

I think DTW will be added before 2 X daily to BOS and SEA are restored but you are right about LAX. Also remember that Michigan travelers are adding to the ORD numbers so when DTW is added there will be no need for the 380 at ORD. Expect DTW to be announced before the end of the year. DTW is very much on EK's radar whether those believe it or not.

Interesting to see AA move an LGA frequency over to JFK. That's now 6 daily total CLE-JFK (2x AA, 4x DL), just 2 years ago this was 3 daily (1x AA, 2x DL). Without any low cost presence, JFK has strangely seen one of the largest O&D increases from CLE. I'm surprised B6 didn't launch this when they started CLE a few years ago.

Interesting adds, but not unexpected.

One might think that AA responding to UA?

3rd DFW is a daily red-eye replacing last year's Monday only flight. Would appear that UA's red-eye to ORD has a challenger for the red-eye traffic.

The 5th to LAX comes after UA went to 4X on the route.

Side note - Interesting situation for red-eyes. The six jetways are all busy on peak nights, with 3X to GDL, 1 MLM, 1 ORD, 1 DFW. While there's another bridge to come at gate 8, that's supposedly for AS, so FAT's red-eye traffic looks to be max'd out for now on peak days.

I do wonder if DL will jump back on it. For instance, F9/G4 started CVG-DEN and DL is responding by adding a MD-90 (up from a CR9). Likewise, G4/F9 started CVG-LAX and DL is adding 757's on the route again this Summer.

I am surprised that it was WN that added the service and not one of the LCC's, because that seems like something they would've done.

While hardly significant, WN has also added Sunday only CLE-MSY service in March.

WN will be the 3rd LCC on this route, F9 has been operating it and G4 serves the market through IWA

Interesting stuff from AA this week

seems like some real adds at LAX by AA.

What is up with the desire to add more capacity on LAX-MCO? This has to be one of the lowest yielding transcon markets, yet continue to see additions by AA here.

I wonder where do the new management want to add flights to? Only seem to see cuts

kind of crazy to me that they are running FLL-LAX 3 daily through the winter season. Huge money looser since mint entered

Is hit supposed to be JetSuitex? I checked their website. It's still loaded until beginning of April and the frequencies haven't really changed. I would think this is a misfile. BUR-LAS is probably their most popular route.

I did some looking around - it looks like the summer schedule isn't out yet but I noticed that AS is on one of the daily SFO-BOS flights as well

where are you seeing this?
I see 1 A319 and 1 A320 until May and then 3 daily A320s after that on google flight. Same as it was before.

AA at JFK...this is slot useage.

They are obviously rearranging this hub and simply dont know what to do with the slots.

A few years ago, DL upped JFK PHL for same reason. At the time they were enforcing the useage requirements.

Obviously the Bos schedule has a lot to do with this...unless their is a rush to New England in sunny April

That VX cut of FLL-LAX hurts me a lot :brokenheart:

Good to see EK restoring daily service to FLL and MCO however!

When you mentioned the China cutbacks, were any of the HU flights from BOS or LAX cut back?
I check in alot of people for HU via BOS with connections to HU 482 and as well as their Shanghai route

I don't think they have cut those markets.

I believe they announced LAX-HNL.

Maybe, but BUR-OAK appears to be a new route?

They could lease them to B6.

That's big, although odd they would add both at once. Smarter to do one at a time?

AA PHL-LGA APR 3>6

Interesting move combined with starting PHL-JFK the same month. I don't know if it is solely slot squatting simply bc they are keeping the 190 on the route and one of the three frequencies added is a CR7 vs an ERD or CRJ. If they were just squatting, I'd expect all the flights to be <50 seats rather than having 2 flights with 2-class aircraft.

Hopefully DTW-DXB will come on line soon.

We need to see LAX, SEA, and BOS up to 2 daily again. Also ORD needs to see an A380 before DTW is even thought about. I however believe that Emirates will add DTW before ATL as ATL already has a Qatar 773.

DTW may be on EK's radar. But so are 5-6 other U.S. cities, maybe more. ff they do come to DTW, it mot certainly will not be on a Whalebus.

I'm glad to see it back in Boston, I think as long as Icelandair controls VR then PVD won't have it's flight there because I don't know any other airline that would be willing to start that route other than VR.

It's unfortunate the amount of cuts DAY has seen, too bad the cuts continue. I don't see DL going much lower in DAY though, this is what's left:
MSP: 3xCRJ
DTW: 4xCRJ
ATL: 4xMD80

In comparison, from 2005:
ATL: 4xMD80, 2xCRJ
CVG: 2xCR7, 5xCRJ
DTW (NW): 3xCRJ
FLL: 1xERJ
MEM (NW): 2xCRJ
MSP (NW): 2xCRJ
MCO: 2xERJ
TPA: 1xERJ

DAY has suffered quite a bit from airline consolidation and CVG's prices falling. I am hoping G4 continues to expand/Spirit begins service.

DAY's an excellent airport. I toured last April and we got an overview of their plans. Without going into the details of the extensive reconfiguration (I can if you want me to), there was talk from an airport official at that point that G4 was very happy at DAY and destinations 5 and 6 were a matter of time. The airport was meeting with G4 a few days after we visited, and their hope was for westbound service.

The Dayton Daily News at one point specifically mentioned DAY being in talks with B6 and NK; I don't think the former happens, but I could see NK coming in. NK operates at both CLE and CAK and I'd honestly think DAY has better odds than CVG at this point for another NK destination given the lack of competition. Truth be told, I'm slightly surprised CMH was announced first.

I dont know why everybody is shocked at NK expanding in Latam/Caribbean again. They always said the reason for the cuts was due to the construction in T4 and the logistical nightmare it entails (see B6).

Virtually all NK flights south are always full... so you will see more of that soon.

We’ve heard this for how many years?

ORD is lucky for DTW, or there would be no International flights!
