Some DAL M88/90’s have incorporated LED aft wingtip strobes, logo and wing landing lights. They are brighter, last longer & less of a load on the AC electrical generation system. They can be replaced with standard M88/90 approved lightbulbs if LED’s are not available in stock. That explains why sonetimes one side is standard & the other is LED. Changed my good share of these bulbs on these birds daily. Hope this helps.

Too early for that information. The MD-88s won't be retired necessarily out of age, but by how close their next HMV is.

As far as routes... again, it is too early. But I would assume anything about an hour's flying time from ATL.

I've noticed the same on a few 717s too.


They're showing up on CRJ series too. Saw an OO RJ7 in DTW yesterday with LED lights.

No. But 50-60 will be around for the turn of the decade. And beginning next year, DL will keep their flying to around 500 miles from ATL, DTW.

I'm with you...I love my t-tailed rides on the 717, MD-88, and MD-90 (technically the 717 will always be the MD-95 to me). I do have a laptop, so I can stream movies on those birds also, but the big thing for me is that they just ride so smoothly. Granted, some are starting to show their age, even after refurb (flew N940DN PHL-MSP over Labor Day weekend which was great, but N910DN DTW-PHL return which was filthy), but on the whole, they are a testament to how committed DL is to keeping even older birds in great shape. I'll be sad to see them go.

I should not complain I would take an MD-88 or other T tail any day over a RJ. But something about flying the newer jets I enjoy a bit more. I find the Airbus to be more spacious and the 737's are just a fine ride. I really like having the screen (im a map geek so love to match what we are flying over on the ground and confirm it from the animated map on the screen)

What is the retirement schedule looking like going forward for the MD-88? It seems like 1 is leaving the fleet approx once a week.

Does anyone have any intel on what the plan is for ATL-EWR flights as the MD-88's are removed? I would love to see that route go all A320 or even A321? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That's a route that sees some 717s today. They need frequency in a relatively short-haul business market. It won't be upgauged to all 321 -- no way.

The next B772 to enter mods at SIN is #7005 N864DA, and is currently ferrying from HNL>SIN. This will be the second ER (7HD) to be modded, with the first LR (7HB), #7106 N706DN, currently in mods also.

What's the plan with the 3 remaining 73As? I'm pretty sure delta.com shows seatback IFE available for every 738 flight, so are we sure there are still 3 floating around without AVOD?

I know 5653 and one more ship (I can't remember which) will get stored sometime in the next few weeks in TPA. I'm assuming this is for engine savings as these motors must be PBTH.
A couple of 764s and 717s will also get parked in the coming weeks.

I'm sure A.net will have a freak-out when these types of aircraft get parked but something that's not uncommon. I remember when everyone freaked-out several years ago when they put 2 A330s into storage for the winter.

When capacity is 20-30% lower during deep winter versus peak summer, it makes sense to put aircraft into storage, especially to deffer/delay maintenance related costs.

DL is storing aircraft in Florida? Are you sure about that? Climate-wise I can't think of a worse place to store airplanes in the U.S.

Yep. They are parking prior to checks. 2 are going to TPA for storage prior to check at HAECO, and 6702 is parked at Cecil for its check at flight star. All of these checks will be done after the 1st of the year. Something like 160-170 days parked.

The 764s are going to ILN for storage/check IIRC.

Very odd, that would be the Red Sox flight number. I'm not even sure they meant to do that. I'm guessing they had the same crew fly the Sox to play the Yankees and then take plane down to VQQ and it just made it easier.

How many more A320s are remaining without PTVs? I'm seeing Delta advertise personal entertainment on 3 out of my 3 upcoming flights on A320s now.

Given seasonal demand swings, and since you already have flight crew vacation liability which picks up in the winter, it makes sense to save on PBTH or to park airplanes early awaiting checks. We already know that DL is going to shave a slight bit off of capacity growth, so there is going to be a bit more slack in a fleet that is already taking lots of new deliveries. Bottom line the economic case seems clear to me.

Coming from the poster who hates on DL whenever possible (why read and post on these threads if its just to bash DL?)...

Regardless, it apparently makes economic sense considering that DL has one of the strongest earnings (if not the strongest) in the domestic industry. Its managing capacity with fully paid of planes.

Delta's max change in ASM capacity peak quarter (3Q) to trough quarter (1Q) in 2017 was 21.2%. Imagine parking 21% of the mainline fleet of ~875 aircraft.

Does it make sense? Keep in mind DL is an outlier in this regard among the domestic airlines. You generally don't see the UAs, AAs, WNs do it, even though they also seasonally reduce capacity and have slack in their fleets.

I can make a strong case that the financial benefit from parking airplanes is slim to none. I cannot make a strong case for a significant benefit. I believe the bobblehead mentality of whatever the airlines does is smart is foolish thinking. That's what I see in this thread, and that's why I challenged it. I don't want to drag this too far off-topic from talking about DL's refurbishments, but there's some strange statements being made about where airplanes are being stored, and if it's a good idea.

Delay heavy checks on five airplanes into the next fiscal year and you've saved close to eight figures of cash right there. Seems like a solid case to me, especially when the reduction in ASMs is enough that you'll still have more slack in the fleet that remains operational.

Nice try, except you don't debate topics. You find any DL thread you can and bash DL without facts or with misconstrued facts - it is endlessly frustrating for those of us who actually want information or to have an informative discussion. Here, your argument is that it makes no economic sense to park planes in slow season. You talk about making a strong case that the financial benefit from parking planes is "slim to none" - yet have not done so (the fact that you apparently always know better than DL is laughable).

3274 should ferry to SAL tomorrow. That will leave 6 320s in service without AVOD.

Had the pleasure of flying on two DL 757's this past weekend...695DL RSW-ATL, and 6701 DTW-RSW. Both were in impeccable condition. An added plus was a MD88 ATL-BUF and a 717 BUF-DTW. The ability to fly on those three aircraft types with regularity is the reason I prefer Delta when I travel.

But that's a narrow scenario that can be avoided with good planning. And until that scenario happens, the overall financial impact is minimal. It may even be negative. I believe that's why DL is an outlier among the domestic airlines. Being an outlier is often not a good thing.

You find any DL thread you can and bash DL without facts or with misconstrued facts - it is endlessly frustrating for those of us who actually want information or to have an informative discussion. Here, your argument is that it makes no economic sense to park planes in slow season. You talk about making a strong case that the financial benefit from parking planes is "slim to none" - yet have not done so (the fact that you apparently always know better than DL is laughable).

You still want to debate me and not the topic. I think your frustration is that you don't like an alternative voice that will state inconvenient truths.


If there’s no positive financial impact then why is DL doing it?

3903 is doing test hops.
3063 was showing a delivery flight, but that is showing cancelled at the time of this post. Expect it to go to MCI soon.
