Really interesting to see them fly DOH LUX. There must be very little O&D traffic there.
The other routes (Turkey and SE Asia) can rely on more O&D.
Will any of these routes be seasonal?

Disappointed OPO neglected yet again. I guess with EK ramping LIS double daily QR want to bring on some competition. Hopefully OPO is on the list perfect B788 route.

I wonder if QR will overtake TK as the airline with the most destinations at some point in the future. They are growing faster than EK and definitely faster than TK. I think it's only a matter of time now.

by being the smallest alliance they can occupy more markets and create more new connections for OW passengers
the marginal gain QR provides to OW and vice versa is greater than the marginal gain TK provides star and vice versa

Malta is very interesting. We'll have to see if Emirates reacts. For well over a decade they flew to Malta via Larnaca. I think they'll lose a lot of customers unless they introduce at least a few non-stop flights.

QR definitely has a better strategy than F9, but the biggest advantage of DOH and DXB is that the sheer volume and scale of the traffic going through a single hub is so massive that it almost forms a "superdart" that sticks wherever it is thrown. This is a big reason why EK and QR have been so successful. The theory with their business model is that no one route by itself can support the operation but the global reach is so insanely massive that QR/EK can pretty much go anywhere one could possibly need to go on the pure basis of having such a large volume of people going to so many different places that other factors such as seasonality, standalone viability, yield, LF, volume, demand that would normally matter almost become irrelevant because it will never be a problem beyond a certain threshold of superconnectivity which both QR and EK have surpassed. So it really doesn't matter how random a given destination is, because people in smaller cities are almost always going to bigger cities, so even if a random city in Turkey is added, chances are that at least one person on that flight is going to Sydney, Hong Kong, India, etc. But everyone on the flight is going to DOH, and regardless of what their next destination is, they can get there with just one stop in DOH and there will always be enough people going to the big cities to sustain that feeder flight to DOH.

Even if Qatar Airways did give a full list of new routes they were launching, we couldn’t really trust it, since the airline is notorious for announcing new destinations and then not following through on the service.

For example, last April Qatar Airways announced flights to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Cardiff, Malaga, Mykonos, Accra, Kiev, Lisbon, Prague, Chittagong, Mombasa and Abidjan.

How did the airline do?

* The San Francisco, Las Vegas, Accra, Mombasa, Abidjan, and Chittagong flights never happened (well, unless what they intended all along was a Qatar Airways-coded 8hr30min overnight bus ride to Dhaka — see below)
* The Cardiff, Lisbon, and Malaga flights are being “recycled” again this year as “never before announced” routes

I will add that the following routes have either started or a firm start date has been announced: Mykonos, Kiev, Prague

Why so? TLL had 3 x fra and 2.x much on lh. Even tk planned 2.x day but now has only one. Daily to doh won't be exaggerated IMHO. Qr will steal Eastward traffic that before was monopoly of Ay and sk. I see also further growth of Su to connect to Asia.

Qatar already serves BRU, CDG, FRA, and other destinations not too far away. I am relatively price-conscious in my booking decisions, but it would have to be an absolutely rock-bottom fare LUX - MNL via DOH to get me off flights from BRU! Like €200 less return, given the hassle and time to get from home (close to BRU) by train to LUX, or on the E411 with parking issues. Even as I write this, I am not sure that €200 would be enough to tempt me to try!

Also the threat to me that it will likely be a 787 with 9-abreast in the area I can afford to sit in means that it is not a great choice for me!

The LUX area is not a high-density population area, and not all that many big cities nearby in neighbouring France or Germany either!

Saudia is also resuming flights to Málaga this summer, and Kuwait Airways had announced flights... so maybe AGP is getting 3 ME carriers in one summer... not bad. Interestingly none of them with Dubai!

I am surprised with Air Italy, they haven't announced any beach route there... Catania, Palermo or Olbia, for instance. Maybe in the future other destinations like Dubrovnik or Ibiza could work for them.

They talk about opening Lisbon for som many time, that i dnt get too much expectation about that.
I'll wait for the schedule to be available and the booking opened, and then i will believe.
They even anounced that they would open Lisbon in the last 2 years and nothing happened...

I wonder what is QR's current longest time between first announcement and actual launch? For example HEL was announced in the fall of 2011, but took until October 2016 to start...

Istanbul (2), Ankara, Hatay, Adana, Antalya, Bodrum. Seven destinations in Turkey. Impressive.

As I live very close to LUX this is good news for me. LUX-DOH is 2500 nm, so I guess they will use their A320 or maybe the new 321neo when they arrive. I really can't see a 787-8 or anything bigger at LUX, the airport is not ready for aircraft of that size.

Turkish Airlines serves LUX already 5 times a week, I guess this will hurt them as I don't know if the market is large enough for both of them. They use mostly 737-800 but from time to time also a A321 or a 737-900 which shows I think that demand is there. Last year they even came once with an A330 (a video can be found on YouTube), but the market is really too small I guess for Qatar Airways to use an 787 even if this service turns out to be only twice or three times a week.

Qatar is also starting a direct DOH-SKG 4w in 3 weeks time..

Lisbon, Portugal, wow. I did not know that there would be a customer base there. Then again EK is flying there daily.

Yet we are still waiting for DOH-LAS to start.

That's cute, but there is already a OW presence at all of these cities (e.g. BA at LUX and CX at CEB), except DVO. OW doesn't need QR - no more is this evidenced than through the fact that there are still no OW members codesharing on many of QR's flights, like DOH - AKL. I suspect that many OW flyers would avoid a DOH transit like a plague, when they have HKG or LHR T5, greater frequencies, as well as more equidistant routings.

I presume that this has something to do with freight. CargoLux does do a lot of freight business out of LUX. My guess that they can connect LUX with all the odd destinations in Australia, India, etc.....and at the same time, get some freight over to markets that CargoLux doesn't fly to.

Lots of people that go between Greece and Australia.......no Australian carriers that go to Greece.........A3 has no wide-bodies............connections via Asia are next to nothing.....and not everyone neccessarily needs to go to ATH.....plus you have several choices of Australian airports. Perfect!
