Ok thanks for the clarification! not sure why the airport was using that schematic in their RFP they just released last week. But given that press release from a while back dealing with the delay in opening they did say they would deliver 5 FIS capable gates with some of the new funds they acquired... which was unclear if they meant 5 fis ready to go gates or not. Seems smart to make it ready to go then wait til a future date.

Seating is being installed in Concourse C of the new terminal. Nice improvement with power ports and cup holders.

Finally we'll have nice seating at all gates. Big time upgrade over what's available at the current concourse C and many gates on B, in any case.

Sometimes its the little things that make a difference... i think the only thing with new airport that concerns me besides the actual off site traffic conditions is the departures drop off zone and the fact there doesnt seemed to be areas of the road that are covered and protected from the elements .. looks like they fixed this problem at the arrivals curbside

also has anyone seen plans for the new long term garage? if it follows the parcels dimensions will be a somewhat interesting layout then

btw the installation of things like this in December proves what we all suspected that the airport was behind and its wasnt just because of that sewer line... ultimately adding a whole terminal midway through construction and still completing on time was probably too ambitious.. rather them get it right and be delayed than anything else..

DL is getting a lot of MSY connecting traffic through Atlanta to RDU, JAX, etc. Any thoughts about nonstop service?

I'm sure DL is perfectly happy to continue connecting pax through ATL. WN used to fly BHM and JAX way back in the day, but JAX never returned after Katrina and BHM got cut a few years later. G4 also briefly flew JAX, but dropped the service. Annual load factor of 73.4% in 2016 when G4 flew the route. NK may be a possibility for JAX now that they fly from there. RDU has WN and G4 on the route now, so it seems like that is fairly well served from a leisure standpoint. Business travel pax likely prefer the multiple non-stop flight options flowing through ATL to RDU and vice versa.

If that many people are willing to fly those shorter routes through ATL just to save a couple of hours over driving, imagine how many more people would fly over driving if a nonstop service is offered at a reasonable price. This is a reason I hope 3M can get their act together with the ATRs and come to MSY. So many of their routes are very short drive-able intra-Florida routes, but MSY offers many more opportunities with better O&D and no competition that could easily fill a 46 seater: JAX, BHM, LIT, TUL, OKC, maybe DAB, TLH, HSV, GSP, and SHV (those might need help with codesharing connections). Considering the UA frequent flier base and UA/B6 connections I think they could do very well here.

As for DL, I'm surprised they've been so stagnant at MSY the past few years, but maybe we'll see more once the terminal move is complete. IIRC they'll be tight on jet bridges for a while during the switch. RDU, CVG, MEX, daily BOS/SEA and maybe even JAX/MCO would be good adds for them.

December Air Service Update
http://www.flymsy.com/Images/Interior/air_service/december%202018%20air%20service%20update.pdf

Notably October was up 8.4% year over year. 10.3% year to date. This was with a 2% increase in departures and 7% increase in seats, meaning that loadfactors and gauge are increasing.

December is only showing about 1 more flight and 956 more seats, so it's good that we have a lot of new capacity coming in the spring.

Just a question but does the months that Condor operates cannibalize some of the passengers that BA otherwise gets in the months its in operation and condor isnt?

Im definitely hopeful for Silver Airways to come and do well here and use as a sort of western base to funnel through to florida and vice versa

The DE flight likely takes some of the lower end traffic during the Summer away from the BA flight, but premium traffic is likely sticking with BA due to the greater frequency than the 2x weekly that DE offers. Both flights have managed to operate with decent loads during the peak Summer travel season, and that is good to see.

Combined TATL in June saw 13,304 seats offered and 11,369 passengers result in a load factor of 85.5%.

As for BA/DE to me it's hard to compare to other airports because LHR and FRA make up a smaller portion of the total European traffic at MSY compared to most other airports. Looking at that old chart from before BA launched, 16% of MSY's Europe traffic was going to London vs about 20% for Nashville, 21% for SJC, and 22% for AUS. FRA has also been relatively less important of an O&D market, while CDG and AMS have historically had a larger share compared to similar cities.

In my experience BA is usually pretty expensive for connections and a lot of them are just not well timed. DE connections are more reasonably priced, but I'd say more risky considering the frequency.

Well I remember them announcing BHM and PNS a few years ago. That was doomed with the pilot shortage and higher fuel prices. More recently the announced BKG service didn't happen because they weren't ready to operate the ATRs in time (although I suspect low demand had something to do with it as well). At any rate they are going to need to shift from shorter thinner markets once the larger and faster planes come in and MSY has plenty of 30-60 PDEW routes in the 250-550 mile range that would fit nicely.

Agreed that there are several routes that would support ATR type of service with 3M. Be nice if they actually started service here for once after announcing though. As mentioned, maybe the third time will be the charm.

I'm very intrigued by it. MSY PR is usually good at keeping announcements under wraps. They very rarely do these sort of teaser announcements, unless it is something big. In fact usually they are slow to post new service announcements after they've been made public.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's air service, but maybe an official announcement of the new lounges or something along those lines?

Frontier seems to be in the middle of loading a bunch of new stuff, so that's a possibility. They do like to hype new routes. Or maybe the long awaited AM announcement? I've been wondering whatever happened to MT's plans to serve MSY, assuming those tenant lists were accurate.

If 3M comes, it would a may take a while till they could offer a JAX service. They just pulled out of JAX when they canceled the TPA and MHH routes. I believe NK will take over their former slots. They have stated that they would like to resume operations at JAX in the future, but who knows.

I’m on the fence about the airport’s posting. It kind of comes across to me as simply something Christmas related. But msycajun is right in saying announcements regarding something new usually aren’t done unless it’s major. So, we’ll see. Would definitely be a let down if it’s sonething like free hot chocolate/coffee for passengers lol.

The airport did say they will be really ramping up advertisement about the new airport to the local community. We are nerds here and know all about it but most people shockingly dont understand just whats bwing built ... my guess is tomorrow could be the official unveiling of new ad campaign for new terminal to introduce to greater public

All family, men's, and women's restrooms in #TheNewMSY will have changing tables. Changing tables will also be available in Mother's Rooms throughout the terminal.

Follow up to the airport posting on facebook...they handed out gifts to a group of passengers on an arriving NK flight today. That was it.

Much ado about nothing.

Though I’m sure someone liked the MSY themed socks.

September 2018 domestic and June 2018 international load factors and passenger numbers by route finally calculated.

International load factor for all carriers in June was 79.7%. Passenger traffic grew by 17.3% and seat count grew by 21.7% resulting in a -3% decline in load factor. Vacation Express (owned by WG) was the main contributor to the decline in load factors as both the PUJ and CUN flights had very poor loads. The PUJ flight saw too much capacity added, and the CUN flight likely suffered from the addition of WN on the route. The CUN flight is not returning for next Summer, and is being replaced by service to MBJ. Hopefully, that flight will do much better.

June International route seat count(%change), pax count(%change), and load factor(change)

Airline............Seats.............................Pax..........................LF
AC................4,558(+3.3%)................3,646(-1.1%).........80.0%(-3.5%)
BA................9,440(+29.7%)..............7,861(+37.7%)......83.3%(+4.9%)
CM...............3,720(+10.2%)..............3,240(+12.1%)......87.1%(+1.5%)
DE................4,080(+0.3%)................3,644(+12.1%)......89.3%(+9.4%)
DL................1,554(+38.3%)..............1,271(+22.7%)......81.8%(-10.4%)
UA...............1,507(+22.8%)...............1,239(+22.2%)......82.2%(-0.4%)
WG..............3,488(+17.0%)...............1,687(-36.4%)......48.4%(-45.6)
WN...............1,430.............................1,145....................80.1%

On the domestic side, airport-wide seat count grew by 10.7% and pax traffic grew by 7.6% resulting in a -2.2% decline in load factors to 76.3%. WN's MSY-DEN route had the best loads of the month at 89.6%. NK's MSY-ACY route had the worst loads of the month at 53.7%. Year to date, the UA's MSY-DEN route had the best load factor at 91.8%, and NK's MSY-CMH had the worst load factor at 61.2%. Also, SY started flying to MSP and had a 62.2% load factor in the first weeks of flying.

September Domestic route seat count(% change), pax count(%change), and load factor(change):

Airline............Seats.............................Pax..........................LF
AS................19,179(+83.9%)...........15,164(+65.7%)......79.1%(-8.7%)
AA...............189,325(+6.0%)...........144,167(+0.5%).......76.2%(-4.2%)
B6................46,358(+12.8%)............33,548(+16.3%)......72.4%(+2.2%)
DL...............205,460(+2.3%)............159,894(-0.5%).......77.8%(-2.2%)
F9................34,208(+77.2%)............26,367(+62.2%)......77.1%(-7.2%)

SY..................2,460............................1,530.....................62.2%
UA..............152,980(+13.6%)..........119,280(+6.4%).......78.0%(-5.3%)
WN.............455,755(+4.6%)............341,870(+3.0%).......75.0%(-1.1%)

So BNA-LHR is being upgauged to a 789 next year. I thought MSY-LHR was due for a regularly scheduled 789 as well?

Wonder if they could pull a DE, and give us a "surprise" schedule increase later on as the season draws near?

personally I cant see BA increasing anything until moving to the new terminal.. condor isnt even starting until the new terminal opens so its a consideration for people at least

ALso I cant help but think that United will be increasing service substantially, otherwise why do a lounge?

United is adding several flights in April. They’ll be at 25/day, with 19 of those mainline. I’m sure some of the additions will be seasonal but they are clearly upping their game here.

Yeah 2019, will have the most substantial growth UA has had in a while, although partially offset by the reduction in IAH banks. I still think LAX is a big hole in their network and at some point YUL and FRA. Nearer term, I wouldn't be surprised to see further increases to DEN and IAD if the strategy of building those into larger connecting hubs kicks into high gear.

Comparatively DL is looking like a laggard at MSY, despite their fancy new lounge.

I highly doubt the new terminal has anything to do with whether or not BA increases or with Condor's start date. BA will increase if the demand is there and they have the supply. Condor probably found a later start date was more appropriate (look at how long it took to announce they were returning). The terminal move will occur overnight, it won't be *that* big of deal.

Er, why?

What difference would the north terminal make in the least, in terms of frequency?

Other than resuming CVG, I'm not sure what could realistically be expected of them:
they already fly to all of their hubs, offer international service, and serve all but two of their focus cities.... both of the latter (CVG, RDU) having LoCos currently offering the routes.

At least a daily SEA and BOS would be nice - they are technically hubs. They could also use a flagship international route or two...

Agree. Other than CVG and RDU, I can only see increased frequencies (and going year round?) on SEA and BOS. I just don’t see DL giving MSY the RDU treatment in adding point to point flights.

I'd love nothing more than to see a nonstop to CDG (or to a lesser extent, AMS)... and prior to the announcement of BNA going daily/4class, I was somewhat holding my breath for it.

Now, not so much.

UK CAA November stats are out. https://www.caa.co.uk/uploadedFiles/CAA/Content/Standard_Content/Data_and_analysis/Datasets/Airport_stats/Airport_data_2018_11/Table_12_2_Domestic_Air_Pax_Traffic_Route_Analysis.pdf

The BA flight had 3.4% pax growth to 7,506 pax. Estimated load factor was 79.7% for the month on 44 flights total using the 788 seat count. Last year, the estimated load factor was 80.7% on 42 flights total. Overall, the route held steady on a year over year basis in terms of demand.

For those curious, here's how the other 788/789 routes performed in November.

BWI had 4.7% pax growth to 10,458 pax and an estimated load factor of 81.5%
SJC had 13.6% pax growth to 9,416 pax and an estimated load factor of 72.7%
BNA had 5,190 pax and an estimated load factor of 71.3%

Well, scratch "international" off that list... they just dropped CUN.

Not really surprising though. :(
