It has been a great year for Finnair and Helsinki, and also for Nordic aviation in general!

For 2018, HEL will have more frequencies on current routes to cities such as Bangkok, Delhi, Doha, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Barcelona, Pristina, San Francisco, Chicago and propably Beijing, compared to same periods in 2017. Also, new routes will be launched to Nanjing, Chengdu, Kunming, Lisbon, Stuttgart and propably to Hannover and Cologne. In addition, Tibet Airlines left an application to CAAC for a new service from Jinan to Helsinki.

How does the year 2018 look like for ARN, CPH, OSL and KEF?

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

If I'm not mistaken, construction of the new pier G at terminal 5 at ARN will start in 2018.

It had already started being replaced by CRJ-900 and A320neo, and partly by 737-700 already in the fleet

Neither are new. TAP already flies to HEL. AY last served LIS in 2011 and STR in 2012.

Yeah that's not going to happen.

Surely the most significant launch for 2018 we've heard so far is CX to CPH.

Yeah, I know. I forgot the TAP service to Lisbon as I only was thinking about "new" service to Lisbon operated by Finnair. And by saying it's a new service I meant that Finnair is relaunching the service and it wasn't served for last few years (by AY). The same with Stuttgart.

And, unless it has changed, the plan is that the last 737-600 will leave the fleet in 2019.

Wow! Very first A350-900 record has just been submitted as Finnair A350 reached the groundspeed of 1250 km/h (675kts) with a tailwind of 333 km/h (180kts).

Twitter

Also, A350 now operates on Finnair's HEL-HAV route.

Finnair experiencing good demand out of Australia

Helsinki-based Finnair’s Australian boss Geoff Stone says Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore are the most popular Asian gateways for local passengers heading to Europe.

Although Finnair does not serve this market with its own aircraft, the airline has codeshare arrangements with British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas, as well as interline agreements with Japan Airlines, to take passengers from Australia to Asia, where they transfer onto Finnair’s services to Helsinki and beyond.

And the range of destinations beyond Helsinki are many and varied, with Finnair serving some 100 cities in Europe as part of an expanding route network.

“Finnair is undergoing the fastest growth phase in our 94-year history with new aircraft, new routes and a strong focus on Asia,” Stone told reporters in Sydney in early December.

“This Northern Hemisphere winter we will have four new long-haul routes including Havana, Goa, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and Puerto Plata in the Domincan Republic.”

Stone, who finished up his six and a half year stint as Finnair’s Australian boss at the end of 2017 to take up a new role as chief operating officer of Australian Cruise Group, noted Finnair was the largest European carrier in Japan with 31 weekly frequencies to four cities.

Moreover, Finnair was also growing strongly in the China market, with nonstop flights between Helsinki and Nanjing due to start in 2018 meaning the airline would soon serve seven destinations in the country.

“This year sees us with 87 weekly flights to Asia and by next year we will have 97 weekly flights to Asia,” he said.

Finnair, a member of the oneworld airline marketing alliance, has been recognised as the best offline carrier at the Australian Federation of Travel Agents National Travel Industry Awards for the past five years.

“I would like to pay special tribute to a wonderful group of professionals and terrific people with whom I have been privileged to work with at Finnair in Australia over these last few years,” Stone said.

“They are absolutely dedicated to delivering the best possible service and outcomes for our clients and industry partners.

“Thank you also to so many of you in the Australian travel industry who have supported me over the years and continue to help us in maintaining Finnair’s strong reputation and bookings in the Australian marketplace.”

Interesting. I am happy that demand in Australia is growing. I don't think we'll going to see a Finnair (or Qantas) service to Australia, at least not within next few years, but I would be really glad if we will. I think there is a little possibility of Qantas launching a service to HEL (since QF is in Oneworld and a partner with AY, I think this is possible) from SIN as the airport will be like a little hub for the airline, or AY launching a service to Australia via BKK, SIN or HKG. As I wrote in the other thread, Australia is the largest market for Finnair that the airline does not serve with its own fleet.

But, unfortunately, I think this is unlikely.

Cathay Pacific expands Finnair codeshares in S18

Cathay Pacific in summer 2018 season is expanding codeshare partnership with Finnair, covering additional European sectors to/from Helsinki. Planned new codeshare routes as follow.

Cathay Pacific operated by Finnair
Helsinki – Brussels (eff 25MAR18)
Helsinki – Copenhagen (eff 02MAY18)

As of S18, CX will have several codeshare routes from HEL operated by Finnair. Will we also see Cathay Pacific operating to HEL in the future?

Norwegian reports highest ever passenger figures in 2017

PAX: over 33 million
LF: 87.5%
New routes: 54

Norwegian has reported its highest ever passenger figures in a single year, with more than 33 million passengers and a load factor of 87.5 percent[/b] in 2017. The launch of 54 new routes and a substantial increase of intercontinental traffic contributed considerably to the growth. The company took delivery of 32 brand new aircraft and launched 54 new routes, mainly between Europe and the US. The Group hired approximately 2,000 new staff members. The 2017 load factor was 87.5 per cent, compared to 87.7 per cent the previous year.

Norwegian chief executive, Bjørn Kjos, said: “The 2017 traffic figures show that our international footprint grows stronger, in line with the Norwegian Group’s strategy. “Our Scandinavian operation is stable and positive, and we see that our long-haul and short-haul networks complement each other, consequently strengthening our competitiveness. “Our growing long-haul networks from the UK and Ireland continue to be well-received by passengers, proving the demand for high-quality, affordable travel. Increased tourism creates economic value and new jobs at all the destinations we serve.”

December 2017 was also characterised by passenger growth and a solid load factor. Norwegian carried 2,402,005 passengers in December, up 12 per cent from the same month last year. Both the capacity growth and the traffic growth were 32 per cent. The load factor was 84.6 per cent, the same as December 2016. Kjos said: “December has been a busy travel month in all markets we serve.“ This winter, we once again offer flights between the U.S. East Coast and the French Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, enabling the company to achieve better fleet utilisation in low season in Europe.”

Norwegian operated 99.3 per cent of its scheduled flights in December, of which 68.2 per cent departed on time.

yes, I guess DY/D8 will use the same config, oddly Amadeus gives a lower count.

Must be some error in Amadeus, or you checking a flight with some blocked seats?

Anyway, after the traffic numbers, with a stop in the falling yield, the Norwegian share is up 10% at the stock exchange today

good for DY/D8, they are pretty innovative, they didn't blow SK out of the water and won't do it with other legacy's ones but they have their own originality. hopefully they continue operating and expand forever. (so we get lower fares)

An interview covering Changi Airport had this little sentence:

Are there any particular routes/geographies you are targeting?

In Europe, with Singapore having strong links with Norway across various sectors, CAG is pursuing opportunities to develop direct air links to the Scandinavian country.

If I'm not mistaken Norwegian has long been rumoured to open the connection but as SQ is probably quite unlikely, could Scoot also be a candidate?

Then for CS100 and CS300 it's 0 capacity, and CS100 is listed as TURB instead of JET.

Singapore is the main unserved destination from Norway, so I think OSL will get its long-awaited service to Singapore within next few years pretty surely. Norwegian or Scoot will probably launch the service with Boeing 787, but I'm not sure which one will be the airline launching the service.

By the way, I read some old news on CAPA and I saw these headlines:

Finnair sees India as a 'priority destination'
Finnair in talks with Kingfisher and American Airlines to increase passenger traffic to/from India

both were published in September 2011.

The first news says:
Finnair director Indian sub-continent Kari Stolbow stated India is a "priority destination" for the carrier, with plans to add more cities to the network. Key cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad are under consideration.
[...]

and the second one:
Finnair is in talks with Kingfisher and American Airlines to increase passenger traffic between India and Europe and North America. More destinations like Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad are on our radar." “We get good amount of traffic, particularly business travellers, in summer, but winter is a hard time for us on this route,” he said. The carrier also stated it ... has no objection with Kingfisher Airlines launching new services between India and Helsinki. "I cannot rule out Kingfisher connecting Helsinki with some of the major Indian cities...

Why did Finnair "fail" in India? Did the airline go to India too early?

India is again growing at HEL and Finnair but is there a possibility of Finnair expanding again in India with services to previously mentioned cities (Mumbai, Bangalore etc.) in cooperation with its partners such as AA (which does not operate to India at the moment). Goa is the latest addition and more frequencies to Delhi will be added this year. I think Finnair and Finavia want (or wanted) HEL to become a hub between North America and India as well, so could this happen in the future? AY has the Europe-Asia afternoon "wave" at HEL but could there also be North America-India wave at noon for example. Unfortunately, Kingfisher Airlines does not operate anymore and hasn't been inactive for many years due to bankruptcy.

The issue here is that the demand for business class between Norway and Singapore (and SQ's onward destinastions) is rather strong, and better than the other Scandinavian contries. This is a dilemma in this situation

Air China resumes Copenhagen service from late-May 2018

Air China in this week’s inventory update opened reservation for its planned service resumption on Beijing – Copenhagen route, set to commence on 30MAY18. The Star Alliance member will operate this route 4 times a week, on board Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

CA877 PEK0255 – 0645CPH 330 x246
CA878 CPH1315 – 0410+1PEK 330 x246

The airline previously planned to resume this route from June 2012, however service was cancelled prior to planned resumption.

As expected, Beijing Capital Airlines seems to have been replaced by Air China. Hopefully we won't see a re-run of 2012.

I’m hoping to see a launch of ARN-HND or NRT this year. Since SK already flies to NRT from CPH maybe a launch by ANA could be possible, or at least wishful. If I am not mistaken NH did launch BRU and DUS last year. So perhaps we could see ARN this year...

Let's see. It's actually funny that there are around 40 weekly flights from HEL to Japan and almost 700,000 passenger traveled between Japan and Finland last year, but ARN has 0 flights to Japan.

Difficulties at KEF this morning due to snow and poor braking conditions caused two Icelandair 767s to divert to Akureyri (AEY). They are still on the ground there. I don't remember AEY ever taking widebodies before. Let alone two at the same time.

How come business demand would be bigger from Oslo? Doesn't really make sense considering Stockholm and Copenhagen are significantly bigger cities and SQ already serve both destinations.

Shipping and oil is two key factors.

There was no official announcement about the new terminal / satellite terminal. However, something, of course, has to be done if HEL will have 30 million passengers per year in 2017.

Did Finavia target Helsinki Airport to have up to 30 million passengers in 2017? :o
In those days Finavia and Finnair wanted HEL to become a significant hub between North America and India.

AY HEL to MAN turned back this morning just after 10 mins. Last night SK ARN to VAA turned back after circling around VAA for some time, that might have been because of strong winds but I wonder what was wrong with AY.

OH-LZA was performing the AY1361 flight. It reached 9 000 ft then leveled and turned back. No idea of the reason. But is it the oldest A321's AY have? It's age according to flighradar24 is 18 years.

[EDIT] it left 10:54 local time and now at FL 360 west of Stockholm

It was a problem with cabin pressure.

If I'm not mistaken Norwegian has long been rumoured to open the connection but as SQ is probably quite unlikely, could Scoot also be a candidate?

Singapore is the main unserved destination from Norway, so I think OSL will get its long-awaited service to Singapore within next few years pretty surely. Norwegian or Scoot will probably launch the service with Boeing 787, but I'm not sure which one will be the airline launching the service.

The issue here is that the demand for business class between Norway and Singapore (and SQ's onward destinastions) is rather strong, and better than the other Scandinavian contries. This is a dilemma in this situation

How come business demand would be bigger from Oslo? Doesn't really make sense considering Stockholm and Copenhagen are significantly bigger cities and SQ already serve both destinations.

OSL does also have considerably more cargo than CPH and ARN. Even if it is easier to fill the economy class, the salmon in the belly will pay off compared to passengers.
