Delta flight forced to divert after bird enters cockpit

Detroit – It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a bird on a plane.

A Delta Air Lines flight captain decided to turn his plane around and return to Detroit after a bird was discovered inside the flight deck.
The airline says in a statement that shortly after takeoff Saturday, the pilots of Flight 1943 from Detroit to Atlanta saw a small bird in the flight deck. The unexpected passenger had entered the aircraft during boarding.
The captain decided to turn the plane around to “avoid a potential distraction” during the flight. The aircraft landed without incident and the bird was removed and set free.

Really strange incident. I gotta say though... that's a much quicker way at migrating south for the winter.

Does anyone remember now there was a flock of birds living inside the McNamera Terminal at DTW for the first few years after it opened. I think they've gotten all of the birds out of there by now.

No, they're definitely still there. I see them regularly, here is a pic of one of them. I'm pretty sure its intentional, and its fun to see them flying around as they mind their own business.

Yep, they nested in girders up above the tram so nobody could get to them without setting a ladder on the tramway (and thus it was only rarely done).

Even the birds can't stand DTW and prefer ATL.

Did the bird had a ticket? If not I can understand why the pilots returned.

The bird still had to make an ATL connection, lots don’t make it thru ATL’s subway.
