fly.faa.gov now shows estimated reopening times (subject to further changes) of 8pm ET for JFK and 6pm ET for LGA.

The JFK diversions are quite likely going to have process immigrations where they landed. Not sure those planes are making it to JFK today.

watching the Spurs v West Ham game, half time they showed some video of Boston, after seeing that I have to wonder why airlines even tried to run flights into the area just to leave pax, crew and aircraft stranded.

The last long-haul flight to make it into JFK today so far was EVA Flight 30, which landed on time at 9:45 AM. These are the diversions of foreign airlines I am aware of so far:

DY7013: ALB
KE81, CX830, SN501, YU500: YYZ
D84900: BWI
EI105, EK201, EY101, LA532, SU100, TK3: IAD
LH410: DTW
JL6, KE249 (cargo), OS87, OZ222: ORD
LH400, VS3, VS137: ATL
SQ26: SWF

All flights from Central America to New York by foreign airlines were canceled,as did Air France and KLM (entire slate for the day).

En route to the closed JFK right now: AY5, CA981, CX840, LY7, TK1, CA981, MU587, and various BA flights.

Looks like SK 903 and SK 907 are diverting to IAD after missed approaches at EWR.

At Newark:

BA185 and SK903 made it in.

SK909 tried to land on Runway 4R but was forced to execute a missed approach. Right before that, SK907 also declared a missed 4R approach and diverted to IAD. I suspect SK909 will also head to IAD. EI101, which was following those two SAS planes, did not attempt the approach and is heading to IAD.

I agree Albany and Stewart are not good places for a widebody diversion. IAD, BWI, PHL, PIT, DTW, CLE, CVG, ORD etc can actually process the passengers and unload a widebody. Weather at SWF is horrible right now and there aren’t large hotels around there. There are only some smaller hotels and Newburgh is not somewhere anyone wants to ever go to.

SWF is close enough to get to New York City, but roads are in bad shape.

SWF would have been good for Norwegian, but not Singapore. I have to wonder why the SQ crew didn't tanker more fuel to divert to IAD or even ORD. The JL crew tankered a good deal more fuel to divert to ORD, as did LH and VS/DL to divert to ATL.

BTW, for Scandinavian...it was 903 that made it in (the Copehnagen arrival). SK907 and SK909 diverted after missed approaches.

As for QF11...it needs to be told to turn around and head to O'Hare.

SVA 21 JED-JFK diverting to YYZ

DL 173 LHR-JFK is diverting ATL

AAL 105 LHR-JFK is diverting RDU

Update

LH400 FRA-JFK is going to ATL. (A380)

IB6251 diverted to Chicago, another oneworld hub.

As for LY7 to EWR...not a good idea. The ideal runway because of winds, Runway 29, is out because of low visibility (an SK A333 and SK A343 diverted after missing the approach). That should be sent to YYZ.

I think that the snow intensity is even worse than expected - especially in the New York area. Delta preemptively cancelled almost everything at Logan yesterday, but they left JFK in tact assuming that they would try to operate. As they did that, the plan failed. I am in SFO right now. BOS cancelled yesterday. The 6am 757 to JFK remained scheduled and departed on time, but then diverted to MSP and cancelled. The 767-400 at 8am had a creeping delay as did the 757 at 11am, and then they both cancelled. By noon, the whole JFK operation had cancelled. My sister lives in PVD and she says that they have already had well over a foot, with the event being more snow centered and less on the extreme cold and wind.

ORD's up to 16 inbound pax diversions. Kinda disappointed QF went to DTW.

I'd say for a weather event, this was really planned out poorly. It's been a long time we've seen this many.

Looks like TAP207 OPO-EWR just tried to land at EWR and did a missed approach. Behind it are WOW from KEF and El Al from TLV that was originally destined for JFK.

Surely be safer than trying to bus them to NYC.

BWI isn't taking any diversions until further notice.

EC3 landed. Conditions must be extremely marginal if some captains are deciding against landing, while some are going for it.

I thought that JU500 would try for YUL, but it was too high.

Scratch that: KU117 and AZ604 diverted to YUL. No word on AZ608 yet. CA981 is still on track but will have to divert (EDIT: AC981 may try for Newark, since that's taking landings.)

MU587 is heading for Chicago, as is JL6.

That will complicate LGA and EWR even more as the winds will make it a single-runway operation (ILS 31, departures 31 for LGA, and 22L circle 29 for EWR). JFK at least will be using the 31s.

Nobody has really mentioned UA.

Not surprising given that it appears they cancelled every TATL into EWR today except a two LHR-EWR flights which diverted to ORD. UA 85 from TLV which headed to IAD. HKG diverted to ORD. PEK/PVG/DEL/GRU/EZE and everything else from Europe cancelled. BOM/TLV (UA 91) appear to be the only long hauls that made it in today, and they arrived around 4:30am this morning.

The strategy is argumentative, but UA firmly believes that rather than displacing folks/crews/aircraft in random diversion airports, proactively cancel and tries to rebuild tomorrow.

Interestingly, LH/SK/LX all tried to operate flights into EWR and all ended up all diverting to other airports.

RDU instead of CLT? Strange.

Just speculating, but RDU gets a 772. Does CLT and PHL get any? Maybe lack of equipment to ground handle?

The flight from Copenhagen made it in. The one to EWR isn't due in for about 3 hours (the JFK flights diverted though). Ethiopian just made it in as well, and Turkish is trying for Newark too.
