CNS-NRT in 1989 on Japan Air Lines or Qantas?

Mon Feb 19, 2018 8:45 pm

Looking at an old schedule from 1989. There is a twice-weekly nonstop 747 flight between Cairns and Tokyo Narita.

It is listed as both a Japan Air Lines flight (JL 069) and a Qantas flight (QF 69).

Can anyone tell me which carrier would have actually operated that flight?

Thanks in advance.

This schedule is from 1988 and says that it is operated in co-operation with QF except the Tokyo-Osaka portion which leads me to believe that QF was the operating carrier on the Australia-Japan portion.

QF used to operate 747-200s CNS-NRT, however 1989 was not a good year for Australian aviation. I thnk there was also a JL776 on that route.

Looks like the CNS-NRT service started April, 1986 and continued until December, 2008.

Pretty sure the QF 69 routed BNE-CNS-NRT. At the same time QF operated the QF 59 which operated SYD-CNS-NGO, with the two flights operating through CNS at the same time allowing connections between the flights.

Correct. For several years Qantas operated CNS-NRT on mainline metal (originating in BNE) alongside Australian Airlines and then Jetstar. IIRC AO launched CNS-NRT in 2002, so they maintained the dual-brand strategy for 6 years.
