Ryanair launches flights to Amman

Sun Feb 04, 2018 1:22 pm

News article (in Dutch):

https://www.luchtvaartnieuws.nl/nieuws/ ... n-in-amman

Bad news for Royal Jordanian as Ryanair will be launching flights to Amman later this year. They'll launch flights to Amman from Budapest, Bucharest, Bologna, Brussels, Paphos, Prague, Krakow, Milan, Vilnius and Warsaw. Ryanair was already flying to Aqaba from several European airports, but this is their first serious expansion into the middle east region.

Interesting because I expected Wizz Air to get in first (and I would not be surprised to see them announce something shortly).

Ryanair’s Amman year-round schedule:
1 route to Paphos (Cyprus) from March (4 weekly)
10 routes from October: Bologna (2 weekly), Brussels Zaventem (2), Bucharest (2), Budapest (2), Krakow (2), Milan Bergamo (3), Paphos (2), Prague (2), Vilnius (2) & Warsaw Modlin (2)

Ryanair’s Aqaba Winter 2018 schedule:
4 routes: Athens (2 weekly), Cologne (2), Rome Ciampino (2) & Sofia (2)

I don't see bad news for RJ. All those new destinations are not served by RJ. Clearly the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism (which announced this) and RJ have something to do. Basically a way to boost Jordanian's tourism without touching RJ.

- Bologna: unserved. Northern Italy has no flights to Jordan
- Brussels: unserved. Belgium has no flights to Jordan
- Bucharest: underserved. Only served seasonally by TAROM
- Budapest: unserved. Hungary has no flights to Jordan
- Krakow: unserved. Poland has no flights to Jordan
- Milan Bergamo: unserved. Northern Italy has no flights to Jordan
- Paphos: unserved (LCA is served by RJ)
- Prague: unserved. Czech Republic has no flights to Jordan
- Vilnius: unserved. Lithuania has no flights to Jordan
- Warsaw Modlin: unserved. Poland has no flights to Jordan

There is not a single FR AMM destination that is served by Royal Jordanian (or anywhere nearby). The only exception is Cyprus with LCA/PFO but I would consider Cyprus a specific case due to the proximity of Jordan (1 hour flight).

I imagine some pretty generous subsidies are being offered (similar to Israel).

Turkish and FlyDubai are also starting flights to Aqaba, so it must be a bigger scheme.

In any case I am surprised at how badly connected AMM was to Europe. No flights to Milan, Poland, Belgium?... I am sure this will help tourism in Jordan as it has some unique places in the world, like Wadi Rum or Petra.

Also Vueling flew from BCN a few years ago.

Both easyJet and Vueling flew during or post-Arab Spring and in two markets (London and Barcelona) with RJ competition.

Good to see LCCs in this part of the world and especially a heavy-weight like Ryanair. Those intended routes should work for them as there is no direct competition with RJ

How long until FR give Dubai go. Wizz and Norwegian are already there, and I must say Ryanair and Emirates going up against each other is something I would quite like to see (even though they would be going after very different markets)

EasyJet couldn’t compete , their costs are too high and not really up to the fight

Ryanair is a game changer , great news for Jordan

Will they cross Israeli, Syrian or Egyptian/Saudi air space?

Probably Israeli. Relations between Jordan and Israel are reasonably decent and Royal Jordanian does fly to Tel Aviv.

I think it has nothing to do with the relations between israel and Jordan but how safe Israel regards Ryanair and its checking procedures. Note that some RJ flights - f.e. thise to BEY are NOT routed across Israel but take a long detour across Egypt.

Flights to Cyprus definitely cross Israeli airspace. My flight with RJ only took 45 minutes.

Correct, that has more to do with the poor relationship between Lebanon and Israel and RJ's reluctance to fly over Syria due to the civil war. ME just flies over Syria..

True, and both airlines routes to Amman didn’t work out. Easyjet hasn’t given any other attempts at the middle east yet while Vueling has since (2013/14) launched a year round successful 6 weekly a320/321 flights to Beirut.
