Nordic Aviation Capital orders 15 ATR-600s for Silver Airways

Mon Jan 22, 2018 11:21 am

ATR and Nordic Aviation Capital signed a deal for 15 ATR -600 aircraft to be operated by Florida-based carrier Silver Airways.

ATR makes its comeback to the US

ATR -600 series in the US, to be operated by Silver Airways. The airline will introduce 20 ATR -600 aircraft into its fleet, of which 16 will be ATR 42-600s and four will be ATR 72-600s. This follows a deal between ATR and Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) for the purchase of 15 ATR -600s, of which 12 will be ATR 42-600s and three will be ATR 72-600s. These aircraft, along with five from an existing order between ATR and NAC, will be leased to Silver Airways, making them the first operator of ATR -600 series aircraft in the US.

Guess this is follow up the LOI signed in August for up to 50 ATRs by Silver.

Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

No. 15 from this order + 5 from preexisting NAC order = 20 (which was never an order, just an agreement).

This order (technically lease) alone is likely putting a lot of stress on Silver, 40 ATRs would be way too many for the airline to handle at this time.

The big question will be how well Silver can find pilots. I suppose a transition to new aircraft bodes well for long term stability and that may help with retention.

It will be interesting to see what new routes are made possible with the ATRs as well as which Saab routes no longer work with a longer aircraft. As I posted in an earlier thread, TPA-CHS/GSP, MCO-CHS/GSP/HSV/BKG, and JAX-ORF/MSY were teased in pr materials, but some of those (especially MCO-HSV, BKG) seem implausible. The 42 is already a major increase in gauge, but the 72s are almost double the Saab capacity, so I am surprised to see them as part of the initial 20 aircraft.

If the service is reliable, MCO/BKG could work 2 or 3 x weekly. If we are talking less than daily. I'll throw out some considerations. XNA/ LIT/MEM to VPS on a seasonal basis. If they could offer up connections to the Carribbean from those via a Florida or MSY connection, even better.

I could see a route between BKG and TYS with a pit stop in MEM work at 3x weekly, at least seasonally, Summer though the Christmas Season. Silvery Dollar City and Dollywood are becoming major winter lights theme park destinations as well as the best theme parks between the Smokies and Rockies.

would love for them to come and offer SRQ or PGD to FLL so B6 and others become better options for us
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list!

So, I take it from my math skills, Silver still needs to line up financing for 4 ATR 42s and 1 ATR 72?

NAC already has 5 on order, so this order is for the remaining 15.

Some have already been built and delivered to NAC (white tail).

Aviation Week reported in September that this was the way that Silver was going to acquire its ATRs. I don't know why it took so long for the deal to go forward.
