AA to begin DFW/CLT to SBN and ECP. ORD-LGA Shuttle

Thu Jan 18, 2018 3:13 pm

I couldn't find a link publicly, and a search turned up nothing, but word is AA has announced internally on its employee site new routes beginning June 7 including adding new service to SBN and ECP.

DFW-SBN
DFW-ECP
CLT-SBN
CLT-ECP
PHL-FWA
PHL-OKC
PHL-PNS
ORD-AVP

For Sale starting January 22nd

AA has also announced ORD-LGA will become an hourly 738 operated Shuttle-branded route, beginning April 4, adding the branding/service over from the DCA/LGA/BOS shuttle flights.

Sound additions from AA. Seems like they're commited to connecting CLT with the Midwest

Equipment? Frequencies?

I hope FWA-PHL sticks around this time around, but I wonder if it will be timed a la UA FWA-EWR at 1x or like they did last time at 2x. And AA's return to SBN has been a long time coming - I expect them to do well.

Anyone know if there plans at LGA to create a row of gates dedicated to AA Shuttle?

Awesome! I'm especially excited about the LGA-ORD shuttle. Glad to see AA connecting the dots and adding more cities to the map.

Will AA ever add DFW-BUR nonstop service? AA will have nonstop service from DFW to all of the destinations other than BUR and MDW that WN serves nonstop from DAL after AA starts DFW-ECP nonstop service.

IIRC AA had hourly service LGA-ORD way before UA.

I did not realize it, but it looks like LGA-ORD-LGA is already pretty much a shuttle operation with virtually all 738's and hourly service, save for 1 or 2 two hour gaps. So this is more of a service enhancement than a schedule enhancement.

AA left South Bend in 2003. Happy to see they are returning. Thank You to Director of Air Service Development Julie Curtis and Airport Manager Mike Daigle's 6 yrs of leg work to convince them to come back. Notre Dame and companies like Warsaw's Zimmer Biomet fly lots of people to DFW and Austin every day. American has a large contingent of Platinum and Executive Platinum Elite flyers that live in Michiana.

A huge contingent of Notre Dame Alumni that live in Dallas. I'll guarantee that during Football weekends they will have to fly mainline B737-800 flights to SBN from DFW.

The 52 total is a culmination of announcements from AA over the past ~6 months going back to the TA announcements in late summer I think it was. So many of these we've known about.

Correct, also DL flies this route as a shuttle service with the E175s. If you combine JFK/LGA/EWR--MDW/ORD that's a lot of capacity !
Would that be the busiest route between 2 cities?

I counted 80 RTs today between NYC and CHI. SYD-MEL has ~90 RTs (I counted 85 RTs b/t SYD and MEL and 6 between SYD and AVA) and so does SAO-RIO (Not counting VCP. If you count VCP that's another 15 flights to GIG or SDU from there).

Of course, if you want to count all the NorCal airports to SoCal airports, it would beat all 3 above easily.

As far as the "shuttle" service goes - it had been rumored for awhile anyway when people were speculating how "Shuttle" service is done after DL's end their West Coast "Shuttles" (That doesn't even have hourly frequency outside of LAX-SFO). And as someone else already mentioned, AA already ran hourly (for the most part) flights between LGA and ORD, all on 738, anyway.

While I'm a DL flyer, as a SBN resident and ND alumni and employee I'm happy to see AA coming back. It's a good addition to our airport which only has DL, UA and Allegiant at the moment.

PHL-PNS is a bit surprising as it overflies CLT and DCA. DCA-PNS was only added back last year and is supposed to go 2x daily in April.

AA's strategy in regard to PNS is quite different from DL. DL seems to prefer just to use a lot of mainline metal and send everyone to ATL. AA seems to want to split the market across many hubs with smaller aircraft...some mainline and large RJ.

There's actually quite a few overflights of CLT in these adds: ORD/DFW-MYR, ORD-CHS, ORD/DFW-ILM. All interesting.

I believe that DL also has a Shuttle flight LGA-ORD, in addition to LGA-BOS and LGA-DCA. But the difference is most passengers, if not all, flying DL on that route do not have a connecting flight. So it is understandable that DL flies smaller aircraft, the E170/175, since they don't need as much capacity as AA does. AA flies larger equipment, the 738, hourly because they need a lot of capacity. A lot of passengers on AA are connecting to other destinations, or coming from other places.

I find it interesting that one who buys a Y ticket to fly LGA-ORD and then connecting to another domestic destination will get free wine and/or beer on the first leg but not on the second leg.

FWIW Delta is adding a few 717 turns to LGA-ORD.

Now that they are all over in C/D i think it safe to expect Delta to start allowing connections to and from the shuttle from other cities.

I'd count CLT as an east coast link...but this makes it much easier for another NE connection, and maybe some fare competition to UA's 1x daily EWR and IAD runs.

Still waiting on WN to deliver on the long-promised DCA n/s... :(

Just a quick data pull of average departures for 2017 full year:

Chicago-New York City: 75 RT's per day
Sydney-Melbourne: 83 RT's per day
Rio De Janiero-Sao Paulo: 103 RTs per day
Seoul-Jeju: 112 RT's per day
LA Basin-Bay Area: 196 RT's per day

There are many more hub-spoke gaps that AA can fill before they start worrying about "focus cities" and what not. Some may praise DL for their "focus city" strategy and I hope it works for them, but AA+US offers many hub routes yet to be launched.

US did not fly CLTPFN until 2006, it was served via TPA and MCO starting in 1993 until that time.

That would be resume, not add. AA flew BUR-DFW for many years. They dropped it a few years ago.

AA had dropped:

OAK-DFW
BUR-DFW
BFL-DFW
LGB-DFW

They just resumed OAK-DFW, so perhaps they will also resume the others from DFW.

For SBN service, looks like 2x CR7 service to both CLT/DFW to start.
Same for ECP.

One of them would be connecting the big pool of population and business in Southern New England to DFW via PVD

USAir Express carrier CCAir first launched CLT-PFN nonstop with Dash 8 aircraft in the Spring of 1993. It started by another Express carrier on those intra-Florida routes before 1993.

I second the above comment regarding PVD-DFW. It has to be creeping up the DFW not yet served list.

The article indices gates close to security in LGA - ORD. Any speculation on which gates. At ORD the only close 737 gate is K1. At LGA I could see them dedicating the gates in concourse A only problem is there is no access to the Admirals Club.

All interesting.
. Given the choice, wouldn't everyone want to overfly Charlotte? Kind of a dumpy airport. Least favorite AA hub.

Would that be the busiest route between 2 cities?

Seoul (GMP) to Jeju (CJU) typically has over 100 flights/day with many on widebodies and none on RJ's.

I have a 1993 schedule that shows CLTPFN, but it looks like it was dropped by 1994. Good catch. Don't recall seeing the route prior to 2006, but knew PFN was served by US Airways Express.
