DL Adds Mainline to HPN

Thu Mar 01, 2018 7:48 pm

Per Delta.com, DL will have one mainline flight at HPN effective April 2. Info is as follows:

DL1108 LV: ATL 8:40 PM AR: HPN 10:55 PM (Eff. April 2, 2018)
DL1060 LV: HPN 7:00 AM AR: 9:31 AM (Eff. April 3, 2018)

Aircraft is a Boeing 717, and I think this is the first ever arrival of DL Mainline in HPN. If you ask me I think this was only a matter of time.

Hey, if they think they can add this without sacrificing traffic at LGA & JFK, all the more power to them. Seeing all this new mainline service to priimarily GA only airports is pretty cool to me!

Finally, had enough of CR2’s. Fly to HPN probably 3-4 times a year.

It was only a matter of time IMO. I live on Long Island, but I'm tempted to fly out of HPN just to catch this. Always nice to be on the big boy surrounded by the little babies lol.

Funny as that aircraft is returning to its roots as AirTran used to operate the 717 into HPN. Customers loved having a business class back when FL was the only operator at HPN with such a travel option. :)

Very good point! With the capacity restrictions at HPN the 717 is the perfect way to bring mainline there with all the perks that aren't available on Delta Connection. I have no doubt the market can support it either.

It’s not that simple.

HPN is unslotted.

It has a pax per hour limit though.

That often means cosolidating flights when adding bigger equipment.

Even before AirTran however, NWA flew DC9s and NWA Airlink/Mesaba operated the RJ-85 both with F cabins. It always amazed me, considering the wealth in the area, airlines eventually moved to single cabin aircraft in the market. This will be a welcome addition to the options, I'd imagine.

I live in white plains, so this is my local airport, but usually catch flights out of LGA or JFK or even EWR to catch mainline jets nonstop, but a 717 will certainly give me a much bigger reason to fly out of HPN!!
Why is flying so expensive? And why is flying well so much more?

I can only dream of DL adding service into MMU (Morristown Airport) in NJ there are so many folks I know from NJ that would love to hop on in Morristown vs EWR/JFK/LGA. These corporate folks would pay a significant premium to fly out of MMU.

Today's schedule with all DL Connection from HPN-ATL: 6 flights
April 3's schedule with 1x Mainline and the rest DL Connection: 6 flights

No frequencies cut.

I use to fly DC 9s for NW. from DTW to HPN and we were always packed in and out of there. I was told that HPN was a very high yield station, I don't believe we hurt traffic out of our other NY stations at all.
Did not like the Departure noise abatement procedure at all though...

Yeah, they've been CR7s at a minimum for quite a long time. I remember they even had E170s for a while. Actually United had them from ORD for a while too if I'm not mistaken.

Yep, DL's HPN-ATL service has had a premium cabin on every flight for years (CR7/CR9).
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Agreed, there's still some advantages in Mainline First class as opposed to Delta Connection First Class. Though Delta Connection gives you the 1-2 layout.

glad to hear this. I remember flying United 737's ORD-HPN-ORD years ago, and Republic/Northwest DC9's from DTW. The first time I ever flew there I was on an Air Florida 737back in the late 1980's. So the airport can handle.the bigger planes, if they can control the volume of passengers per hour.

Back in December I flew the 717 into HPN just before Christmas. Full flight, and it was nice to have mainline. Delta only uses CRJ-200's to DTW although they added in CRJ-900's to this route now as well. Delta has added capacity to HPN while ORD on UA is now Air Wisconsin CRJ-200's. AA operates CRJ-700's to ORD.

I took several flights on New York Airways from MMU to JFK to connect to international flights more than 40 years ago.
Some of these were milk runs, stopping at EWR and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport with breathtaking view of New York City skyline.

It may be time for another helicopter operator to give it a try with services among HPN, TEB, MMU, EWR, LGA and JFK, and Downtown/Midtown heliports.

I'm curious about the flight times and crew rest. As of now only 8:05 of rest in total. I don't see how this is legal especially for flight deck, Otherwise it's a 24hr plus layover if they stay 2 nights, again not economical .'

Thoughts?

I believe is NYC is a 717 pilot base for DL. They could be staffing it as the start of a rotation out of that base, or a non-NYC based crew arriving at another NYC airport could pick it up.

Well, either it's legal and within the contract, or they stage the crews or rotate them into/out of a different airport, or they staff out of the NY base and the crews go home. I'm pretty sure you're not discovering some major violation by DL.

I used to take this flight on Airtran.

One thing is that HPN isn't a fun airport for mainline crews to operate into. The runway is on an incline/decline, making it a little tricky. And the noise abatement stuff isn't fun either.

The big deal (sort of) is that DL is adding mainline. They tried it out for 3 weeks in December, but before that DL never flew mainline into HPN. They've come as close as they possibly could with RJs as large as the E170, but never quite crossed the threshold.

This happens more than people realize. It is usually economical from the stand point of the rest of the trip the crew is doing. With a double layover the other days of the trip are usually very efficient, high time duty periods.

HPN isn’t covered by the NYC domicile so there will be no crews beginning or ending their trips in HPN unless the company built ground deadhead transpotation legs.

Delta FAs don’t just have different FARs, they also have no union contract so the company can freely schedule them within the confines of the existing fed regs. Most don’t complain, though, because they can build incredibly efficient schedules for more time off or to work days and get the money.

I honestly don't know, but there is a rather wealthy population in Westchester that could command a premium fare.

Exactly right which is why the C Series could really shine at a station like HPN if Delta wants to make full use of its capabilities.

And they probably will one day once they start basing some in ATL. HPN also has a short runway so the CS100 would be a good fit for HPN-ATL.

I doubt if that is even possible. No scheduled airline service is allowed from this airport due to some agreement between the residents of Morris County and NJ State. A few years ago an airline (don't remember the name) started a charter service to Chicago but was canceled soon. Due to the sensitive ecosystem around the airport and high-value residential properties, I doubt if it will be ever expanded beyond its current size.

Although delay prone and high prices, EWR is still a preferred choice for most North NJ residents to connect US and rest of the world.

Hpn definitely has a premium over lga from what I have seen. Not sure they can use c series due to the pax limitations.

What exactly are those limitations?

I don’t know if actual stats would back that up. I’ve hunted for, and found, better fares on certain routes/days out of White Plains and Stewart, than I’ve found from LGA or EWR. I’ve noticed that as you get closer to the date, the fares are high because of limited service. But if you begin your search way in advance, there are some incredible fares.

B6 flies a 150 seat 320 to FLL with that “short” 6500’ runway. Delta surely could fly a 320 to Atlanta. The CSeries isn’t what suddenly is going to make HPN work for Delta. If Delta were serious about putting a mainline product into the market before now they had plenty of fleet options to do so.

I'm curious about the flight times and crew rest. As of now only 8:05 of rest in total. I don't see how this is legal especially for flight deck, Otherwise it's a 24hr plus layover if they stay 2 nights, again not economical .'

Thoughts?

This happens more than people realize. It is usually economical from the stand point of the rest of the trip the crew is doing. With a double layover the other days of the trip are usually very efficient, high time duty periods.

HPN isn’t covered by the NYC domicile so there will be no crews beginning or ending their trips in HPN unless the company built ground deadhead transpotation legs.

No but an ATL based crew (for example) could arrive at LGA mid afternoon, limo over to the hotel in Purchase, and fly the next day’s leg out of HPN.

Why dont we just helicopter them? This is not how you upgauge one flight to mainline. Any kind of deadheading incurs duty time. Pilots are already running on thin margins for yearly hours.

I believe the poster with a high time duty day followed by 24 hours rest is the most plausible explanation.

This will be done as what some in the business call a "high speed", "standup" or "overnight turn". The crews will only work these 2 flights in their 2 day assignment. ATL-HPN is leg one, shortened rest, then HPN-ATL is leg 2 and the crew are now pumpkins. Back to home they go.

A 1 hour limo on the front end of a trip isn’t at all that restrictive. Duty hours aren’t a yearly cumulative limit and the “weekly” and “monthly” duty limits are nearly impossible to hit. Flight hours are a different story.

With that schedule they’d exceed far 117 duty day limitations doing a standup. Heck, I don’t know if the DAL contract even allows stand ups. Luckily my company does not, those things are worse then red eyes, and that’s saying a lot.
