Russia plans new "Concorde"

Based on the TU-160m2 BlackJack supersonic bomber. The fact it is based on a flying supersonic bomber makes it a little then vaporware.

They should make it electric so as to replace the SSJ on the SVO-OSL route in the near future.

Will not happen, even the Russian used the TU144 as little as possible & half full because it was not safe.
Plus I doubt they have solved the technical problems they had even then ( there is a remarkable russian doc in English on youtube, actually a series on all soviet aircrafts & one episode specifically on the TU144 where they tell of their problems ). Analysts also deem that the investments put into that programme & not elsewhere where needed caused 10 years of delay in soviet commercial aviation.
Last, the Russians are very business oriented these days, developping NBs & WBs that can sell enough.
So no, no russian supersonic jet in the next 50 years.
If ain't Boeing, it ain't going ;)

Lets just be realistic here. The only hint that "Russia" is planning anything, is that "Putin suggested (or asked) if it would be possible". There are no plans, and in fact, Tupolev has already come out and said that it isn't happening:

That's nice. Russia can't even get a reliable 100 seat regional jet in the market but they are going to make a bunch of concordes? OK!

Any connection to that strange rumor pandered here some weeks ago with the demand
to convert supersonic bombers to "business jets" for those that already have everything?

This is not as stupid of an idea add it seems on first glance. If you start with the assumption that there are non-market forces that drive a nation's desire to manufacture aircraft, you might as well shoot for a status symbol that will stand absolutely by itself.

They could absolutely do this from a technical point of view, if the market is a secondary consideration, why not?

I hate to interfere with your little fantasy here but it's worth noting that Concorde's order book numbered above 100 for some time, and as of first flight in March 1969 stood at 74 options from 16 airlines including PA, CO, AA, TW, QF, AI, JL, IR, EA, UA, LH, and AC. Most of these were cancelled between 1973 and 1975, before the type even entered commercial service.

I don't have any expectations that any firm, Russian or otherwise, will manufacture a commercially-viable supersonic commercial aircraft in the foreseeable future. But perhaps you could say a bit more about what I assume you are implying are problems with the SSJ? I recently flew LED-ROV on an SJ100 operated by Azimuth. It was a lovely little aircraft that was smoother and more comfortable than I had expected.

I also note that there are numerous orders listed for this plane, albeit from Wikipedia. Are you saying that there are operational issues, or that the plane isn't selling as well as you'd like? From the looks of it, they're certainly getting to market.

I know that, but I sure as hell hope they make the planes and we can at least enjoy the 'cheaper' ticket prices. But on the other hand, Boom is a new tech and trendy start up with no track record, IIRC 9 out of 10 start ups fail, although having 70 or so orders certainly helps, but I doubt many of them are firm orders.

The Russians cannot currently even build viable commercial aircraft in any quantities that can sell outside their country. How successful will this aircraft be, especially as it most likely will be a fuel guzzling noisy converted bomber. The only aircraft I know of that was originally built for possible military purposes that succeeded as a civilian aircraft was the Boeing 747 which was built as a competitor to the C5A which Lockheed built. The 747 was built so it could be used as a passenger or a freighter aircraft. It succeeded quit well but Boeing bet the store on it.
I can't see the need for a supersonic aircraft except as something to fly the flag. :old:

The Boom orders are as firm as any order at this stage of development of an aircraft. I expect that at least 2/3 of them will actually be filled IF Boom can deliver on an aircraft with essentially the characteristics they are advertising as their goal, within 5 years of their anticipated current delivery schedule. I believe that the Boom Aircraft actually is targeted to a real market niche... It is still up to Boom to deliver; although I'm very positive on that due to how they expect to be flying about a 1/3 scale prototype later this year (it is currently well under construction).

As for a new Russian SST.... nyet...

Have a great day,

The 707 was built to be a civilian transport, but Boeing decided the lowest risk method of financing it would be to sell it to the USAF as a tanker. That was a partially successful strategy, but Pan Am and other airlines were looking at DC-8's for some of their orders, because the DC-8 could carry 6 abreast in tourist class. Boeing threw in the towel and widened the 707 to be one inch wider than the DC-8. The cabin for the KC-135 for which tooling had already been built was for the originally marketed 5 abreast 707 proposal.

Awesome, a bomber whose first flight was in 1981 will surely make for a state of the art airframe design.

Yea and interjet needs to run like 3 frames per line because they can't get any parts. Sounds like a really great program.

Cus the first one was a resounding success. The Russians have made the some of the ugliest hulks in aviation history, and most of them were copies, and not very good copies. They should just give up at this point.
