United to add used 767-300ER to its fleet

Wed Jan 31, 2018 2:44 am

Bringing to its widebody fleet the practice of acquiring used planes, as it has been the case with its narrow body fleet, United will add 3 767-300ER that Hawaiian is retiring this year. Planes should arrive in the 2nd half of the year.

The 767-300 is no doubt still an good airplane, and many airlines have second hand or older models of them. Air Astana has some newer ones, while Icelandair will also get some as well (which will be used to fly to SFO I believe). So they still have a lot of life left in them.

But otherwise, what is the plan with the other 767-300's UA operates? Will they be replaced with the 787 or will they still be in service for several years to come?

I didn't notice it there. Glad that this was posted as its own topic.

This news isn't surprising considering that recent rumors had UA asking Boeing to restart the 767 commercial line. I wonder if UA's addition of 3 used 767-300s is an indication that Boeing might restart the 767 line (with an order from UA).

These three are likely the ones owned by and registered to Boeing directly.

Indeed, as the transaction is with Boeing Capital.

The commercial 767s are still produced alongside the military birds, albeit only commercial freighters have rolled off the line in the past couple of years.

The 3 aircraft are currently with Hawaiian. They were sold by Hawaiian to Boeing Capital and leased back for several months. These are bids that are relatively young and were built for Hawaiian.
