Northeast USA Winter Storm 1/4 Thread

Thu Jan 04, 2018 3:57 pm

FR24 showing almost no traffic around the three airports, have not seen that in many a year. Virgin VS26 seems to have made out around 10:30 but no one else. From the UK our news footage of the East coast looks bloody awful, can be no fun working the ramp in these conditions, how people even making it into work amazes me. Big  to those who were able to.

Looks like IAD is getting the brunt of the JFK diversions.

JAL6 circled near JFK for a while and now appears to be diverting to...ORD! That's a helluva diversion. Also a CX 773 is diverting to YYZ. If things don't change, they'll be a lot more widebody diversions as the afternoon TATL flights approach.

Edit: Corrected BUF to YYZ

CX is going to YYZ not BUF, so is KE. AR and LA went to IAD, JL and OZ to ORD. More to come for sure.

SWF has had A380 diversions before. Stewart can take any aircraft all the way up to the space shuttle. When Antonovs bring in oversized cargo to the New York area, they often use SWF

Guess they will leave them on the plane for a while then, wouldn't fancy using steps in this weather.

The problem is, they can barely see the taxiway from the cockpit. After landing the plane would be stuck on the runway, unless they want to taxi through the grass. Can't see any difference, both the taxiway and the grass are covered with snow.

SIA going to SWF and Norwegian into ALB is piss poor planning by the airlines and/or incompetent captains. During a major snow storm, you want to divert to an airport that can handle both the aircraft and the people especially if the flight crew times out waiting for the weather to clear. SWF and ALB are alternates you would use if the weather was good or only a fuel and go diversion. On a day like today with snow removal, high winds, and low visibility, you want to go to a place like YYZ, ORD, IAD. JAL planned well to go to ORD because their connecting passengers can be accommodated on flights out of ORD and the NYC local passengers have a wider range of hotels to choose from. Add in the ORD has much better customs availability.

If SIA cant get out of SWF, it will be a nightmare for those passengers and crew customs and hotel/transport wise. Likewise for Norwegian at ALB. SWF/ALB dont regularly process widebody international flights customs wise and ramp wise too. Poor choices in diversion points on a day like this.

anything above 25 knots is not good for autoland cat III, so it's not only a problem of taxi after landing. then if no planes are departing difficult to accept many more arriving planes, I guess with the weather forecast in hand airlines plan logical diverison airports, in most cases, if possible another company destination, things are usually smoother if that's the case.

Surprised why Norwegian didn't divert to Stewart instead of Albany. After all, Stewart is an airport that is regularly served by Norwegian. Albany isn't. At Stewart they got the staff to take care of the passengers and if I'm not mistaken Stewart does have the equipment to unload containered luggage which is not the case in Albany. As soon as the weather clears, the passengers could be bussed from Stewart to New York.

its definitely the kind of day to just throw in the towel and try again tomorrow. Looks like were approaching near 80% cxld today at PHL/EWR/JFK/LGA & BOS so now if the passengers can just understand that, and find accommodations all is well

From the article: http://www.timesunion.com/business/arti ... o-14790209

"Airport spokesman Doug Myers said the state of emergency in New York City ruled out plans to bus the passengers there."

"The crew operating the aircraft had "timed out" by mid-day Thursday, and a replacement crew wasn't immediately available. The plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner with an oversize portrait of the late Danish-American comedian and pianist Victor Borge on its tailfin, was to spend the night at Albany."

"Passengers who checked their baggage will have to wait until the plane arrives at JFK. Luggage aboard the wide-body 787 is placed in containers that are then loaded into the jet's belly. Albany doesn't have the equipment to unload those containers."

In other words, the pax are screwed.

I agree Albany and Stewart are not good places for a widebody diversion. IAD, BWI, PHL, PIT, DTW, CLE, CVG, ORD etc can actually process the passengers and unload a widebody. Weather at SWF is horrible right now and there aren’t large hotels around there. There are only some smaller hotels and Newburgh is not somewhere anyone wants to ever go to.

SWF is close enough to get to New York City, but roads are in bad shape.

I saw a tweet earlier that the passengers from some of widebodies divertiing to IAD would be 'bussed' to NYC. Not sure if that was accurate, but if SQ winds up needing to bus to NYC, SWF sure is a lot closer than IAD.

It looks like AA95 (MAD-JFK) will be forced to divert for the 2nd time today.
1st they diverted to YQX (Gander) probably for refueling due very strong headwinds over the North Atlantic.
And the YQX-JFK flight will now divert to ORD according to FR24.

Another thing with DTW and ATL getting DL or even LH flights is the ability to go on to other DL or UA destinations. If LH is going into JFK and diverting to DTW they can be re booked via UA to get to ORD, IAH, DEN or SFO. DL flights would be processed and sent out via DTW or ATL.

One would think to divert to BWI, it has plenty of gates (though not workers). Bus everyone to the BWI Airport train station and call Amtrak to tack on a couple Amfleet cars to end of one of the Regionals and let your pax ride in better comfort to the NYC area. Surely be safer than trying to bus them to NYC.

I saw a tweet from a reporter in DC (at 1 EST) that said BWI is not accepting anymore diverted planes. They have to divert to IAD.

The snow is also affecting Amtrak. They are running reduced schedules. I would guess that they can't even accommodate all of their own passengers, let alone diverted passengers on airplanes as well.

Right now I've got a refundable B6 FLL-HPN and a WN FLL-BWI-BDL. WN is flying its LAS-BDL due in at 6:55pm

I don't have a good feeling about HPN today. There haven't been any arrivals at all today.
