Buzz Aldrin explodes on Deltas' "Lousy Operation"

Mon Jan 22, 2018 6:47 pm

Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk on the moon, was caught on video yelling at Delta Air Lines agents after he reportedly missed his flight at Los Angeles International Airport last week.

“Are you operating an airline here or not? We’ve been sitting here now 20 minutes waiting for somebody to come and fix a two-minute problem… I don’t want the next flight! This is the most lousy operation I’ve ever seen,” he said after asking for the agents’ names.

Sounds more like some over-entitled brat didn't get what he wants, rather than any valid criticism of DL's operation.

Because I watched the video - it seems he was late checking into his flight. He made a scene and TMZ came over and interviewed him. He said after the ordeal that he likes DL and his nephew flies for them and the issue was resolved. But yeah.. talk about a bit of overreaction from a celebrity once again

Buzz is known for having a temper and being a bit... Prickly. That much is true. However, he's mellowed over the years and has more or less calmed down a lot compared to his earlier days. It is true that his fellow astronauts didn't care for him, but he was also the man most responsible for creating workable EVA techniques. He also literally wrote the book on orbital rendezvous techniques before becoming an astronaut, so he's owed a great debt. I wouldn't call him a notorious asshole. He may have been in his younger years, but he's not the same person nowadays. While I haven't met him, I do know a couple who have. They described him as a gentleman, very open and giving with his time. However, understand that he doesn't suffer foolishness lightly. He's one of those give him a straight answer and be logical and he's super with you.

I think he just had a really bad day and lost his temper at the Delta counter, is all. His outburst was no worse than we've all seen on Youtube or TV before. It's just that it was Buzz Aldrin, so it made the news. The bottom line: we've all seen worse.

Aldrin has more of the right stuff than many of the posers today. Sorry to see him lose his cool. Pretty obvious that not many of you were around in 1969:). 1st or 2nd on the moon was a BIG deal.

It does, although we don't of course have all the information. I very nearly pulled an Aldrin myself recently with AA staff at DFW when the discourse from them went something like this:

"Welcome to DFW after your 16 hour flight. It appears the computer has cancelled your onward connection. We don't know why. And we don't give a ......k".

But I didn't of course. What still perplexes me is the agent seemed genuinely surprised I wanted them to fix it. If Buzz experienced this same attitude of clueless detachment I have a tiny amount of sympathy for him.

I can relate. I remember when Mom pulled an Aldrin on the Continental folks at IAH back in 1986. The plane was late (their fault out of Gatwick), we were told that our connections would be held for us (a blatant lie), and when they weren't and no one seemed to care. You had an entire DC-10 full of passengers wandering around trying to fix their problems without any airline assistance.

"Hello, can you help me?" Red jacket shoulder shrugs, walks away...

Well, my Mom wouldn't put up with that! The decibel level went through the roof and the next thing you know, the gate agent upgraded us to first class just to make her go away.

We all behave badly sometimes. As I said earlier, the only reason this is news is that it involved a famous astronaut. If it wasn't Buzz Aldrin, no one would care.

Yes it's kind of nice an apparently still living legend from another age is having a down to earth quarrel about a missed flight with a nice Delta agent in some waiting line. In 15 years the son of the agent will brag on the playground how his mom kicked (the real) Buzz Aldrin of a flight & got millions of people all over the world watching.

He lost his cool for a minute or two and he was a-OK. The guy taping wanted him to say something bad about Delta, still, he didn't.

I have seen plenty of average Joe's embarrassingly including myself loose temper over stupid things whilst flying. I think it has little to do with being a celebrity, rather a poor personality trait in general.

Perhaps the media should interview the folks who were on-board the on-time DL departure, to see what they think of the "lousy operation".
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 178 airports, 89 airlines, 71 a/c types, 397 routes, 56 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,101,154 passenger miles.

Everyone can have a bad day.
I would be willing to bet that Buzz Aldrin has achieved way more in life than every keyboard warrior being a smart arse on here, including me. I have been there, done that, people do people things. But he’s a legend, and he’s someone’s grandpa, and he’s having a bad day and very cranky. I’m gonna cut him some slack til I have achieved a fraction of what he has.

Buzz probably was frustrated with an isolated inconvienience...Delta typically is a fine operation. Give him a break for voicing his frustration..he "Is" 86, he "Is" knowledgable about flight operations and Delta, His Son "works" for Delta and likely is happily employed and after all he "Is" an Astronaut and "He Did" walk on the MOON. If anybody gets a "pass" on other than orderly behavior it would be a very frustrated 86 year old Astronaut that has walke on the MOON.

What, because he was an astronaut and landed on the moon he can behave like an a**hole and blame people for his own fault? You are like the apologizers for Harvey Weinstein. Think again and think correctly.

No, but people do behave like arseholes sometimes, more so when they're old, perhaps, and others cope with it.

I cannot see any connection to Harvey Weinstein and what he did - and I really, really worry about "think correctly." I'll think whatever way I choose.

He was not even at the TSA stage. He would have been in for a surprise, unless he was getting preferential/honorary treatment along the way.

He should have checked in online and just dropped luggage off, many travelers find that more efficient. Can anyone tell if he was flying coach, based on the counter's characteristics?

This happens more often than not. Especially in storm or post mass cancellations, you won't even get to the counter if you arrived 4 hours before. Did the TMZ feed run live from the time he arrived to the time he complained? I wonder if we can further investigate.

He's late and still complaining? He only got air time [and sympathy from some] just because he landed on the moon. Thousands miss their flights under similar circumstances _every day_. Good on Delta for enforcing and not breaking the rules. With some airlines, the system itself won't print out boarding passes after the cutoff has passed.

Delta check in requirements are as follows: "The recommended arrival time at the airport is 2 hours prior to departure when traveling within the United States. You must be checked in at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Additionally, you are required to be at the gate and ready to board at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Customers who fail to complete the check-in time limits by these deadlines will not be able to travel on desired flights and change fees may apply."

Because someone is famous or powerful, apologists such as you tell us that we need to judge him or her with more leniency than the common run of humankind. In that respect Buzz Aldrin must be judged by the same standards that we would use to judge any crabby old a**hole, who is patently wrong in this case, without regard to whether he stepped onto Mars or a planet orbiting Sirius. Thinking correctly means judging all by the same standards - nothing scary or Orwellian about that.

As others have said, it is not uncommon to have this sort of thing happen.
Buzz recently turned 88, it's true he wasn't the favourite in the Astronaut Office back then, though he was often correct on technical issues than his detractors then would have cared to admit.
Please also note that a lot of this was resentment at his perceived lobbying, which in fact was largely done at that time by his Father, who was a high ranking USAF officer, his family had a history of depression, alcohol abuse and even suicide.

Buzz had some of this himself after Apollo 11, however he's been clean and sober for 40 years, still that is not either an immunity from having a bad day nor an excuse for bad behavior.

In 1999, a BA staff member and his family caused a delay on a LHR-LAX departure, due to them kicking off about being seated separately.
Aldrin was on that flight too and I heard of no bad behavior from him about the delay, which given who he is we would have I suspect.

(And prior to becoming an Astronaut, Buzz was flying F-86's and shot down at least one Mig-15 in the Korean war).

Buzz Aldrin is an American hero, he’s entitled to lose his cool once in a while

Most of you detractors weren’t around when he was risking his life for our country
or are clueless as to what he accomplished

He’s one of the people that have really made this country great

Show some respect ? just as he showed respect to the staff of DL

I've watched the video clip and he is just a loud mouth coming up with all the usual rubbish to cover up for his own mistake in not arriving in time.

If I had been the member of staff taking the abuse, at the point where he clearly declined the opportunity to be rebooked onto the next flight I would have called security to have him escorted off the premises.

In my opinion Buzz Aldrin is a hero. As you say correctly he literally wrote the book on rendevous techniques and showed other astronauts how to work on EVA.
His knowledge of orbital mechanics was astounding. He's nickname was Dr. Rendevous.

He earned bachelor of mechanical engineering and doctor in astronautics at MIT. He has countless honors and awards including Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I think the society should be more respectful to all remaining Apollo astronauts, their dedication and passion let us dream of a better world.

Nonetheless all astronauts are also human, everyone has had a bad day why should it be dffrent for Buzz Aldrin?
