So I was looking at this photo C-FRYV, WestJet's latest Max8 parked at Renton, and the rudder has been been painted differently then the current fleet (the widget is significantly lower) and there is a different shade of green/teal on the lower portion. Any bets WS is doing an upgrade to the current livery? If so hope it looks good..

This is the second thread where reflections of a horizontal stabilizer cause speculation about a livery change or update. Aren't those reflections obvious when one sees such photos?

There will be a new livery, this is confirmed, but as far as I know, it will come with the 787s. With that being said, there is a big event on the 28th of this month that hints on an unveil of something.

I doubt it. Summer schedule was already announced and GS said, recently, the '87 routes would probably be announced in the summer with the winter sked. From what I've seen it will be livery...

They need a complete rebrand and should also ditch the "WestJet" name and make is sound more Canadian.

New livery is coming. It will be revealed Feb 28. I saw a blurred image of the new livery on a 737. Looks like there will be more teal back fuselage / tail like QANTAS. Sorry can’t share the image.

Hopefully the WestJet livery on the tail will get a much needed refresh - every time I see it I wince. Subjective I realize, and not that United (the airline I fly most) has a very inspiring livery as the merger resulted in just painting the UNITED name on the Continental livery. Half-assed. But those WestJet tails really bother me to the point that I would try to avoid using them. The weird jagged angle and all that teal is really pretty awful, again IMHO. Look forward to seeing what they come up with!!

They could remove the 'west jet.com' from the winglets too, I think we all know how to google WestJet. Most airlines have ditched slapping their URL's on their planes, it's not 2002.

True it's not 2002, but teal was also very popular in 2002 (and the latter half of the 90s when WestJet was founded).

Sounds good to me. WestJet's livery isn't exactly terrible, but I find it to be pretty boring. I always thought it was too bad that they didn't make more extensive use of their very unique color scheme, so it looks like I'll finally be getting my wish. It would be great if someone would leak a super sneaky spy photo of this blurred rendering of the livery alluded to in the article.

I have a feeling the identity / branding / livery was probably conceived and implemented quickly and cheaply based on a couple of used 737-200's crossing the rockies in 1996. Had they known they'd eventually evolve into basically the new Canadi>n, I have a feeling far more time and effort would have been spent on the branding. Perhaps now we'll see a livery which reflects what's become Canada's second flag carrier.

If you were to turn the tail on its side, you would also notice that the delta actually forms a "W"...and it works on both sides. THAT is a bit of brilliant marketing, regardless of colours...

Eh, that's a bit of a stretch. I don't see the W that well.

The current branding push is to use teal as the primary color utilizing shades, to emphasize part of the logo such as the delta, or the maple leaf. If I had to guess expect, the new scheme to incorporate shades of teal similar to design of the gift card as well as elements of the Maple Leaf. That seems to be what the current branding is moving to.

The color extends down off the tail and onto the rear fuselage from what I have been told.

Hopefully it will be better than their Clip Art Swoop branding

They really need to rename themselves.

Even something like CanadianJet, so that it keeps a certain element of "WestJet", would be good.

Sounds way too much like CanJet and Canadi>n. Both rather ill-fated enterprises. I thought of Trans Canada (works in both French and English if you drop "Airlines"), but I suspect AC still owns the rights to that name. But still not global enough.

And I think they can drop the "jet", unless they're planning to fly DC6s or something

Someone in marketing will think of something clever that works in both official languages.

Well, as everyone knows I’m usually not in favor of change for change sake, or (especially) more than a minor branding refresh of an aviation icon: but I’d make an exception here. I personally think the current livery is simply awful and hope that the new “identity” (which extends far beyond the livery) is inspired and well done.
I like Air Canada’s new livery a lot. As WestJet is now Canada’s #2 carrier, they must lose that dated ULLC look. Teal is fine, yes it’s very 80’s, but used correctly it could live onwards if the design is well done.
As for the name: yes, it does sound limiting (as just Western Canada) but Southwest and Northwest were able to overcome being geographically pigeon holed.

That is as ludicrous as suggesting Norweigan should change their name because they fly longhaul to other places in Europe beside Norway. WestJet has been WestJet for over 20 years, and is an established brand. Really why so much hate for WestJet as a name?

I think WestJet could use a brand refresh. The livery is perfectly fine. It does not necessarily look dated. It is just boring. The cabin interiors also could do with a touch up. It all looks decidedly 1990s.

I agree. I don't see them changing names. Its a well established brand and most of their traffic will orginate in Canada. They may change their logo to make it more clear that they're a Canadian airline.

They could probably stretch the meaning of West in "Westjet" to incorporate the western world rather than Western Canada

Ducks, Sharks, Caps, Whalers, Islanders all had some terrible form of that baby green/blue. 2003 came around and people started coming to their senses.

There is re-branding and then there is brand recognition. The latter is FAR more valuable for something that is essentially a commodity service. Changing the name to something completely different would be kindergarten class marketing foolishness. The livery matters to 1% - price and service 99%. Canadians always feel as though we need to teach/correct others about ourselves. In this case, we all understood what VC10er was communicating. Westjet's livery could use an update. However, not sure about changing their name. They have absolutely no name recognition outside of Canada, and if they plan on being a flag carrier, it might be a good idea. I will wait and see.

A Feb 28th unveiling makes sense as that is the airline’s de facto anniversary 3 out of every 4 years.

I welcome a new livery to replace that tired, boring one they have had for too long.
