On a second thought, AMLO actually wants to fire all companies involved in planning to give those contracts to his crony Rioboo, who has absolutely no experience designing airports (his only airport experience is building half of the parking building next to the international departures area of MEX's T1).

This is Rioboo's master plan for Santa Lucia AFB:
Image

I'm not involved in airport planning or construction, but even I notice that although he has a lot of rapid exit taxiways he also has an awful bottleneck leading to the terminal [3], not even one taxiway going from the terminal to the center runway [5] and absolutely no space for building a modern approach lighting system (the area north of Santa Lucia AFB has already been urbanized and south of it there's a rail line).

Rioboo says his plan is shovel ready and will be built in 2 years

While the facility itself is starting to look great, its finances are starting to look pretty bad...

Excerpted from the ENR Article:

Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Monday that his incoming administration would not provide an estimated $4.66 billion needed to complete construction of a new airport serving this capital.

However, he held out the possibility that a group of business leaders led by multi-billionaire Carlos Slim could cover the cost of finishing the project.

In a meeting of the Mexico City Airport Trust a few days ago, the team building the airport now is asking for 88 billion pesos ( $4.66 billion ) from the public budget, said Lopez Obrador , who will take office on Dec. 1 .

"That's not possible; we wouldn't be able to finance that," said AMLO, who added that the report indicated the project was only 20 percent complete.

He said, however, that he has learned that Slim and other business leaders involved in the construction of the Texcoco airport are proposing that the project could be completed at a lower cost if building materials are acquired in Mexico .

"More importantly (the business leaders are proposing) they could cover the investment cost without any budget funds being used," said AMLO, who has softened his stance on the new airport after saying during the presidential race that the project was marred by corruption and threatening to cancel it.

"In that case, yes, we could consider the possibility of continuing construction in Texcoco."

This sounds like absolutely dreadful news:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mexi ... SKCN1N30EE

What in the world has this president-elect done in Mexico? What will happen to the new airport project in Mexico City.

If this is any indication of this president's 'modus-operandi' I see a VERY DIM future for the nation!

Are we saying the Mexican people are stupid and idiotic? This was a central issue in the presidential election. On election day, everyone knew that the airport was over if he got elected. Then he was by the largest margin.

Mexicans, getting hustled by corruption decade after decade and by each new face, don't have time to sit on airline blogs and debate the technical specs and the financial intricacies. Before and after their 12-hour shifts, they obviously saw something significantly more fishy with the entrenched business and political class that was/is siphoning all of the recent economic success to their top strata. They hope the next guy will fix some of the corruption, but they're not impractical.

This is an elected official following up on the mandate given to him by over half of his country.

Give me all of the bad design/engineering/financial data you want, but keep your comments about an incessantly screwed-over, yet hard-working group of people trying to find the best way through to yourself.

This wasn't a central issue on the Mexican election, AMLO just made it an issue so he could award his crony Rioboo with contracts for a different airport.

AMLO has no mandate to cancel the airport and his fake referendum shows just that as less than 1.2% of voters participated when Mexican laws require 40%. Besides that, all polls showed the population was in favor of continuing with the airport so he had to design his fake referendum to suppress votes in favor of the airport.

Mexicans will continue to be hustled by corruption under AMLO as this ****show just cost us at least $6 billion dollars.

Except the "new" guy belongs to the old mafia and is just as corrupt or more than the previous presidents, political parties. The problem with the Mexican people is that they believe politicians will change and will work "for the people" when at the end they are just looking out for their interests.

The poll to decide on the new airport was a complete circus. The issue here was not to approve the best airport for the country, but to ensure that whatever the previous parties were doing wouldn't be completed. Not because it's bad, but because it wouldn't be the project of the new president......

This is most likely going to delay any expansion. Isn't MEX pretty much capped out when it comes to slots?

Well I'm not suggesting they're stupid for anything but this decision, but they kinda messed up here. I mean what good will come out of this? Let alone the fact that they've left an airport over capacity which restricts growth, and there's now a 13 billion dollar airport corpse lying around outside of Mexico City. Sorry, but deciding half way through that it's not worth it is dumb.

Yes, as mentioned earlier, it is a circus. The poll was not even a referendum or a plebiscite. It was not organized by the constitutionally appointed elections authority. The number of participants is laughable as a representative sample of the population. The whole process was botched, with no way of preventing people from voting more than once or preventing fake votes being fed to the boxes. Moreover, why should the population decide on a matter that involves a lot of technical and financial knowledge?; that is why we have a government. And first and foremost, this asshole is not even President. He will be on December 1st, but for the time being he has no authority of any kind.
