RNO-SEA/PDX

Wed Jan 17, 2018 5:10 pm

As some are aware, Southwest used to fly these two routes, but now AS/QX has a monopoly. Any thoughts on whether Southwest might consider restarting?

AS is finally moving to E175 on SEA-RNO May 20, so it won't be quite as ripe a route for picking as it has been with the Q400. PDX-RNO staying Q400 for now.

DL also now has a hub in SEA, and DL could add SEA-RNO nonstop service with the DL hub at SEA, with DL already at RNO with nonstop service to its SLC hub and seasonal nonstop service to its ATL and SLC hubs, with DL still expanding at SEA, and with Seattle-area customers who prefer to fly on DL over AS or WN.

On the other hand, WN could further expand at PDX since none of the big 3 legacy carriers have a hub at PDX and since PDX is the largest WN station in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, there are some AS destinations that have nonstop service to SEA on more than AS but that have nonstop service to PDX on only AS. Southwest could bring back PDX-RNO nonstop service, and in addition to that, Southwest could also bring back PDX-SLC nonstop service and add nonstop service from PDX to HNL, MSY, MKE, IND, CMH, PIT, BNA, ATL, MCO, and TPA.

If they made money Southwest never would have pulled out... so no, I don't see them re-starting the route.

Fortunately market dynamics don't stay static for all of time. There would be a lot less to talk about on this site if that were the case.

I find it interesting that Southwest restarted RNO-OAK/SJC. I wonder if they wanted a better link for their passengers that wanted to go RNO-OAK-GEG, or RNO-SJC-SEA. I know there's probably some local traffic wanting to visit Reno from the Bay, but I think it's also valuable for making connections that are only available via OAK. SJC to a lesser extent, because they don't nearly have as large of an operation there compared to Oakland.
I call the dusty desert my home. :)

Whatever happened to all of the old Reno Air service? Did.AA go back to just flying to the hubs?

Just like every other merger AA has been a part of, after they digested the remnants of the carcass it all went towards the existing bulk of the airline.

I hate this. Just do away with competitors.
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

Reno is a tough market for air travel. SEA/PDX frequencies on QX are limited and on crappy aircraft. I've also traveled there from the Bay Area and fares/options are ridiculous (UA flights operated by SkyWest that cost $500-600 r/t, or the 1-daily frequency on QX out of SJC that leaves at like 10pm).

I know that the Reno market has declined with the growth in Vegas and Indian casinos in nearby states, but I'm shocked that service is so poor given the proximity to Tahoe and the growing tech sector in the area.

WN prices to OAK/SJC are generally pretty reasonable

I haven't been to RNO in a few years but downtown was a pretty sad place. Shuttered businesses and a lot of down-and-out people. Vegas has so overshadowed RNO as a gaming destination that it just doesn't warrant the service it used to receive.

Reno just isn't the spot it used to be for people from the NW. It used to be $100.00 was r/t air & a night at some dumpy casino p.p.d.o. back in the 80's. Great American used to fly this for some casino on DC-9's, but OC, QQ, PS, UA were all players in the market.

There used to be dental conventions every year in Reno, my Dad went every year, went to two classes & played golf the rest of the weekend, it was where folks went. Now Las Vegas draws a lot more people, with the massive shows, casinos, themed hotels & parks, it beats Reno hands down & a 30 minute longer flight.

That is why AS dominates with a couple Q-400's a day from PDX.

All of the old Reno Air routes are gone, except for the ones that make sense in the current AA (RNO-ORD, RNO/SJC-LAX, etc.)

RNO-SJC? ORD and LAX make sense but not SJC.

However, AS/QX flies RNO-SJC.

I think LAS is an awful place too. Not my thing.

RNO and LAS are great places to fly to for one reason - to get out of town as quickly as possibly and get to the excellent outdoors places in the surrounding area. Boat RNO and LAS are surrounded by some great places.

PDX-RNO-PDX is not staying a Q400 for now. That is incorrect. Since approximately 01-03-18 AS3425 RNO-PDX has been operated by an E175. I'm uncertain as to how long this will continue but certainly nice to see a change up in the equipment. The remaining daily flights are still operated by the Q400.

There's a little place about 40min from RNO called Lake Tahoe which a lot of people really enjoy. RNO even recognized this years ago and added Tahoe to the Airport's name. A fair amount of passenger traffic there is generated by Lake Tahoe residents & visitors.

Deltas growth in Seattle has come at the expense of Southwest. Both Southwest and United have shrunk their presence since DL came in and started adding routes and was willing to sacrifice yields to gain market share. I assume RNO-SEA was a casualty of the cuts. It makes sense to me that Southwest would not want to be in a dogfight for SEA based O/D with AS or DL. DL might not be competing on this specific route, but for connections, they hurt yields across the board.

SWA can kick rocks, they moved in & others abandoned Reno. Since, SWA has shuttered many NW routes & airports suffer.

Other comment, I’d much rather fly a Q400 on shorter stage lengths with AS/QX then Skywest. Not much time lost gate to gate & superior inflight product.

I do wish as back in the days of QQ, somebody would realize the potential of the Reno/Tahoe market. Remember when QQ grew the market enough to sustain a TVLLAX route? Awesome to observe the MD87/MD80 descend over the lake.
