That's an interesting development.

Last year there was some news about them talking to both Airbus and Boeing about "possibilities" to grow their long haul fleet faster, but that didn't result in an order announcement.
https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/eco ... val-cathay

But the lack of an announcement might have just been the economic tensions between the US and China. Chinese airlines clearly have not walked away from the Boeing 787. I wouldn't be surprised if we will see some more new Chinese deals in the next couple of months now the both governments are talking again to ease the issues.

The original MoU for the large Hainan order from 2011 was also supposed to go to Hong Kong Airlines. They went all Airbus instead with the 787 order being firmed up for Hainan Airlines instead. So you could see this as another example of an airline that was supposed to get the 787, then not but to order it anyway on a later date. Just like China Eastern and El Al for example.

The rumours in Hong Kong are that because of all the financial issues, the 787s would not be coming anymore. They even paid their staff late a couple of months ago citing financial issues and delays in funding. Their A350 deliveries have started again after skipping two frames that apparently financing is delaying.

Great pics by the way, really like the Etihad livery on all of their aircraft.

The landing gear doors are sequenced if the gear is not fully down and locked the doors will stay open until they are or if they're selected up the doors will stay open until the Gear is up and locked. The picture was caught with the gear in transition,

True, but if you do an alternate gear drop the same things occur, doors stay open and gear pitches the wrong way.

False IMHO, the picture shows an airplane that has done an alternate gear drop. It's too low to the ground to be dropping the gear, the nose is not pitched up (you want a "positive rate" before gear retraction), it's at the place in the flight where alternate gear is checked (just prior to a go-around) and it did a go-around.

I think that Juneyao livery may be my favorite 787 livery to date. That red is just a marvelous color, and having it on the engines is worth (to me, maybe not to them) whatever tiny fuel efficiency penalty they pay as a result.

What airlines' 787 is that on the right with flower tail ? Looks nice and familiar but can't place it. Also, for some reason, the United livery always look good on the longer fuselage like 78J or 77W but less so on the shorter frames.

The plane was delivered to them way back on 5 November so they're a bit late with their ceremony, if indeed that's what it was.

This something UA does every now and again with new aircraft. A plane is ‘unofficially’ delivered, it goes though the whole induction process. Then it then goes to PAE where a plane load of UA employees have been wined and dined, plus private toured though the FAL. There is then a ceremony where the employees sign off on the delivery. Big signs, pictures galore, and gift bags for everyone. ( whether there is actual legal paperwork involved or its all just for show, I don’t know ) All troop on board and fly off... usually to ORD, but the last such gig for a 39Max came to IAH. This is a really nice thing UA does for employee morale.

With at least one of their 789's (the first one maybe?) they flew it straight from PAE to SEA and did a revenue flight to LAX

No.

Max 144. Whether it reaches that will depend on whether the Hainan's get handed over and also the El Al. The others should all go.

Still didn't have any engines last time it was seen. Even if it flew tomorrow it's extremely unlikely that it would deliver before the year end.
