Miracle on the Hudson, 9 years ago today

Mon Jan 15, 2018 5:44 pm

Nine years ago today, a routine flight turned into a life-changing moment for 155 people. While I reflect today on #Flight1549, I am continuously inspired by how crew, passengers, rescuers and first responders rose to the occasion to save every life. Photo via @CNN

Can’t believe it’s been 9 years, feels like just yesterday.

It's a reminder that even in our electronic age, it can be important to know how to fly an aircraft.

I'll never forget that day. My grandmother had died a couple days earlier, and we were returning home from her wake. I was sitting in the back seat of our car when I received the news alert that a plane had crashed into the Hudson, and thought, how much worse could this day get. Then I read that 155 people survived a few minutes later, and it instantly turned my day around. On a day that I desperately needed something to cheer about, Sully provided.

I happened to be there for that live and in person. It was the most surreal thing I’ve seen in 20+ years of working on the water. I remember racing up the river expecting a disaster and telling my crew to be prepared for the worst case scenario and boom-miracle. After the dust settled, I even got to go down and fly the pmUS A320 sim with some of Sully’s colleagues. What a time that was!

I remember when it happened...I thought it was just some small aircraft that had gone down. When I learned it was an Airbus plane with no loss of life, I was surprised (given that there had never before been a successful ditching of an aircraft of mainline size). The bird strike was about over the Bronx Zoo.

Yes I was indeed it and was quite the day-it otherwise would’ve been a very very boring and mundane day (which in the scheme of things is generally good!)

Here’s a few YouTube videos of the simulator flight. I was a “high time” A320 Flight Sim pilot going into the sim. (Also-if you’re interested, my channel also has more aviation videos from trips I’ve taken as well as some video game and union stuff)

Sully graciously signed my book when he came back to visit a year later.

My Dad had a full work week that required him to work the first part of the week in New York and the second half in Charlotte so his routing was PIT-LGA-CLT-PIT. The LGA-CLT routing was indeed supposed to be on US1549. Fortunately for him when he got to New York, the back half of his trip to Charlotte got cancelled at the last minute and rebooked on LGA-PIT to work the rest of the week at home. He had a whole bunch of friends and colleagues he knew that he was supposed to fly with on board US1549.
