Qatar announces Gatwick twice daily from 23 May 2018

Wed Mar 07, 2018 11:47 am

Just announced at ITB Berlin: QR returns to Gatwick.

Qatar Airways has announced a raft of new route launches, including a return to London Gatwick.

The carrier withdrew from Gatwick in 2011. At the time, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker blamed commercial reasons.

Al Baker said “Gatwick to us became less attractive due to the fact that all the American feed we used to get there evaporated with the Open Skies [agreement] between the US and Europe which meant that all the American carriers moved to Heathrow.” Al Baker said that without the feeder traffic “the domestic traffic wasn’t enough, and what there was, could easily be carried over Heathrow”.

BA has a fleet shortage made more acute by the 787 RR engine issues. So temporarily dropping DOH which is served multiple daily by OW partner (and shareholder) QR makes perfect cooperative sense. Nothing else going on here.

The extra flights from LGW on the Friday and Saturday making it 3 x daily on those particular days will be A332 where as the remaining schedule is B788.

I find up to 3 daily very ambitious...how often does a 7 hour route get launched with a schedule like that?

The existing LHR-DOH flights are timed to arrive, broadly speaking, in three blocks. 4-6pm, around midnight and around 6am. The new LGW times are aligned with that instead of being used to full in the time gaps between the LHR flights.
Is that because there is very little onward connectivity from DOH outside these banks? What are the patterns to these banks in terms of which traffic flows they connect?

Yep. There aren’t exactly a ton of O/D passengers DOH-LHR. Connections are how it makes its $/£. I imagine LGW will have an even less O/D share with business preferring LHR.
