FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

So AA is cutting back on some of the transcon in favor of shorter flights (except for LAS) that can be flown from LGA? Interestingly, CLE-LGA was also reduced. I wonder if AA is adjusting its NYC strategy, with perhaps more changes ahead.

This was speculated last week and now confirmed. DEN is a Top 10 domestic destination...if AS couldn't make this work, then it makes me question their overall plan for SFO. Perhaps moving more capacity to SJC at some point?

Apparent results of acute pilot availability issues.

What their schedule recently had for BE40 flying:
3 lines of PIT flying (2x ALB/MKE, BDL/SDF, IND/PVD)
1 line of MKE flying (2x CMH/OMA)
4th line of PIT flying returning March 7 (2x CVG/RIC)

In the past several weeks they posted pretty awful completion results trying to run four total lines of flying, especially routes out of PIT.

What the new schedule has for BE40 fling
2 lines of PIT flying (2x BDL, IND, SDF, 1x ALB, MKE)
1 line of MKE flying (2x CMH/OMA)

The E135 flying BUF-ALB has been running without issue and the PIT-MCI E135 coming later in March has not been delayed either.

No word on the start of the PIT-MEM-MCI route originally announced for late March, but when OneJet announces a date for something months out they often miss it. I do wonder if Countour (the airline operating flights for OneJet) winning the CEC-OAK route with E135 may put a crimp in plans to use an E135 for OneJet on PIT-MEM-MCI. But that's just my own speculation.

DEN-SFO is a rough route for AS to make it work. It is hub to hub for UA.

MIA-LPB on AA must be now making a stop at VVI both directions . It used to be just the northbound due to elevation out of LPB. J1 might as well just call it a day. Must be GROSSLY mismanaged. DTW-TVC on DL appears to be a reversal correction from last weeks load.

Big cuts at DTW for AA this week not a good sign.
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

Still a net loss of 2 daily flights if I did my quick math right. I wonder what happened to the slots AA used to the Caribbean destinations and TPA and the other cuts the JFK hub suffered.

Showing 1x daily E175 and 1x daily E145 on AA's website. Definitely a far cry from the 4x daily E175s from a while ago.

WN, B6, and now NK all fly to South Florida via FLL while NK also does LBE-FLL. Wonder how that's affecting yields.

PDX-CLT was 2x last summer, maybe more summers, can't remember. They had an 11am flight and a redeye.

Yep I flew it back in 2009 I wanna say. I was pretty full for the middle of July. It was an MD-90, so a little bit of a capacity cut as it's an A319 now. Almost identical schedule. Evening flight SLC-CLE, morning flight CLE-SLC.

Still a net loss of 2 daily flights if I did my quick math right. I wonder what happened to the slots AA used to the Caribbean destinations and TPA and the other cuts the JFK hub suffered.

The schedule might not have been in count before. It's possible they were overselling before with the expectation of removing these flights. Have to remember that the forsake schedules are not necessarily operationally compliant.

This service actually starts on 4/11/2018. I will be trying it at the end of the month, barring any complications.

Yes, AA is dropping LPB altogether. No longer in the website effective July 4. Possibly due to 757 retirements?

AA also upgrading one LAX-PHL roundtrip to an A330 effective Mar 25. YES!!! Haven't rode a widebody on that route since the TWA L-1011 in the 1970's.

Don't get this one. LF% in the mid 80s to 90 for March-November last year. Not that LF is everything but I would imagine with those numbers it is doing pretty well. They also are bringing it back over a month earlier than the PDX-MCI route but then not cutting that one. Just weird timing to bring it back for 2 months then cut it right before summer, oh well. Maybe they want to use that plane on two shorter routes though. WN will be happy to be by themselves again.

Interesting. I wonder if they will team up with BOA or Amazonas to provide thru pricing connections "on up the hill?" to LPB from VVI

AA appears to be doing well in the new markets from DFW to the NW. Considering they didn’t fly at all from DFW to BOI, GEG and BZN three years ago, now all three will be twice daily mainline even in the slower fall period. JAC is also getting attention with fall service twice daily. BIL and MSO are also recent adds in the region with once daily with an E175.

So AA is cutting back on some of the transcon in favor of shorter flights (except for LAS) that can be flown from LGA? Interestingly, CLE-LGA was also reduced. I wonder if AA is adjusting its NYC strategy, with perhaps more changes ahead.

Which LGA cut are you referring to? It looks like June actually gets an additional frequency this week.

There was a brief period when AA flew MIA-LPB twice daily some days; not it is withdrawing completely. Santa Cruz has become the center of business, but La Paz is still (in spite of "officially" moving to Sucre) the center of Government. This a huge loss locally.

More likely they will route passengers via Lima, where OW partner LA flies to LPA (and VVI)... although connection times are not ideal.

I read a recent trip report where someone flew AA SFO-PHL on the 332. When did that start, and is this swapping the aircraft from SFO to LAX?

AA's EYW cuts are pretty painful especially DCA-EYW. I hope this isn't a permanent realignment because the region has been bouncing back after the storm. Looks like I am moving over to Delta in the meantime.

I wouldnt call it slot squatting.

Cutting 6x JFK PHL and spreading the slots around is a smart use of slots.

It is obvious AA no longer wants to use slots to fly intl from JFK beyond what it has.

They have to use them in some way...or they lose them. Im sure AS or WN are interested

Thanks Enilria!

Seems AA wants to expand in Portland. The CLT has been a tad under 2 in summers past but the 2 extra ORD flights are new right?

Sad to see AA cut Bolivia (and subject it to the 7M8) but I suppose LA/LP Lima connections will Be available for those who need them. I wonder how much market share will be lost to Copa/Avianca over Panamá and Bogotá.

with all the scheduling issues for QX due to pilot shortage, do they REALLY need to maintain such frequency PDX-SEA at the expense of so much of their network cuts and substitutions elsewhere?

Mostly because they are a bunch of idiots. They could not make a route work where they had a monopoly. Heard they could not get good yields anywhere (go figure)

The big boys asked MEM to delay the closure of B/consolidation to A and C till after Spring Break season. That may have something to do with it. Noticed AA upping DFW, PHX, ORD and PHL while cutting a frequency to CLT from MEM. Wonder what the advance sales of F9's MEM/PHL flights are like. MEM O&D continues to climb posting a 6% gain in Jan 2018 over Jan 2017.

really seems like AA is just throwing darts on a board out of JFK and hope something would work. If they are going cut JFK-PHL down from 6 to 1, I don't understand why they are still keeping it at all?

JFK-SAN/SEA is just readjustment to what they've run last summer. Not a surprise. I'm sure we will see rest of summer cut back to 2 a daily for those 2. Bigger question is if the lie flats are coming. If not, the yields will be really bad this summer.
JFK-LAS is a surprise. I personally think this route is in a lot of trouble. It's becoming another LAX-MCO in yield. I wouldn't be surprised if this gets cut in the next year.

This was speculated last week and now confirmed. DEN is a Top 10 domestic destination...if AS couldn't make this work, then it makes me question their overall plan for SFO. Perhaps moving more capacity to SJC at some point?

If that actually happens, then they basically wasted $2.6 billion.

This one got me a bit interested in CHA. They seem to have a very odd schedule with DL....almost hourly CR2 flights for ~3 hours each morning and afternoon, with MD88s filling in the gaps. I'm assuming the short distance (and thus flights) is a way to not run off DL FF's while keeping the CR2s moving. Based on the total capacity, it doesn't seem that CHA would need any CR2s.

I read a recent trip report where someone flew AA SFO-PHL on the 332. When did that start, and is this swapping the aircraft from SFO to LAX?

The SFO-LAX A330 will stay as well. Looks like that started back last October. TWA did both of these transcons with L-1011's in the 70's, nice to see AA bringing back the widebodies although they probably have no idea that TWA did it over 40 years ago.

Oops, meant to say the SFO-PHL AA A330 will stay as well. This is in response to Phatfarmlines question, #25.

So AA is cutting back on some of the transcon in favor of shorter flights (except for LAS) that can be flown from LGA? Interestingly, CLE-LGA was also reduced. I wonder if AA is adjusting its NYC strategy, with perhaps more changes ahead.

I think they are just re-hiding the PHL-JFK slots.

I agree. That doesn't bode well.

They are having crew problems. Tough decisions.

Interesting to see so many Alaska bush carrier activity in one report lol. A lot of action in the Yukon delra areas.

Are these carriers working in tandem? One adds and another drops a route simultaneously?

AA's EYW cuts are pretty painful especially DCA-EYW. I hope this isn't a permanent realignment because the region has been bouncing back after the storm. Looks like I am moving over to Delta in the meantime.

Some of it is core schedule update noise, but it is less than I thought they would be doing at EYW.

They had just upped it to 6 in a schedule load a few months ago.

Agreed. I see a transaction down the road where they bail out. Trouble is that B6 won't do the deal to trade their LGA stuff for AA's JFK. Not sure who else there is to do a deal with? DL won't give up anything at LGA.
tphuang wrote:
If that actually happens, then they basically wasted $2.6 billion.

I never liked the deal. It made much more sense for B6 to buy VX. To me SFO is a much easier road than SFO, but they seem to be least aggressive about maintaining SFO.

DEN-SFO is a rough route for AS to make it work. It is hub to hub for UA.

If they can't make DEN-SFO work, then I think it is pretty evident that AS is quietly exiting the SFO market and will only focus on ANC, SEA, PDX, and LAX.

Insane capacity. There will be 25 daily flights from ORD-BOS on AA, UA, NK, and B6. That's not even including the 5 out of MDW on WN. Something will have to give.

Very interesting that this will last into NOV. Including CLT and DCA, they will have 12 daily frequencies. Seems like they are responding to NK.

Great add for CLE. With an 0830 departure it will offer many connections to west coast. On an A319 no less.

Good to see JFK-PHL reduced on AA in favor of some more useful short haul connections!

The naysayers keep telling me that SFO is being built up, and the SJC thing isn’t significant. Are we getting closer to even on the post-merger SJC versus SFO?

Repeating a point I brought up earlier, AS might want a hub at SFO, but they reportedly don’t have the gate space and won’t for some years to come. Not that SJC does currently or could support a major AS hub, but where will they fit one in at SFO??

Seems AA wants to expand in Portland. The CLT has been a tad under 2 in summers past but the 2 extra ORD flights are new right?

Sad to see AA cut Bolivia (and subject it to the 7M8) but I suppose LA/LP Lima connections will Be available for those who need them. I wonder how much market share will be lost to Copa/Avianca over Panamá and Bogotá.

The are not cutting Bolivia. Seems the flight is being moved from La Paz (LPB) to Santa Cruz (VVI)

Am I correct that LPB cannot carry a full compliment of pax and cargo to MIA, which is why the VVI stop?
I have been on this site 15 years. A unrecoverable email account led me to starting over. Those of you who call me a rookie, you may stop ok?

Yes, the 332 on PHL-SFO was extended again until at least late July. So PHL-LAX/SFO will both have a 332 rotation through much of the summer.

No surprise on JFK-PHL. I thought they might actually up the remaining flight to a 763 more for rotation purposes.
