RwandAir to start CAN in May 18

Fri Jan 19, 2018 5:01 pm

Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, the State Minister in charge of Transport, said that national carrier will launch its flights to Guangzhou in May.

“There are a lot of expectations for both the airline and the country,” he said while confirming remarks by the Chinese envoy to Rwanda Henry Rao that a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, allowing RwandAir to fly to China, was about to be completed.

The flight to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong Province, China will be tagged on the Mumbai, India route, he noted. He, however, said they were looking at possibilities of having direct flights in the long-run.

Hope it will be succesful considering the fierce competition in East Africa.
For now a 738 is sent to BOM.

It seems obvious as China has invested quite a lot into that part of Africa.

ET does operate ADD through here as well as KQ

KGL-BOM-CAN? This will never work, but surely the Rwandans don't care about making money.

Using the 737 or 330?
Africa to China’s quite a haul on a narrow body...

Indeed you are right, but nothing new here!
Kagame government wants first a global recognition of the country and eventually... the airline in the near or middle future!
Too bad to see your usual pessimistic point of view for each and every African initiatives ...

Do RwandAir plan to acquire/lease more A330 or WB (A350 as stated in a past annoucement)?
If yes, it's possible... who knows?
The thing is that most of Africa - Guanghzou market is dominated by trade and business travellers, at the opposite to the 737 capacity!

It is very likely that if the route is not profitable for the airline on its own, it may offer broader economic benefit for Rwanda as a country and in so doing cancel out any loss.

Airlines in developing nations are economic enablers. Not mature, established private enterprises merely focussing on shareholder payback. They have a farther reaching and more strategic purpose than that in many cases and why not..?

The flight will probably need to be on a WB. Cargo and trade is huge between China and Africa. A 737 (of all aircraft) will probably not be able to handle it. Maybe this tagged route will make a WB more sustainable.

Will likely deploy the A330 on it.

For those that are doubting or questioning why they would fly via BOM, the approach makes sense in that it's a new route that they have yet to build up. Ethiopian's foray into the far east used BOM and DEL as stopovers, eventually building up to the nonstops that they have today. Also, if you look at the airline's current schedule to BOM, the aircraft is on the ground from 1130AM until 0145AM, what better way to make use of aircraft?

Finally, I didn't know they operated the B738 to BOM nonstop. This must be one of the longest B738 flights in the world, with schedules showing 7 hours each way!

I think BOM-CAN is also doable with a 737?
Actually I think current CZ's BOM-CAN flight are all 737?

CZ doesn't serve BOM, but they do serve DEL with the 737 I believe.

DEL is served by both A333 and 737.
