US$5M stolen from a LH Cargo plane in Sao Paulo VCP

Tue Mar 06, 2018 4:25 pm

On Sunday, March 4, an armed group entered the cargo platform of Viracopos airport in Campinas to steal US$5 million from a Lufthansa Cargo plane..According to information from Brazil's Federal Police, a group of 5 people aboard a truck with fake stickers from the security company entered the cargo platform where the aircraft was parked.

The aircraft involved is an MD-11F, registration D-ALCF, flight# LH8263. The aircraft was on a stopover at the Campinas airport to pick up more cargo, with its final destination being the Frankfurt airport (FRA), Germany, after a stopover in Dakar, Senegal.

In an official statement, the airline confirmed the theft, but gave no further details, as there is an investigation in progress. Instead, the airport operator reported that the theft was perpetrated by an armed group aboard a Toyota Hilux with stickers similar to those used by the airport security company, entering the platform through a 6-meter hole they made in the perimeter fence. It was also mentioned that the theft did not last more than 6 minutes and no shots were fired.

So my question is, why is a cargo plane carry $5 million in cash to begin with? With all the ways to transfer money, this seems crazy. LH was victim to this in 1978 at JFK when Henry Hill and his men stole $5 million in cash and $1 million worth of jewelry.

Hard currency has to be transferred somehow and this is how its done. Even though you might do a quick money transfer online or a wire with your bank eventually that hard currency has to be moved.

It's quite an usual business and most of the times it's also onboard (or actually in the belly) of passenger flights. So, it could be that you are actually sitting on millions of dollars, euros, gold bars, jewellery, etc.

Yep. Fairly routine to have cash or other valuables shipped commercial.

I have had the 'fun' task of helping unload more than 10,000 lbs of precious metals off a commercial flight on more than one occasion. What a chore. Those boxes ain't light.

Such thefts almost always have insiders to let them know when such cargo is coming in as well as for info as to the layout, weak security points and how to get in and out of them. LH apparently had one of those moles at that station so they have a serious security issue to deal with.
