Hearing from a LGB employee that LGB airport JetBlue and Hawaiian will announce HNL service starting this summer in LGB.
If HNL is successful it will further expand to OGG and KOA with slots borrowed from JetBlue on a codeshare basis.
Hawaiian feels this A321NEO service will service the high end Orange County market that lacks direct service due to SNA runway restrictions.

About time someone did this!

With the JetBlue codeshare it will benefit both. I would assume starting with A321NEO service?

I would expect this to grow in number of islands and eventually HNL frequency.

Now to find the time to fly this...

Great news for LGB if this rumour turns out to be true.

JetBlue had to do something with those slots. It was a matter of time before they had to give some up. Better for them to give them up on a codeshare basis than lose them to WN.

So is B6 giving some of their LGB non-commuter slots to HA for this service?

This is a very clever move with wins on all sides. This provides some interesting one-stop options for AUS, SLC, RNO, BOS, and FLL depending on the timing of course.

If this is true, this is absolutely great news. As a Disney travel agent for Aulani, my guests would go crazy for this service. Another viable option outside of LAX and serve guests out of Orange County.

Wow! Color me surprised! These times go against the grain of most HA flights that RON on the west coast. Great schedule in my opinion for locals on both sides!

definitely a clever way for them to use up the slots that they obviously didn't want to use. Not sure if they can get JetSuiteX to come and use non-commuter slots.

Good for both airlines if they can make this work. A321NEO sure opens up a lot of doors.

Slightly OT, but what did HA use for west coast ops before the NEOs started coming in? Just the A330?

Anyway I can’t be super specific but in the coming months the jetblue strategy (if you can call it that) with LGB will be wait for it.....changing.

That what I was thinking but it will feed connections in both LGB for JetBlue and other islands for Hawaiian in HNL.
This will be a great alternative to LAX for the high dollar Orange County passengers.
I expect Hawaiian could easily spin this has New Orange County Hawaii service via convenient hassle free LGB airport.

I wonder if this will strike a fire for United to bring back SNA-HNL service.
The economy was in the toilet when they decided to Axe it last time.
Now Orange County having a record booming economy.

Well, its a safe bet the weekly OAG thread is probably one of the most regularly read posts on this website, or of any aviation/airline related site. Airlines pay a LOT of money to monitor/analyze airline schedules.

Those posted timings are rather useless for B6 connections @ LGB.

Only early AM B6 inbounds to LGB prior to a HA 0930 dep are flights from OAK, SFO and SJC, all of which have their own HA service.

I don’t think this flight has anything to do with connections to B6 flights. The LA-Hawaii market is huge. People would love an alternative to LAX, especially one as simple and easy as LGB. HA snags lots of business from the Orange County market by establishing itself @ LGB, halfway to LAX. If service extends beyond this single HNL trip, they may attempt to integrate flight times to better align with B6, but I don’t see that as being the angle right now. Fantastic move by HA!!

Yes. SNA, BUR, and ONT have had Hawaii service before, but not LGB.

The red-eye return leaves plenty of options for onward connections, but may not be as desirable for the local market.

This is so exciting, kinda getting bored of seeing JBU all the time, I am excited if this is true! I hope the 767s come back since we haven't had them as civil aircraft since continental.. and rich international once wanted to do this flight? The L-1011 is my favorite aircraft, that's disappointing. Oh well, hope this actually is true!

It’s not. You’re neglecting to account for the fact that by June, Daylight Saving Time will be in effect in California, but Hawaii doesn’t observe it. So adjusting the times to Pacific Daylight time, we get:

HNL-LGB: 0230-0800, 5:30 hours eastbound
LGB-HNL: 0930-1540, 6:10 hours westbound

But my assumption about the LGB codeshare is that it is mostly for tapping the B6 FF base, and that connections are an afterthought. If I am wrong, I'm sure the westbound flight will be retimed soon.

I didn't think B6 could pick and choose who would get their slots go if they weren't to use them. I thought they would have to be returned to the airport and airlines then submitting applications for them...unless this already happened.

Not a fan of the schedule but I am also aware of the slot issues in LGB. While I am not interested in the redeye, it might be a nice inaugural to do from LGB to HNL. 9:30am is a good departure time.

Agreed that given the flight times, it appears to be geared to the local market, which presumably includes a not insignificant amount of B6 FF's.

B6 could also, in theory, re-time its flights from SLC, RNO, FLL, and AUS to take advantage of connection opportunities.

That's what I thought too, but I guess there's a way around it. I can't see B6 returning a slot to the general pool with the "hope" that it doesn't land in WN's or DL's hands in the lottery.

There is so much demand in so cal to HNL, I do think this will be a success.

B6 might adjust LGB but what good airline doesn't adjust it's offerings. People have been anti lgb b6 for so long now, they are not leaving the focus city. B6s biggest issue right now is southwests new interest in the place. Some adjust was and will still be needed.

It doesn’t need to be timed for connections if the intent is to capture local B6 frequent fliers.

LGB slots cannot be traded between carriers under any circumstances. That is simply not allowed. They can be used on a temporary basis if a carrier isn’t using their full allocation and another carrier is interested in utilizing them 6-months at a time. That’s how WN added LAS & DEN last year. B6 returned a slot to the airport and Hawaiian was already at the top of the waitlist to receive slots if/when available, so they’d have been the first to be offered said slot(s). That’s how it happened. So it was definitely a “collaboration” between B6 & HA but not in the way which was suggested earlier in the thread. Brilliant move by HA to swoop into LGB!! This service will be wildly successful.
