What is the current state of turboprop regional operating in the US? I'm aware that Alaska operates a fleet of Q400s, but beyond that I don't see any turboprops anywhere. Where (in the 48) could I go to see significant turboprop operations?

EWR has some turboprops doing regional runs as United Express if I'm not mistaken. Though I believe I saw a mention that they are being retired too.

AA still has Dash8s doing regional flying in CLT until June 2018.
Silver operates a fleet of Saab 340s and maybe ATR42s soon.
Great Lakes has B1900s
Boutique Air uses PC12s.
Cape Air has prop planes as well.

If you get a chance to travel to Alaska...there is such a variety of aircraft up here it's almost comical, to step off a beaver, board a 737 and deplane through airstairs and watch a dc-6 or c-46 freighter be unloaded. Makes a trip almost necessary for an avgeek.

* Southern Airways Express with Cessna 208 Caravans operating hubs at BWI, DFW, MEM, and PIT
* Air Choice with Caravans at ORD, MSP, and STL
* Mokulele with Caravans LAX-IPL
* Via Air with Embraer 120 Brasilia's at CLT
* Contour with Jetstream 31's BNA-TUP
* Public Charters/Texas Sky with a Jetstream 32 DFW to DRT and VCT and North Country Sky, MDW to MBL with a Jetstream 32.
I think that covers all of them left in the lower 48.

Horizon flies them to a bunch of cities from SEA and PDX, as well as between other cities in California, Nevada, Oregon, etc. Examples: Santa Rosa to SNA and LAX, SAN - MRY, SJC to EUG and RNO.
They're also flown by Canadian airlines to cities in the U.S.

Piedmont has 18 active Dash 8`s. I just saw two on FR24 at CLT. Use filters in FR24 to search on A/C type or airline.

PenAir still has Saab-340 operations in BOS and a PDX. Tradewind runs a PC-12 BOS-HPN and WestJet has Q400's at BOS as well. Cape Air (mentioned above) has always had a large Cessna 402 operation at BOS plus other hubs at BIL and STL. Boutique also has a couple Beech-350's at DEN and SLC. Great Lakes has Brasilia's at DEN too.

YTZ is pretty close to the lower 48 and from there you can get a Q400 to DTW, MDW, EWR, BOS, etc.
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

So for "significant operations", looks like BOS, CLT, STL, DEN, SEA, and PDX are your best bets. Cape Air in BIL has twice during the day where you'll catch five aircraft on the ground at once. Here in ABQ, Boutique has three PC-12's on the ground at 4pm each day ex Sat.

RE: Great Lakes Brasilia's currently serving DEN-SLN, I found this dated 12/21/2017 regarding Salina's re-bid efforts (which appears to be going to OO). I wonder what So. Cal. plans are for ZK's Brasilia's there ,per statement below.
The [Great Lakes] proposal lacks certainty and the airline has failed to describe how either option can meet community expectations. When questioned about the Option A for continued EMB-120 service, Salina was informed that [Great Lakes] intends to move EMB-120 operations to Southern California by March 2018. If this is the airline’s plan, then continued EMB-120 service at Salina is not an option that can be considered for an EAS subsidy contract scheduled to start on April 1, 2018.
